This UAD Apollo Review makes one thing clear: the Apollo Solo is one, if not the best, audio interface available for solo musicians and singer songwriters. From build quality, to sound quality, to included plugins, it's hard to go wrong with Universal Audio's new Thunderbolt 3 interface.
But there are a few shortcomings. First, the interface seems woefully underpowered to do its job simulating plugins, and it doesn't give you the option to offload processing on to your computer. Second, the Apollo Solo doesn't sleep and wake the way I'd hope.
Still, as the review of the Apollo Solo, and the plugin demos make clear, this is a very nice piece of hardware.

This audio interface isn't made to record multiple tracks at once. That is why it's called Solo. The plugins are loaded into the console (so into the SharC DSP), and then you record the audio in your daw. 1 track at a time. Once recorded, there is no more load on the DSP, and from there you start mixing in your DAW. Then the CPU of your computer is used. This device is specifically designed to record a processed signal (with the plugins, for example the Neve channel strip, to get a good starting track, which you can further EQ, compress, add reverb, delay, ... with the plugins you have for your DAW. The plugins aren't designed to use as mixing tools after recording your tracks. They are there to shape the audio before it hits your DAW. This is not possible on other simple audio interfaces. If you want to record more tracks with plugins at the same time, you need an extensive device, which UAD also offers, but at professional prices (a lot more than this Solo).

@colaboytje
@colaboytje 3 жыл бұрын
@@SoundConstraints Yes, that is true, but you have no choice. The extra plugins don't cost 1 cent extra for Universal Audio. They have been on the market for years, and are nothing more than a copy of a program code that has existed for years. That investment has already been earned back years ago. So, it is an inflated price on the same product. I wouldn't have any problem with it, if you could still buy the Solo and Twin. But those are no longer avalaible and have been replaced with the Heritage series (some stores might still have one in stock, but the stores can't order them anymore). So, you have no choice. It is a scam. Compare it to this: Apple release the exact same phone next year, calls it 'the Heritage' and gives you a 'free' game from their store, but raises the price by 33%, and they don't offer a version without the 'free' game. Nobody would accept that and it would ruin Apple's phone line. But Universal Audio thinks it can get away with it because new customers who don't know the product line of UA (which is impossible with Apple as it is adverstised all over the world on every platform) will be duped into thinking they bought a new product. Many fans of UA have already condemned UA on fora and on UA's youtube channel and Facebook page, for this action, and have vowed to never buy a product of UA ever again. Sadly, those comments are swiftly removed by UA. UA is very customer unfriendly and is known for it (trust me, I had my fair share of BS with their customer service). Fans were not that concerned about it because the products they sell are in essence fantastic. But this Heritage stunt, has moved fans away from UA. Former fans, like I was, do their best to inform newcomers of the fact that it is a scam. So, if you want to buy one, search for stores where they still have the regular ones, and choose your own plugins with the money you saved.

Great vid and review, I have one of these and although it was a bit of a pain to get it set up correctly in Windows (had to reinstall the drivers due to a crackling and distortion problem at first), its a great bit of kit for the money. The output amplifiers on this are amazing, the headphone amp even alone is worth buying one of these if you are mixing on cans a lot. Even unbalanced to phono inputs on my Adam A7X monitors sounds so much cleaner and punchier than on my RME Adi 2! My only complaint is that many of the exciting plugins to use are significant upcharge - so be aware that in addition to the $500 hardware cost you may need to spend hundreds if not thousands more to get the plugins you want.

I have an Audient ID4, and I am looking to upgrade.I heard the Apollo Solo Max's out at 7 plugins for some reason? Is this true? Or is it just for UAD plugins, and I can use 12 Waves plugins if I wanted?
@StockMusicMusician
@StockMusicMusician 3 жыл бұрын
The UAD interfaces ONLY run UAD plugins. And UAD plugins ONLY run on UAD interfaces. So Waves plugins can continue to run on your computer, but won't run on the interface. And you can't get around the processing limits of the Solo by relying on your computer. Depending on the plugins you're choosing, the Solo could max out with as few as 2 plugins. 4-6 seems like the most frequent amount.

Thanks much for the nice video. I'm considering this unit and the ssl2+ for di guitar into amp sims(neural amp sim>reason 11). My question is, would I be able to throw an LA2A/1176/tape sim on my input into the amp sim? I'm trying to sort out what exactly can I use this on. Also my imac is late 2012(thunderbolt 2) so would I be able to run some kind of adapter to make this work? Or should I just try to get the USB version? Thank you.
@StockMusicMusician
@StockMusicMusician 3 жыл бұрын
I don't think you could go from this into your amp sim, but you can go from your amp sim into this and apply the tape/1176 before hitting the DAW or monitoring. The Apollo is NOT backwards compatible with Thunderbolt 2, even with an adapter. You may actually want to consider buying a used UAD Thunderbolt 2 interface from Reverb instead. That will probably get you the best results, and they usually come with a bundle of plugins the seller no longer wants.

Is it worth it just for the recording quality, the playback (for critical listening) and the hardware features. Also, how does it compare in the above mentioned areas to the Twin. @Dracomies
@Dracomies 3 жыл бұрын
@@Jordanchicity23 Sure thing. My current interface for on-the-go is a Zoom F6. I've used it for this entire year and it's been godsend. It's the size of a hamburger but it has 32 bit float recording. 32 bit float recording means you can yell as loud as you can and never clip. It can record a car blasting away and you'll never clip. You can also record a whisper, even one far away and amplify that and it'll come out crystal clean. No hiss. It also has 6 inputs. I also do use the Babyface Pro as well. Those 2 I feel are really great for portability. But the F6 has been my mainstay for on-the-go or if you are a solo videographer. I hear that the Mix Pre 3 version 2 is good too and it also has 32 bit float recording. You never ever ever ever have to touch a knob and always have perfect recordings.

So, been browsing net and I just understood I should ramp up the game. I am very productive and should... consider this PRO thing. Seems there is no reason not to. But I am confused with the concept... 1) I upload to Pond5 / AJ a title to be royalty free but then I get royalties...(?).. does this mean content used on air, so what is this royalty free then?. 2) can I change the status of already uploaded song with PRO 3) how about title with already sold status 4) games use does not count within the pro not being performed? 5) or should one not bother with it.
@StockMusicMusician
@StockMusicMusician 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Heikki! Pond 5 / AJ are not royalty free, so you can ignore the term. You are paid a royalty every time Pond 5 licenses your song. This is paid by the *buyer* to Pond 5, and then to you. That's the only royalty the buyer pays. If the song is publicly performed, and registered with a PRO, the *broadcaster* pays a royalty to your PRO, which forwards it to you. Once a song is registered with a PRO, I believe it remains registered, but I may be wrong. You can ask their support for advice. Pond 5 is only selling a a non-exclusive license to use your song, so it can be re licensed multiple times. Each time, you get a royalty payment through Pond 5. If each of those different productions were then broadcast, you'd also get a performance royalty for each broadcast through your PRO. I don't believe that basic game use counts as being performed. But there may be unique situations with streaming.

@@StockMusicMusician Ok, thanks I think I got it now. So, in a sense the buyer gets it royalty free, just paying the initial license for using it. And broadcaster pays the P.R.O. money for me. I could get the broadcast license and P.R.O. royalties on top of it? ;) I once sold a pricier license or two so I wonder if I would have some pennies if I was with a P.R.O. . I looked at the alternatives and BMI looked as an option with clear submissions, (and probably some bulk import tool too) but not sure yet if I can be part of it as EU citizen.

Thanks so much! The intonation of my Les Paul has always been a little whack. I really need to get it to a tech soon. But instead, I just bought a new Telecaster 😂

Cant you just “commit” to your sounds to save DSP?

You can! But part of the appeal of this is also the ability to live record things with low latency exactly as they would sound. So if you're a vocalist who wants to hear their voice with EQ, compression, reverb and autotune, this might not have enough power for you.

The BIG problem with Apollo Solo is indeed that it’s processing power is totally insufficient, eg you can’t have the ´55 Deluxe plugin + reverb + compressor : needs at least an Apollo Twin.

Agreed that more power should be included.

I think it is universally known that recording garbage on the best interface in the world is still garbage. It would be safe to say the cheapest interface would be adequate for 99% of the users because they fit the first statement.GIGO

Certainly a good performance on a good instrument will make a bigger difference than any interface.
