Great idea! It'll take a lot of work to perfect the system and achieve adoption on a large scale. I can see how it then will be useful in many scenarios.

Thanks! Yess, will be interesting to see what kind of feedback I get and what ideas will spring from that, at least now "the worm is let out of the jar" haha, so that it can find life and evolve into something beyond what I was able to initially create, if it wants to! :)

I like the idea to specifically describe skills that are often observed together within a certain skill range! Seems very easy for a person reading to get an idea of where they are, and for a person who hears it to picture how that person plays! However, I think there is quite a large gap between 'advanced' and 'elite', and also a pretty big one between 'intermediate' and 'advanced'. I think in the interest of self-evaluation, players want to see how they move between denominations over time. Of course, there is diminishing rates of improvement as you do anything, but the gap between 'advanced' and 'elite', for most people, would probably be years. On the contrary, it seems to me that 'development' is intended to describe someone who has never played and is perhaps trying out their first day. But the jump going from that to the description of 'beginner' would typically be between 5 days of playing with a lot of reps, or maybe a couple of weeks. Either way, it seems like a very rare and quickly-exited range of skill that I don't think is worth describing with 2 categories. I think it would make more sense to me if a category was inserted between 'intermediate' and 'advanced.' That seems to me like a very interesting place of skill where a lot of people lie. Below that, there are people playing volleyball, maybe even regularly, but above that, there are the people who have regular practice sessions where they get a huge volume of repetitions. The presence of explicit practice, I think, is a gigantic marker of difference for what people are doing - in terms of their attitude, goals, and level. It is the split between the top of "casual playing" and entering into whatever you might want to call what comes next. Maybe somewhat related, but I think it would be interesting to develop an ELO system for beach volleyball. Interesting for both random matchmaking, and also for the system itself. I noticed chess players just say their elo and whoever is asking immediately feels they understand, whereas if I'm talking to someone, I find 10 minutes of describing their play does less than peppering for 3-4 touches of a ball.

Hey! Thanks for the amazing feedback! Firstly just for the conversations sake I'd love to know if you are referring to the "original" or "Yes/No" chart, or both? My reply would vary slightly depending on this, but I'll try to reply here anyway, thinking that it refers to both! Regardless, good points here! I agree on a few points: The first level is as you point out just a few days and could be "slimmed" to save space for other categories, absolutely. The thing with "elite" is that is just that - elite, the top of the top. Just like in many other cases there would be a "bell curve" (look that up if you don't know what I mean) if you would distribute players over these levels, and it truly is only the rarest of individuals who reach this level, top world tour players basically. Problem is that the level should still be described in a chart that describes all levels, so I guess it becomes a bit "asymmetrical" compared to what level the majority of players play.. But you are right in that it takes people years to make it from "advanced" to "elite", if they can even pull it off which is very rare. Anyway, you are not the only person suggesting more sublevels in the "intermediate to advanced" gap, and that I guess makes complete sense when thinking about the bell curve, this is the level where the majority of players are. I could for sure look into slimming down the "development" and "elite" ends of the chart and add some stuff there in the middle.. And I like your suggestion of people having the deliberate practice mindset, that is a pretty clear divider actually! You don't happen to have more ideas for "divider criterias" that could fit around the upper intermediate/lower advanced area? If you do I'd love to hear them! :) Super awesome to hear that someone says it is both easy to place yourself, as well as imagine a player at a certain level based on the descriptions.. That is 100% exactly the goal I had in mind when creating this! But yeah, maybe I need to redesign it a little bit to be more adapted to the bell curve, thanks again for this comment, it made me think!!
