Universal just bought up hundreds of acres north of London which they plan to use for a new upcoming theme park designated as Universal Studios Great Britain! This would be the first Universal park in Europe, and it is long overdue! I'm a local (live about 2 miles away) and this is wild. In addition to what you mentioned in regard to transport links, you can travel direct from London Gatwick Airport straight through London to Bedford. Which eventually will have a new station at the resort. Also St Pancras Station is direct which is the international train hub and Heathrow to Bedford can be done with just 1 change using the new Elizebeth line with a change at Farringdon. It's very well connected and there's another main line just to the east via Sandy and west at Milton Keynes.

there is the potential in the future as well for crossrail 2, which if it happens (more a question of when if you ask me) is planned to be a north-south route through London. Although not planned to go to Bedford, transport links to elsewhere will be improved

I live in Kempston near where this proposed universal theme park is going to be built in. At present the Trainline that's pass there daily is a small Trainline that isn't sustainable for the amount of visitors projected to visit there daily once it's built. It sounds very good on paper and no doubt a major massive boost for the area as a whole but there's going to be a need to improve travel links for that area.

This would be really good for the UK coaster industry since most of these other theme parks are mostly in close proximity (with alton towers 2 1/2 hr drive cutting it close) so they will kinda act like a full resort for tourists. U could fly into london, go Universal, then either buy a merlin pass or individual one to tour the other parks every day, again like going to florida and going disney, universal, seaworld etc

I live in Bedford & work right next to the site, the links to Bedford are perfect at this site from 90% of the UK. 2 seperate rail lines run from North to south uk & east to west plus main artery roads with Luton Airport 20 minutes away by road. I also work about half a mile from the site.

Merlin basically shut down London Resort and 100% they oppose this. Universal would 100% be the best park in the UK because of the theming Universal are capable off. They've got rights to some huge UK films which can make amazing rides.

I agree, although for the coaster enthusiasts I'd still think Merlin would have the better coasters... Unless Velocicoaster or another Intamin multilauch opens (and I definitely wouldn't complain) 😂

Merlin had nothing to do with LRs issues. It was a mix of issues, Paramount pulling out (though still licencing IPs to LR), environmental issues raised by Natural England, being near the free port of Tilsbury, the local MP withdrawing support over LRs failure to engage with the locals, and finally, they went bust.

Portaventura opened as Europe's first Universal Studios but wasn't fully owned by them, being a joint project between universal and Anheuser-Busch. It was Universal from 1995-2005 and has operated as its own entity since then, but the Universal input from the outset probably explains why it's so well themed

Don’t worry about snow here anymore it’s xmas day and 14deg C. The key thing maybe to have a majority of indoor rides to make the park rain proof and a 365 day experience. Merlins pars are very summer orientated.

For reference Islands of Adventure is 110 acres (for just the park, not including parking and backlot areas) Alton Towers is 880 acres for the park, gardens, parking and hotels. Realistically we are going to get something around the Islands of Adventure size with all of the other elements of a park (Hotels, parking, infrastructure etc.). There is also the option for Universal to buy more land in the future to the east and south of their current plot for future expansion.

Alton Towers is 520 acres including everything. Universal have bought 500 acres and they don’t have half which can’t be developed because of heritage reasons. There’s definitely space for 2 gates and a city walk and 1 or 2 hotels. They don’t need 490 acres for hotels.

Great to see that the project is going on, Theme park worldwide made a video a while ago about the overall concept of the project. I would really love to see the Ubisoft theme park to be happening though, there where talks about one in south France, apparently they had plans, but due to reasons they don't follow them anymore. There are amazing theming opportunities. An Assassin Creed drop tower? sign me up!

I mentioned on another page that a dueling version of Hollywood Drift that is James Bond themed (as a car chase) would be badass. Especially if it had indoor sections with the pyro and effects we have come to love with the Universal tram tour. Bond also works for the snowy season as a stunt show since the franchise has had numerous winter scenes in it. I'd be all for a LOTR land with maybe a wing coaster named Gwaihir (the eagle that rescues Gandalf). And I definitely agree that either Paddington or Kung Fu Panda would be an awesome kid's land for the park.

Universal have already had a park in Europe and it was Port Aventura. It used to be called Universal Mediterranea, assume you knew this. USGB would be the first studios park though.

Nice information guys, we travel to Orlando as much as we can for the theme parks, so this is such good news, but we are definitely trying Portaventura next, Alton towers is ok, but they are lacking the theming of the park, that’s my biggest gripe with our theme parks in the uk, they don’t spend on the full theme experience, so this new potential park will definitely show our parks how to theme, then hopefully the rides will be future proofed for a few years…. 👍🏼🇺🇸🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

Live right near this proposed site. They closed off Manor Road for at least a week recently. Which leads me to believe theyre looking at upgrading the train station. Something was mentioned about a possible bridge upgrade.

It'll be interesting to see how they make it 'British'. The Tussauds Group were cautious not to recreate Disneyland when turning Alton Towers & Chessington into theme parks because it was considered 'too American' so how they make this fit the British market will be interesting. For example we do Halloween very different to HHN to how they modify that, or more concerningly if other UK parks try to go American to compete and ruin what they are

I’m a bit unsure about rail connections because the line that runs closest to the park is not designed for high passenger numbers at all. It just has a piddly 2 car train running back and forth and the stations (including kempston hardwick, the closes station) are absolutely tiny. Overcrowding and/or unreliability could be a serious problem.

Fantasy Island in Ingoldmells in England has a project mapping show projected onto the mountain inside the pyramid, the space is very big and limited some of the rides, trackless dark ride with original content and flying theatre with a kuka robot arm called Guardian both have excellent theming

Love the video and its very exciting for us in the UK. I just hope its not referred as a london park as its in beford and nothing to do with london. For myself living in liverpool it would be great as 3 hours. Location is really good and ticks all the boxes. The weather i think wouldnt be a bother however they would need to account for the rain. We hardly get any snow in the uk by the way..a lot milder winters these days.

As much as i love universal in America, i feel like the appeal was it was a back lot tour which started expanding into rides based on those properties filmed in hollywood, then they build a clone park in orlando and expanded that. For a UK park, they need to partner with uk Properties, or at least uk themed. - the grand tour and have clarkson hammond and may have a fast car ride - bbc for doctor who 4D ride - willy wonka and the chocolate factory river ride (complete with chocolate waterfall) - maybe something based on andrew lloyd webbers many world famous musicals? - a rollercoaster for james bond where the car is aston martin themed and then next door maybe a 007 stunt show - maybe an interactive experience based on peaky blinders and can have the peaky blinders walking around. There can also be a 18+ bar/club. - maybe some video game stuff? America and japan have nintendo, UK can have a GTA themed attraction if they are able to partner with rockstar. The game was created by and is still lead developed by an amazing studio in scotland. - would love a documentary based dark ride with screens and effects, voiced by David Attenborough - maybe a music mash up show featuring music from the beatles, Rolling stones, The who, Led zepplin, TRex, Black Sabbath and Ozzy Osborne, blur, gorillaz, queen, the kinks, the clash, the sex pistols, the cure, oasis, pink floyd, radiohead (uks music history is so rich)

I live in Stewartby so i'll be a stones throw away from the park if/when it's built, there's actually a station in Stewartby which runs right through the old London Brickworks site so it'll be interesting to see how they use this. Also it'll bring more businesses and jobs to the area so I can (at the moment) only see it as a positive

I mean they could still have some outdoor rides open. They could add winter packages to the rides like Chessington did with mandrill mayhem (hence why it is open this winter.) Either way im still so happy thay were getting a world class theme park.

That concept looks a lot like the Epic concept we originally got that has largely been supported moving forward. I can't see a giant glass dome happening, but is there going to be a coaster where they show them? Probably. Maybe not the exact designs represented.

As an American, it would almost make sense for Universal to use the land as both a functional studio space with a smaller theme park next door. That is if Universal Studios doesn't have product space in England already. The one thing about Universal is their parks are not massive, apart from Beijing and Epic Universe. They all follow the Disneyland model of being ~100 acres. So this park is not going to be the scale of Disneyland Paris, but more so Hong Kong Disneyland. Which I think is needed. A premium Theme Park experience that can be done in a day.

The most important thing with this project for me is it will provide competition that the UK needs so then Universal can compete with Merlin which will create a chain reaction whereby Merlin improves than the local parks also improve so is a win win for the UK, my only concern Merlin Entertainments is the 2nd Largest theme park and attractions operator only behind Disney and Universal is smaller than Merlin not sure if that will impact anything but could be something to take note of.

I had assumed Universal would want the London (actual London) theme park that was announced months ago, this suggests that plan is dead in the water, probably due to costs involved in being in London. I'd be amazed if this park is built in ten years, planning alone for such a major project can take a decade

The announcements of new parks in and around London often come and go. We’ll see if having an experienced and powerful corporation behind this one makes a difference.

I think the biggest winner from this will be Thorpe Park and Legoland Windsor. Alton Towers should get some additional visitors but Thorpe must be so happy. It will make them look cheap in comparison too.

It's strange. I really have a feeling, especially from KZfaq watching, that Potter is actually more popular outside the UK than in it. Not saying it's not popular just that it's bigger outside. The depiction of a british private school hits different here. It's not as novel as it is to everybody else. Here Harry Potter is just about magic, elsewhere it's about British stuff too.

As I live in Cambridgeshire and there's literally no theme parks as my local is 1.5 hours away which is a crappy pleasure beach with a Vekoma MK1200 and an SLC so I'm happy I'm getting a new local especially being a Universal Park. Also, I'd love to see a Harry Potter themed Mack Multi Launch like Voltron at Europa Park, not necessarily like a near clone, but just something not to compact but not too big, maybe with a beyond vertical launch or a turntable like Voltron, as long as it's long and unique, I think it would be sick but I don't know if it would fit with Universal or not, as they go for more bigger attractions.

In a way having a big Universal park can benefit for other parks. As Sarah mentioned , Arguably Paris is a bigger theme park draw and the ability to draw more tourist theme park goers. With a major park in England the other parks in the area can siphon off that demand.

It definitely seems like its in the early stages. Knowing municipal planning and what not it seems like they're in the stages of figuring out if this is within what they can do without opposition from locals and politicians or government factors. All the legal stuff which I assume they might already have done by now. Uf they get through that and get the green light which I assume the have, we'll likely now start seeing further designs and planning starting that then goes through similar hearings and planning processes before getting a green light for construction. So if it happens it'll still be a few years down the road, maybe 2 years before we know the final design of the park and then construction. But this sounds really interesting! The only real megadestination theme park in Europe right now is Disneyland, its the only one you'll see ads for across the continent, you won't ever see that for other parks, not even Europa park. Universal Studios Britain could be the one

I wonder if it will hurt ticket sales here in Orlando. Such a huge number of visitors from Uk and Ireland. Bedford folk should visit 192 Irlo Bronson hwy to better regulate development off property though that weirdness is more related to Disney visitors.

If this happens then its huge. The theme park industry in the UK will level up massively because places like thorpe park and alton towers will need to invest massively to keep guests

Realistically I'm thinking a advanced Motion Base (Jurassic Park/doctor who), slow moving dark ride (paddington). Stunt show like bourne but James Bond and an intimin multi launch plus a family coaster. Ideally I'd love them to get the Aardman Rights (Wallace and Gromit) plus a cloudy Meatball rapids. There's bound to be a HP area (yawn) as it just prints money for universal

I’m extremely confident Comcast/NBC Universal would have spoken to the government and local council already about this and been given the green light, potential information about tax breaks which I’m sure would be forthcoming. Comcast arguably have the best relationship with the British government out of any other European country. Sky, film production and a whole load of other things take place here already, people just don’t see it. I’m confident it’ll happen, could they afford to buy this land just on a whim and sell it? Yes. Do I think they have? No. They’ve had assurances.

It's worth noting that, from a US perspective, everything is close to everywhere else in the UK because the UK is a small country. However, there's a cultural difference which comes with that. An American might drive for 2 hours just to visit a fast food place they like, whereas the same trip in the UK is considered something like a full-on expedition. Just because something is "only 2 hours away" in the UK, that doesn't mean the same thing as it does it the US. The flip side is that the US perceives time to be longer than the UK does. Something which is from the 1920s may be considered a "historical relic" in the US, whereas in the UK something doesn't achieve the same status unless it is several centuries old. For instance, Cadbury's - the chocolate manufacturer - just turned 200 years old this year... but it isn't really considered a historic institution or anything, beloved through it is. It's "vintage" at best. As to the park itself, I'm glad it's being built. We haven't got a real theme park resort destination in the UK (despite many companies trying to create them), so I'm eager to have a real "destination" close by... in relative terms. 😁

Right, you did a Cameo for me right where 'The Ultimate' was my favourite UK coaster (it was nuts on those corners..).. 🤣 Well.. when this opens, THAT would be a serious shake up. I'd go from growing up with Drayton Manor as my home park... to this. THIS would be my new home park, I'd be 30 mins from it!! I'd be getting a season ticket and going SO MUCH. Bedford itself is a pretty unassuming place, in parts, a bit run down, but they are improving many areas of it - never expected a theme park of this scale here though! But yeah, 'London Luton Airport', a bit like London Stansted, is not in London - it's just in the South but they want people to land there =P So many people ask taxis to 'take them to the centre' and then are very confused when they're trying to find major London landmarks in the centre of, er, beautiful Luton ha Can't believe this is coming here though. Absolutely insane!!
