When we discuss grad school and funding I know most of us are really focused on grants and fellowships. These are super important but sometimes they are hard to come by. With that said, check out my past videos on finding grad funding so you can use Student Loans as a LAST resource! - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pbBkkq1pycy-YWw.html and make sure you avoid these funding mistakes I made - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/aK5gf8Z629_NZ5s.html

Ughhhh you have no idea how helpful this is. I’m a first gen Mexican, single mom and head of household. I have a mortgage and other bills to pay, while attending FNP school and working full time. Working full time and FNP school isn’t sustainable and I didn’t know how to go about getting some living expenses covered to cut down my work hours. Thank you sooo much for posting this

It is a bit unclear to me the way a tuition waver changes the amount of student loans available. The FA department tells me the PLUS load will be reduced or eliminated based on the tuition waiver, but they have been unclear (after many emails) how this will change the standard student loan. This is the best video yet!

I am glad this is useful! It helps to have a professional talk about it! I do have one other video (you may have seen it) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gMVlhbWQp97akqs.html But here its shows how they define the costs/loan amount. I think it depends on your university but Fee waivers cover in state tuition at UCLA and so they subtract that part from the loan and leave the out of state amount available. It may be similar at your institution! I am sorry they are being very helpful! I hope this was helpful!

Thanks for the info. But I truly feel this country sets its citizens up for failure. The fact that interest acrrues while you're in school is savagely cruel. The employment standards demand higher education, and the federal government makes it almost impossible.

I genuinely cannot disagree with you. What you say makes perfect sense. Its a horrible system and that makes "following your dreams" basically financially impossible. Thank you for taking the time to comment!

I’ve ran into an issue with financial at my institution that has made me extremely upset. I am enrolled in 9 Semester hours, master promissory note is completed, and I have my loan disclosure statement to verify that what amount that I should have. Earlier in the semester I have a certain amount but when I log back in, it has been adjusted significantly! I’ve emailed and reported the institution because it has affected my livelihood since I had to cut down To go to school and be a full Time caretaker. What are my options to fix this before disbursements this week at my institution 😭

Great video, but I was confused as to why your guest presented it as such a negative that international students and illegal aliens could not access federal loans? Why would people from other countries have access to our federal government loans? Shouldn't that money be focused on those of us who are citizens and pay taxes? Other than that, very informative, thank you!
@BrisaMarie

Hi! Thank you so much for the compliment! Both Sara and I are really invested in all students getting access to graduate school. Unfortunately in the US education is super expensive and for a lot of low-income people federal loans are their only options. Regardless of someone's citizenship status it's important to us to empathize and recognize the circumstances all people come from. Many people who are not citizens pay US taxes and participate in US economy and deserve support. It's a common misconception that people who are not fully naturalized do not pay taxes or support US economy but it's just misinformation rather than fact. Regardless of their participation or not, many people who are not citizens have very very limited options for financial support for grad school in the US. Which is generally negative for people who want grad school to be accessible. I am so happy that you found this video informative! Thank you for commenting

It's a matter of empathy too. If it's hard on citizens, then that stress is magnified for non-citizens. My understanding is they're allowed to work 2 years with a bachelors degree in their profession, like an "on the job training" so they don't even receive the same pay, as a citizen(co-worker) who has the same credentials and expertise(that sucks) and yes, they pay taxes. Most have to save that money if they're planning to further their education at a graduate level. I'd feel a bit salty about it. On the flip side, if they received a government loan there wouldn't be enough time to pay it off in a short time as a non-citizen. So, much respect to those who succeed.
