Thank you so much for this video! I'm going to be an undergraduate student next year and I intend to pursue a career in Higher Education Lecturing. Your channel is the most helpful resource I've found so far.

I am an undergraduate student and the big dream for me is to follow an academic career. I am currently phasing the dilemma of whether if am I going to take a placement year or just finish my studies. Is having a placement year really worth the time (is it going to boost me at any level to a potential academic career)? In other words, are such qualifications as working in the industry expected from someone chasing an academic career? Your video is really helpful by the way!!

A placement can help give you experience of working in industry or to get a feel of what PhD research would be like. At my uni BSc physics students get the option of a year placement but they are a mandatory part of the MPhys course. Benefits are: you get to build your network of contacts, you can get new references, you may get paid, you can see if you like the type of work, you can sometimes attend conferences and represent the company/academic establishment, you may get to contribute to a paper or go to a conference and it might open up options to apply for future jobs. But, the placement may add a year to your studies and, depending on your academic field, it’s most likely not a requirement to progress your career. So, lots to think about! If you have a personal tutor they might be able to help you decide which route is best. I’ll add placements as a future video too; a fun part of my job is visiting students out on placement! Thanks for watching the videos 😊

Balancing completing your studies but also working out your next career step can be tricky - I remember trying to juggle both! If you have a good uni careers service they might be helpful?
