Leeds has an appealing campus that feels safe and quite cosy. The campus is located right between the smart and vibrant city centre and the leafy streets and red brick Victorian houses around beautiful Woodhouse Moor, Hyde Park and Headingley where many students live. It is a lovely place to be a student.

I studied Computer Science at Leeds 1983-87 before PCs came into mainstream use and this video brought back so many memories of a joyful 4 years living and learning in Leeds. It was an emotional experience watching your tour of the campus where much is still the same as 34 years ago. I hope you had as much fun as I did. Thanks for making the video.

Oh my gosh, I'm a physics student at Leeds and this is the first time seeing the new building. I must say... it's absolutely stunning. Can't wait to arrive next month to see it in person.

Isn't it just!! I think COVID has delayed plans to move in so it might not be until 2021 now :( but honestly, I'm taking modules from the computer science department and physics department in second semester and I cannot wait if the building is ready for then😍

@@zakr1187 Even though I study maths, I've studied modules from the school of physics and astronomy and I've absolutely LOVED them! I have friends who have done astrophysics and really enjoyed it so yes, would definitely recommend!!

There are 27,000 universities in the world. This year Leeds University is ranked at 86 the QS international tables which brings it within the top one third of one percent of world universities.. It is of course a Russell group university. The top 100 employers in the UK (ie The High Flyers' report viewable online) ) publish an annual ranking of the 20 universities whose graduates they favour most. In the real world this counts for quite a lot more than the often baffling and sometimes downright bizarre national rankings that appear in publications like the Times and the Guardian (Lancaster and Loughborough universities were consistently placed as top ten universities in the Times national rankings???!!! They are good universities but they do not even make it into the top 20 universities most favoured by major employers). For 2022 the High Flyers' list places Leeds at number 5. Cambridge is ranked at number 7 and Oxford is ranked at number 10. As the principal city outside London for banking and legal services Leeds is the wealthiest city in the north of England with upmarket shops, restaurants and cafes. The university is 10 minutes walk from the thriving city centre. On and around the safe and serene campus there is some lovely architecture and a buzzing social scene. In the city centre there are many attractive Neo Classical and Victorian buildings as well as glass and steel commercial premises. Of the UK's 120 universities Leeds falls consistently within the top three for the number of applicants. With an impressive international standing for the quality of its research and a first rate social scene Leeds will always be a serious choice for a great many academically gifted undergraduates and postgraduates.

A friend of a friend once spent the night on the Hermes sculpture of the Roger Stevens. He had fallen off the top of the building after having one too many sherbets. Hermes, amongst other things, is the Greek god of luck; and fertility. Considering the fall I think his luck might have run out on the fertility front.

Congrats on getting in!! That's a difficult one to tell! Uni for me started back this week and I haven't been into campus yet and it's not looking like I will have much teaching there this semester :( the pandemic has disrupted things slightly :(

Ellie Sleightholm ohh great, thank you! :) I do have a q actually - although I love the sound of the course I’d be applying to @ Leeds (International History and Politics👌🏾) I’m a little worried that the uni itself won’t be for me? Ofc I want to have a good time at uni but I very much doubt I’d be really into the clubbing scene (at least not often anyway) so I’m worried the joys of Leeds would be wasted on me a bit😅 do you roughly think that’ll be the case from your experience? Also - bit of a rogue one - when getting allocated accommodation some unis make you write a little bio or fill out a questionnaire about you and your personality so you’re matched with ppl, in theory, you’d get a long with. Do you happen to know if Leeds does that? No worries if not! Thanks again😊

@@jas_313 no problem at all! Not at all - I've found with Leeds that there is such a huge variety of different personality types! In first year I was in a flat with half students who loved a night out and the other half that didn't enjoy going out! Everyone at University meets people that are suited to their personality types - it might not happen straight away but that's just the way University goes! I met some amazing friends in first year but it wasnt until second year that I made some amazing course friends who were better suited to my personality. I'm releasing a video later today (maybe tomorrow depending on my internet!) about maths at university and in it I spend a bit of time talking about meeting friends. In terms of what Leeds has to offer - it has way more than just the nightclubs! Accommodation wise, from what I remember we didn't have to fill out any bio but we did have to fill a questionnaire that asks questions about living arrangements so whether you want to live with mixed gender, undergraduate only, vegetarian only, ensuites vs shared shower facilities, etc. However, it's been 2 years since i applied so it might have changed slightly! Sorry for the long message - hope it helped!! Xxx

@@jas_313 Hey, I graduated this year from UoL and I never went clubbing once. I didn't make friends till 3rd year but I think that's a highly personal experience due to depression and living at home after 1st year. In 1st year I lived in halls (an annex to Lyddon Hall, housing 15 people, I think it was called 32 Springfield Mount) but I struggled quite a lot, so I decided to live at home. I think if you are prone to having depression bouts and aren't good at making friends, you should consider studying near home. However, I know not all students who don't like to club aren't like me lol. I do think that going to University of York would have been better for me, because most people I lived with in 1st year did go clubbing a lot (and woke me up at 4am regularly), and I felt pretty alone in that, and this uni attracts those kinds of people. Since it attracts those kinds of people, I feel like I could have met more likeminded people at a more mellow uni such as York, but I don't have any experience of being there, so I may have had the same experience there. My current friends don't club, but we go to a bar called Pixel Bar (a gaming bar in the town centre), and I think it's a decent compromise when you don't want to drink (if that's the case for you). Many societies don't involve alcohol either, and even if they do, you can just attend the regular events (say like in sports clubs). I really recommend going to a society that involves food -- I was in the vegan and vegetarian society and it made it a lot easier to talk over food. But yeah, if I could whisper into my year 13 self's voice, I might tell them to go to York instead, as I feel like I'd have made more friends there. But I don't regret coming to Leeds, because after a while, you get used to it and start to feel a bit nostalgic about it when you're not there, and I did enjoy my course (maths).

oh I'm thinking about doing maths at Leeds - i like that they offer the 30 credits ( i think thats right) where you can do a little something different too- do you know anything about that ?

discovery modules!! Depending on your course you get given a certain number of modules that can be used to take discovery modules! So in first year, I had 20 credits over the year and I chose one module from my own department (which you can do) and then one from the school of physics!! Super good and really helpful if you want to try something new! :)

I'm so glad! It's obviously very different this year with the social side of university having gone but that's the same at any uni! It shouldn't put you off going for a degree because you should do a degree for you and what you want in life!☺️ I personally love Leeds and although it will be difficult (if covid is still as bad) when you first start uni, I personally found my closest friends in second year and even with covid this year, I wouldn't change doing a degree for the world!

Lookingbac k, I foundth at all UK universities I know areapp roaching the education insl ightly an imbalanced fashion. Either that, orthe system does not allow for certain things. Something about the uk felt pseudo-socialistto me, now that I thinkab out it from the United States. That drive I see in almost every American campus, that drive and spark is missing, replaced with synicism in the UK. Why is that? I am actually curious.
