Signals was my intro to Rush. Over the years, Grace Under Pressure and Power Windows have grown on me and now I really enjoy them. Hemispheres is still my favorite 70s period album. The 2015 DMM version sounds incredible. Take care…

Hey Tim! Found a copy of Permanent Waves in the wild . Incredible sound from this one and I bought mainly because it was pressed by the DMM technology. Beats the hell out of my old one that I thought sounded awesome. So I gave that one to a friend and JEP the DMM!😂

I'm sure you're well aware that what you heard in that intro was no where near what your audience heard (KZfaq is no where near audiophile). I bet Rush albums are more available there than here in Canada, because we played the shit out of our copies. Glad you found some gems.

Great work Tim. Wish I had this knowledge about 2 weeks ago when I came across some rush albums ha! The hunt will continue

Ok…regarding Permanent Waves…your recommendation is superior to my 2015. There’s more clarity present especially for the cymbal-work. Thanks so much again for the recommendations. Even though I couldn’t hear a difference for Signals, own the dark purple copy is worth it alone for the rareness of it. 🤘🏼

Happy Thanksgiving Tim. Enjoyed the video and being from Canada and a massive Rush fan I did not know about this pressing. I have most of my Rush records on the Anthem label including Permanent Waves. I may try and hunt the Permanent Waves version with Ray's cut just to compare. Time to listen to 2112. Take care and congrats on 10K SUBS.

Happy thanksgiving Tim. Since my teens have been into Rush. Being from Canada all of my pressings are pretty much Canadian pressings. My Canadian Signals still sounds great. Great stuff Tim! Cheers.

Are Canadian pressings good? Better than the US pressings?

Hi Tim, if you like this period/style of Rush you might also want to check out Yes Drama. Very similar and the OG pressing is solid.

Many thanks…just bought both of them from Discogs. The only thing I can compare them to is the 2015 200g Acoustic Sounds versions. I hope they don’t disappoint! Thanks for the content. I’ll update my thoughts on how they compare when I receive them and get a chance to listen to them. 🤘🏼

Ok..just finished cleaning Signals and comparing the version you referenced with my 200g 2015 DMM version. And….I can’t hear a difference. MAYBE the china crash cymbal is a bit more clear on the 2015 but I’m grasping at straws here. I’m playing both on a Technics SL-1200MK5 with a Nagaoka MP-110. As I do believe equipment matters maybe I’ll hear a difference when I upgrade my cartridge. Regardless, I’m not sorry that I bought your recommendation at all. Presently, Permanent Waves is waiting for me in the mailbox. When I clean it and do a comparison with my 2015 version I’ll touch base again. Thanks for the videos…🤘🏼

I've got an RL Signals that I got by pure chance. I was in Portland Oregon on business in fall 2017 and went to a record store for the first time since getting back into records. There was a $3 copy of Signals there with a shredded cover, but the disk looked pristine. So I picked it up and I was pretty stunned by the sound. It's a digital master, too. Goes to show the importance of not compressing the sound + good mastering choices. I also have a "Ray's cut" Permanent Waves, again just by chance. I picked it up almost as an afterthought on a Discogs order from the UK and it's a UK pressing.

Wow, Tim, RUSH... I swear your taste is getting better and better in your old age 😁 Seriously, most interesting as usual, I honestly learn SO damn much from you Tim! I've had both albums from when I bought them new when they came out, but I had no idea about the BK/RL pressings of Signals. I will be damn sure to check on that, thanks! I was able to trade away a rather dull and lifeless sounding DCC Aqualung, which somehow many seem to like, for a lovely mint 1st UK Rays pressing of Permanent Waves, and WOW did it blow away my standard US pressing big time! (I also got an absolutely lovely MFSL Dead Can Dance - Into the Labyrinth in trade for the Tull album 😊) I'll hafta look again, I guess I had thought the deadwax showed a 'R.A.Y.S', but it's been a while. You really have me curious though about the Signals album, I really do need to see which pressing I have. Good to know about the RL! I was just reading a recent interview with Geddy Lee (just got his book too) and he admitted that he got so obsessed with keyboards that he literally 'Drowned' out the rest of the band, which reached a saturation point with Hold Your Fire, which I feel is absolutely *THE* most boring RUSH album in existence (it's their only album I flat out don't like - strangely with Hemispheres as a close 2nd. Don't know why I've never quite been able to get into that one, although for many it is their favourite. Maybe what I feel is a lack of focus in the arrangements or something, IDK...) Thankfully right after that, they got back to their @ss-Kicking Rock roots! BTW, I don't know how much of a RUSH fan you are (in between listening to all that Dylan and XTC stuff 😀) but, if you like Vapor Trails, be *SURE* to get the later remixed version. The band members even admitted that somehow the mastering of the original pressing was pretty terrible, the remix sounds a LOT better - I got it quite a while ago so I don't know how much it goes for now. If you do like their stronger Rock sound, try to score a nice copy of Counterparts (the remaster) if possible, although it is pretty costly now. Clockwork Angels has fantastic material on it, but sadly the sound quality is pretty lame...

Power Windows is an incredible sounding album.
@dirtharris8 ай бұрын
It really isn't. Really thin and weedy sounding .... all top, no bottom... drums sound miles away .... just very 80s. You might like the tinkly bells and whistles synth sounds, and 80s production values .... but the actual sound of guitar, bass drums, vocals .... is not good. No balls. No body.Terry Brown was sorely missed during their 80s period.

@@dirtharris sounds great on my rig. Granted I run dual subs but that s because I also have Paradigm Prestige 15b loud speakers. Extremely excellent detail but needs subs.

I've owned Signals since 1982. It's not just the pressings playback, it's the recording quality. My hype sticker fell off!! The trilogy of Permanent Waves, Moving Pictures, Signals was triumphant on FM radio. *IMO Japanese pressings of these are quite good.

Hi. Are the Canadian first pressings any good or superior in sound? For Signals
@Universityofvinyl6 ай бұрын
I would think so if they're in excellent, NM condition.

Hi, just noticing you have one speaker in a corner (two walls) and the other speaker up against one wall. Surely this imbalance of placement shows in the sound? Just asking?
@Universityofvinyl8 ай бұрын
Both are toed-in and my listening position is about 9 ft away, getting a great soundstage with good imaging. I’ve had these for about two months and not averse to tinkering as needed. 👍🏻

@@Universityofvinyl With one of your speakers very close to a side and the back wall, surely there is some imbalance in sound? Not being pedantic, just curious.
