My mom worked in advertising in the 80s, when I was a kid. She had this book that was published in a binder, it wasn't something you could pick up in stores, you had to be in the industry to get it. It was called "Mastering Mass Media Marketing" or something like that, and was basically this very frank, very "we all know advertising is con artistry, here's how to fleece the rubes and trick morons into buying absolute crap they don't need." Like really kind of sleazy, manipulative tactics and how to get away with bold faced lies. Years later, I'm in college taking film studies, and getting really into movie history, b-movies, trash cinema, etc. and I learn about this movie "Bloodfeast" directed by this guy "Hershal Gordon Lewis" and I'm like "The Mastering Mass Media Marketing guy?" Because guess who wrote that book? I still laugh about that. Lewis wasn't a film maker, he was a hustler who needed product to sell so he just made his own product.

Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind WAS marketed as horror movie, or at least a mystery movie. None of the material I recall seeing had anything more than the road and the different types of encounters. It was basically playing off of the HUGE reputation Steven Spielberg had from making Jaws. We went to see the film on pretty much that alone and it was wonderful. No IMDB back then to spoil everything.

"Fire in the Sky" was set in Arizona, based on a "true" story that took place in Heber Overgaard, Az. Though a scifi film, the main thing audiences took away from the film was its horrific alien experimentation scenes. Which were added to the screenplay by a second writer the producers brought in to punch up the story because they found Travis Walton's original account too dull. Great poster, though. 👽

A really clever rubric for showing us 50 movie posters! For me The Brain Eaters was the best discovery. Can’t imagine how you did the research for this- I suspect these films aren’t catalogued by location. Would love to see a similar exercise for posters from around the world, or perhaps individual episodes for the most productive horror nations- UK, Germany, Italy, Japan . . . Or posters by era . . . I guess what I’m saying is more posters please!

@@robertstuart480 that's kind of like how I stumbled on *The Thing* at my friend's house. His dad had HBO, and I tuned in right when Norris had his heart attack. My first thought was "Hey! It's Kurt Russell! Boy, this is the best looking Disney movie I've ever seen! Why is that guy having a heart attack?" (Sigh) after Palmer was blown up, my parents called to say it was dinner time. "They're given a blank sheet of paper and told to put something on there that sells the film, that sums it up, but without revealing too much." That's giving the industry far too much credit. FWIW, the designers are artists who take pride in their craft, but I'm pretty sure the only instruction they're ever given is "put asses in seats." Posters are marketing, and marketing only exists to sell as much product as possible.

Interesting fact about movie posters: legally the images on the posters *NEVER* go into the public domain. One of the *MANY* reasons why movie posters are premium works of art... even when the films they are depicting are not. Consequently, movie trailers legally fall into the public domain as soon as they are created (not that that fact stops some studios forbidding the use of them). IP laws! lol

Not mentioned here is how the THEMES of some of the posters--say the one for Close Encounter as ana example--were often echoed in the artwork of other forms of media. If you look at the Close Encounter poster you see the road stretching under someone's wheels, going by like so many summer fields. If you recognize those words then you know already where I am going because the cover of the Jackson Brown album (released at the same time as the film) Running On Empty echoes the film's leaving one to ponder (depending upon which you became aware of first) is this a sequel to that one in some way? Likewise, the popularity of the 1950s sci-fi film posters did not die as we saw with a few other posters here, but like Running on Empty in the 1970s the 1980s novel by Orson Scott Card--Wyrms--had an original cover art that depicted a nubile young girl splayed backward across a rock, while looming over her, a GIANT worm creature complete with lots of centipede-like legs, and IF you look closer you see that one of those is not exactly a leg. The colors the font everything about the cover harks back to the 1950s, and draws you in.

None of the Hereditary posters are really a good indication of what the film is about. However, the 3rd poster has the best chance of clueing you in on what the film is. I know that many people who are dedicated fans of Ari Aster will gush over their perceived accuracy of the film's posters, but the average person wouldn't guess the themes. In fact, if you put all 3 posters side by side you would get a somewhat accurate representation of the plot. Ari Aster is a good director, but he doesn't rise to the level of genius in my estimation. Perhaps it's because I find cult/satan/possession fims to be quite played out.

For Hereditary: none of them. None of those posters represent the film at all. I can't imagine what they were thinking. And the posters wouldn't make me want to go see it. Word of mouth got me to see it, streaming, even though horror isn't my genre. Very little of that genre scares or horrifies me. And this one was almost, almost the movie to break that. But they didn't effing know how to end it! I stopped caring by the time the movie ended. I am nearly alone in this opinion though, so totally check it out - if for absolutely no other reason than because Toni Collette is the most incredibly amazing never-won-an-oscar actor of the past 50 years.
