Today I am glad to share two emerging signs of hope in the church. The Wesleyan Covenant Association (WCA) is the renewal group bringing the Global Methodist Church into existence. Today I talk with the WCA’s president, Keith Boyette. This conversation is a hopeful sign about the future of the church. Here are the links:

Thank you Pastor Boyette for your sharing on the developments of the Global Methodist Church and the process it has taken to emerge later this year in 2022. I also really appreciated your very astute comments and reactions Andy. I live in Hong Kong and am participating in the church life of the Methodist International Church here. Could Rev. Boyette address any efforts having been made to contact the Methodist Conference in Hong Kong as to the possibility of joining the Global Methodist Church in the future?

Some groups of conservative Mennonites used to, and may still use the lot to seek pastors. They put a piece of paper in a Bible, put several Bibles on the altar, and then have selected candidates come forward and chose a Bible. The one who gets the paper is selected.

This unfortunate current split in the UMC reminds me of a similar split in southern Methodists in the 1960s -1970s. When I was growing up in the 1960's South, many churches left because they opposed racial integration, believing the Bible called for continued segregation of blacks and whites. My wife and I were both sad and excited as we recently transferred from a church leaving the UMC. We have joined a UMC church that is staying the course until the next annual conference. We would have preferred to see our old church support, and the UMC approve, one of the other options than the Traditional Plan. We hate to see the church divided over this issue of acceptance of gay marriage/clergy. We have gay relatives, and it appears to us they were made by God and nature this way, and deserve full acceptance and support in the church. We suppose the broader issue is how literally we interpret the Bible. We have periodically modified our Biblical interpretations with greater understanding. Like creation, slavery, interracial marriage, divorce & remarriage, mental illness, etc. Perhaps our understanding of homosexuality has improved over the centuries.

Thank you so much for this very clear description of what's going on. Our church in Grandview Texas is being led by a progressive pastor and she is doing her best to mislead our Admin Council and congregation

Will the GMC be as liberal as the UMC on "political" issues like gun control, climate change, immigration, etc. I come from a long family line of Methodists and Republicans. But, I find both clergy and laity are increasingly hostile to the notion of theologically liberal and politically conservative.

My problem is that I support the ordination of gays and same-sex marriage. I don't think the Bible is inerrant. I also agree with the UMC position on abortion. On the other hand, I think the GMC has valid points on the top-heavy hierarchy of the UMC, the need for congregations to own their real property, and the need to change the appointment of pastors to an appointment/call hybrid. The congregation where I grew up suffered for decades, because the bishop and the cabinet keep appointing pastors who were all wrong for the congregation.

The formerly United States need to have a similar process. Recognize that we have become two separate nations, incompatible, and re-group into two separate countries.

@@polemeros Except Canadian conservatives don't consult the Bible, like a lot of American conservatives. When George W. Bush said that he thought Christ was the greatest political philosopher, I blew a gasket. I think Canadian conservatives understand that John Locke is the greatest political philosopher. They probably don't know that Thomas Jefferson plagiarized Locke, in writing the Declaration of Independence.

I have been a Methodist since 1958. I remember the 1968 merger with the EUB. I remember the changes in music during the 70's. Most members accepted these changes with grace and support. Always some who never have and never will. That is the nature of the human race, especially church people. However, this time, Lord, You have given us a mountain. It breaks my heart to see what is happening to my church, all in the name of Jesus. Did He not set the example for us to accept and love all God's children? Who are we to determine who is and who is not called 🤔 to serve as pastors and leaders of the church? The judgemental of others is a sin in God's eyes. We are called to love and accept each other regardless of who we are, where we live or who we love. God will judge whether others are wrong or have sinned. Not our job. Lord have mercy, Christ have mercy. Send healing to our church ⛪ in this serious matter, Amen and amen.

You would want people to support an organization that they believe espouses unbiblical teachings? Christians are called to be different from the world and many are now rushing to adopt popular culture that makes them indistinguishable from non-Christians.

@@MrErpman so you believe that Christians should not love and accept all people regardless of their race, gender or ethical beliefs? Didn't Christ set the example by association withe the "undesirables" of His time, even when His family thought He had lost His mind? How else do we tell every person about the Good News of the Gospel if they are rejected by the church? I don't understand 😕. 🤔🤲🙏

Also, this is not the way of John Wesley. He was very supportive of women in the ministry, of inclusiveness, of preaching the Gospel to all people, not just the rich and privileged. He would be appalled to see what is happening to the Methodist movement on which he spent his life's work . There is room for every one at the foot of the cross ✝️.

Fat shaming is a sin, obviously, and it is obviously part of a worse sin tier than the tier gluttony is on, so gluttony is canceled out as a sin. Did I get that right? The commenter Ona Ellis above seems to be saying that sin shaming is a worse sin than um, sin is. The odd thing about that is she is happy to confront people about their sin shaming but not willing to confront people about their sin. Did I get that right?
