Frontwoman Brittney Slayes says about "Abyss":
"This track set the tone for the whole record; conceptually, lyrically, musically, it all started here. Andy came up with the opening riff back when we were writing Apex, but I knew right away it didn't belong on that record. When we finally started writing Abyss in 2019, this was the first song we wrote and it was the first song I listened to when the record was done. It symbolizes five years of hard work for us, and I think it does a great job of putting the listener in the right place emotionally to start the record. It hints at what the rest of the album is all about, but also doesn't give it all away, not by a long shot!"

Almost 2 years later, this was the first UTA song I ever heard, I was on the brink of a complete mental breakdown and just randomly picked this song off KZfaq suggestions because I just wanted to hear anything besides the thoughts in my head at that moment. I couldn't have asked for a better guide, they took me over the deep end, unearthed a series of repressed childhood traumas, rebuilt me as a character from my favorite book series as a kid and helped me feel like a normal human BECAUSE of everything that happened to me and everything wrong with me. I wept the entire time, reliving decades of my pain and how it had shaped me. One song, rather than the usual "things will be ok" UTA said "you are always OK, I'll help you prove it to yourself". It was the missing 2nd half of Wesley's "life is pain..." that completed a circle of understanding and awareness I'd sought for over 30 years. I don't know if UTA saved my life, but I know they saved me from a life of suffering needlessly. Something about their music is so perfectly them, a self harmony each of them manages to convey side by side together, to show us that we don't have to lose ourselves nor isolate ourselves to be happy or successful, to find peace and community. Thanks again UTA, almost 2 years later, still my favorite band, still loving life as I learn how every day. Your music broke my cycle of self doubt and self hatred where convention failed repeatedly and hope had been lost. I hope this flows to all the world, the power to change through acceptance. I am no longer a hateful monolith of my suffering, and every day is better than the last.

Honestly, i'd be curious to see what the immortal being from their songs' tales would look like as a PC. Maybe a max level Eldritch knight, or a multi-class of Battlemaster/wizard(transfiguration or evocation, given varying lyrics/info)? The being is clearly capable of advanced combat, given the context of songs like 'Ten Thousand Against One,' and one can assume that he's also a spell caster, given lines from several songs, namely "oceans arise at my command," from 'The Wind That Shapes the Land." Thoughts?

Lyrics Open my eyes in a daze How long has it been? Am I so out of place? Warmth I can no longer feel My mountain is gone, I'm surrounded by steel The strangest of structures arises ahead Seems to be held up by nothing Where have I gone, do I dream? How can the stars be all I can see? Dark embrace Has someone awakened me? Please show your face Cold and quiet space Out so far beyond stars and the sun Filling my heart up with wonder, unknown Now, to the edge of imagination Open my eyes to phenomenon, and hope Feverishly I explore Searching for someone, there has to be more I can't be the only one here My path always guides me, there's nothing to fear Then why do I feel so immensely alone This can't be the end of my story Onward I go once again Fighting my way to my final breath Into the abyss Out so far beyond stars and the sun Filling my heart up with wonder, unknown Now, to the edge of imagination Open my eyes to phenomenon, and hope Summon the strength of millenniums past Forged by the fire and flame I am the weapon of empires vast Immortal is more than a name Out so far beyond stars and the sun Filling my heart up with wonder, unknown Now, to the edge of imagination Open my eyes to phenomenon, and hope Cry into the chasm ahead Into the sky never ending, although Time will tell if I'm worthy of it A future of final transcending, alone

Open my eyes in a daze How long has it been?

That would certainly be the "happy" ending, but I don't know that it's best. Perhaps a passing of the torch to the 4th (good) son or the grandchild and The Immortal can fade into the afterlife. First listened to this band by coincidence. It just happened to be in one of those curated Spotify playlists, and it was this song. And boy, I love it since. Everytime I hear this song, it gives me goosebumps
