Something rotten is brewing beneath the industrial mecca known as Raccoon City. Unknown to its millions of residents, a huge underground bioengineering facility known as The Hive has accidentally unleashed the deadly and mutating T-virus, killing all of its employees. To contain the leak, the governing supercomputer, Red Queen, has sealed all entrances and exits. Now a team of highly-trained super commandos including Rain (Michelle Rodriguez - The Fast and the Furious, Girlfight), Alice (Milla Jovovich - The Fifth Element) and Matt (Eric Mabius - Cruel Intentions) must race to penetrate The Hive in order to isolate the T-virus before it overwhelms humanity. To do so, they must get past the Red Queen's deadly defenses, face the flesh-eating undead employees, fight killer mutant dogs and battle The Licker, a genetically mutated savage beast whose strength increases with each of its slain victims.

The first Resident Movie was actually scary. It had the whole horror theme set up, that's why even without the zombies, it was disturbing. The second wasn't bad, it introduced the Nemesis and everything, but it lost this touch. Everything that came after the second one was pretty much just garbage, like unbearably bad movies, but compel people to watch them because of the name. I'm just glad they called quits on this series finally.

This was a very good choice for an opening scene cause it makes you realise that all the zombies you'll see next are not just monsters, but used to be people...people who scratched and crawled for their lives but ended up dying a horrible death that turned them into these horrifying creatures

That's the true nature of horror, right there. Fear is knowing the monster wants to kill you, but horror is realizing where it came from. The zombies are scary, but knowing they were once people is the part that makes it horrifying. And also very tragic.

It also establishes just how much of a malicious sociopath the RED QUEEN is. The elevator scene is more dramatically obvious where she teased those people with hope of escape before she finally offed them, but she also deliberately drowned the scientists in the lab instead of just sucking out the air like she did elsewhere. No fire axe was going to cut through an air-sealed reinforced steel door, and with only a fire suppression system to work with, it no doubt took several minutes just for the water to reach as high as their knees. That room looks (a very rough guess, I'll admit) about 12 feet floor to ceiling and maybe 50 feet wall to wall. It would have taken over an hour, if not longer, before it finally filled up with water. And every second they were alive, she was watching them scream and struggle and cry and beg.

the Red Queen's killing method 1. Laboratory - Drown 2. Office - Toxic Gas 3. Elevator - Lethal drop 4. Corridors - Neural toxic gas Killing them didn't do much but after they reanimated as a zombie she lured them with sound and lock them in the rooms or the lower levels so they can't escape but unfortunately the "Team" shut her down unintentionally releasing them from the rooms

But the red queen followed the best protocol in this case, she detected an extremely contagious and dangerous harmful agent with the potential to end the human race and took the necessary measures. Brutal but necessary measures, if no one had gone there in the first instance to try to rescue survivors, all the tragedies that followed would have been avoided. Although we are talking about a company completely corrupt and full of mad scientists with evil bosses, then humanity would be lost sooner or later, it just shows that the red queen was the real heroine of the film.

@@George_D.10 At least it is a quick death though. Not too bad from a headshot. Of all the ways to go, it's really not that bad. Brain death is in 2 to 3 seconds after decapitation. Shock will be immediate and you probably won't feel anything at all.

Omg! Sooo I actually wrote a short story based on this exact scenario. Instead of Alice, I based it on the people in the elevator and their fight for survival as they try to escape the Hive. The survivors also have to face their guilt for creating these experiments.. the very same experiments that is now hunting them down, the Lickers, their co-workers, the dogs, I even added the Hunters for extra fun lol. It was 75 pages long, and I saved it to a floppy disc! I lost the floppy disc 😫

I mean, if you think about it, out of all of the Umbrella staff who were killed here, she was probably the luckiest. The elevator likely would have decapitated her, leading to a quick and painless death, and because she was decapitated, she wouldn't come back as a zombie.

The first resident evil is really the best one for me. Still remember seeing it when I was on elementary and was in love with horror gore by then. It got me really fascinated with horror that I started watching the descent and hellraiser too.

You'd think Umbrella would have a closed air supply in their most dangerous labs. Actually, I'd to like entertain the idea that they do, but being who they are they chose to let this outbreak happen. With that theory in mind it's actually interesting how when the Red Queen first detects the leak (0:07) she activates the "Biohazard System" (see top right), only for the graphics display to seemingly glitch out and switch to "Scanning". The glitched graphics do not reoccur in later scenes when the same graphics display switches, and I also noticed that when she starts gassing the workers with Halon her own system warns her of the new biohazard. It's just an entertaining fan theory, but it's fun to think that Umbrella may have intentionally programmed the Red Queen such that if there ever was a leak of the T-Virus, she would not contain it as per protocol but rather facilitate its spread throughout the facility, making it a valuable expertiment for Umbrella. If that's what they did, they probably even had plans for possibly releasing the virus themselves at some future time. EDIT: I just noticed, the hallway in which the employees are gassed is apparently sealed (3:13, 3:26), but the lab is not? Hmmmmm...

Watched this as a child with my big brother and I had nightmares for months and I watched a lot of horror movies as a kid and somehow this scene scared me the most! to this day, every time I see an elevator I lowkey panic, I even refuse to have alexa hooked up to things incase she goes postal.

The only Resident Evil-film that reached this level of fright. The based it on survival horror, while the sequels relied more on action. This is why the first film is my favorite.

I think the most haunting thing about the flooded room given how it’s not nearly as graphic as the others and only implies what will happen to those trapped, is realizing how *long* it would take to fill up a room with a sprinkler system in reality. It would have taken so long that they would have slowly suffocated with their heads above water before they drowned.

Actually only 31% were infected at the point the fatal gas was released in the main lobby--you can see the percent on the Red Queen's computer viewpoint if you pause the movie.

Although is an amazing scene the first movie was like a spinoff. It was never a part of the big picture. The guy who released the virus stole it to sell himself when it was unfinished. But the Umbrella Corporation's initial plan was to sell the virus as well to reduce the population of mankind. So I consider this movie as 0.5th movie of the series. An action full of introduction of T-virus.

Its likely the doors would have automatically opened in the event the sprinklers went off normally, but the whole point of this scene was that the Red Queen detected the T-Virus was loose in the facility and after analysing the threat activated it's failsafe: Kill everyone to prevent the T-Virus from spreading to the outside world, where it would threaten humanity.

The fact that the lab that contained the virus samples was not at least BSL 3 or BSL 4 is hilarious. At least in the video games it made sense how the outbreak occurred as the release was on purpose. But it doesn't even seem like they have a dual airlock system with either UV or bleach decor setup.

T virus release in games was not on purpose, the mutant G ambushed the umbrella spec ops squad in the sewers and caused the breaking of a t virus vial which spread to rats and subsequently the water system. Non of it was intended.

My favorite RE hands down! I honestly would of wanted to suffocate from the halogen gas that the Red Queen pumped into many of those labs and rooms. I wouldn't want to be some of the last few dozen or even hundred survivors in The Hive when those who just died start reanimating from the T-Virus and begin tearing into the flesh of those left over.... Zero chance of survival. That's pretty horrific.

I agree completely, everyone inside that facility had 0% of survival, and knowing how evil the red queen is... She probably would've used them all as guinea pigs for a fucked up science experiment, take for example: capturing and then using the left over survivors as unwilling test subjects, and subjecting them to unspeakable horror, or some kind of twisted game of target practice for their BOW, just to see what it was capable of doing.
