James Marape, Prime Minister of the Independent State of Papua New Guinea, addresses the general debate of the 77th Session of the General Assembly of the UN (New York, 20 - 26 September 2022).
The UN General Assembly (UNGA) is the main policy-making organ of the Organization. Comprising all Member States, it provides a unique forum for multilateral discussion of the full spectrum of international issues covered by the Charter of the United Nations. Each of the 193 Member States of the United Nations has an equal vote.
The United Nations is an international organization founded in 1945. Currently made up of 193 Member States, the UN and its work are guided by the purposes and principles contained in its founding Charter.
The UN has evolved over the years to keep pace with a rapidly changing world.
But one thing has stayed the same: it remains the one place on Earth where all the world’s nations can gather together, discuss common problems, and find shared solutions that benefit all of humanity.

Papua merdeka brothers and sisters, freedom of expression does not exist in this democratic country. Papuan brothers and sisters, let's abstain from holding simultaneous general elections and the 2024 presidential election as a form of rejection by the Indonesian government and as a form of a referendum. So that other countries know that we, the Papuans, have indirectly rejected Indonesia and want independence, don't be blinded by the position they have given us. Free Papua

No problems with the overall speech. That was a commendable debate. 26:25 The concluding remarks, though, about the British imperial regime and Britain's supposedly high moral values are shallow and inconclusive. Not all of Papua New Guinea share those sentiments. Under the British colonial thieving, exploitation and plundering rule, Papua New Guineans are mindful and very aware of the terror, destruction and murderous tactics that Britain employed in many parts of the world (in India, continental Afrika especially in Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Ghana and more, the greater Middle East, Eurasia, Latin America, North America and the beautiful Caribbean Islands). Our own Melanesian neighbour; Fiji was ravaged by deliberately imported measles which decimated a lot of communities. That is not lost on the memories of many global citizens of the world. It's still fresh. Some of them happened just recently in Libya, Syria and Afghanistan. So we refuse to believe in a sanitized version of the royalty and superficial views of Britiania, France, Spain, the United States and their allies. The sun must set on that murderous era. Like the old Britainia, France, Spain, Portugal, Germany and the United States under their colonial regimes inflicted untold terror and chaos across the globe. Some of which still continue to this day. Many fellow global citizens are victims of their evil regimes. Lest the world forget, Papua New Guinean citizens are fully aware of that. The 21st century's digital revolution is exposing a lot of their wickedness and bringing them to the fore for greater national consciousness and awakening. Beloved Papua New Guinea will become a Republic, taking sovereignty into her own hands before she realises her Golden Jubilee (50 years of political independence) on Tuesday, the 16th day of September 2025). We don't need any foreign so-called queens and kings in 21st century Papua New Guinea. For humanity's good, the world needs more than ever - honesty, brutal truth, mutual-respect and justice as the most sought after commodities for peaceful co-existence.
