I've got a single malt scotch whisky from the Kilchoman distillery on Islay today. This is the 13th Edition of their 100% Barley release. I'll taste it and give you my thoughts. Cheers!

I've had the 10th, 11th and 12th but have not yet seen the 13th. It's one I buy every year whenever I see it. I haven't had a Kilchoman yet that I didn't like. The quality in everything they produce is something you can really taste

The purest in me drew me in and although so truly appreciate this 100% exbourbon to explore Kilchoman distillate, I found myself enjoying batch 12 more… some integrated Sherry made that one pop for me. Cheers 🥃

Awesome review man and glad you're doing ok after the earthquake(judging by the comments on that bit). I feel like I'm in the minority in this being my favourite expression from Kilchoman but I adored the 10th and 12th edition and would love the opportunity to try this 100% ex-bourbon version of it. But your caution about this not being like other Kilchoman whiskies is a really important one. If you are here for "big phenol energy" this isn't the whisky for you lol. Cheers man!

Hi Geoff, great review. (As expected). The 13th. edition is on my Kilchoman shopping list. Had a tasting some time ago where we did taste the 2016 100% Isla version and that was right after a Springbank tasting. And that version was more or less equal for me to the Springbank local barley 11 years. Yes, a different Kilchoman but a great one.

Fair point about needing to add water. I'm happy when I like the whisky neat but feel it's improved with water. But when water's essential to my enjoyment, that's a bit of a bummer. Those LCBO prices man... way too much for this bottle. 🥃

I always feel the 100% Islay's are quite fresh and zingy, whereas the Islay Barley from Bruichladdich feels more earthen and dusty; funny that... Haven't had this one but had the two previous ones and both were fantastic! Glad you liked it Geoff, cheers!!

Agree. Definitely more lively and zesty stuff out of Bruichladdich. This is heavier and smokier. Different but there's a certain comparison to be made. Cheers buddy! 🥃

Thanks for reviewing this 100% ... er Islay (not 100% barley as it always is with malt), Geoff. Correct in the thumbnail, incorrect named at the start of the review. But you described correct later on. That being said, loved this stuff: no grape influence, not too sweet, peated (albeit not too much). One regret for me: bought only one bottle... Slàinte mhath

I was actually against trying this bottle because I dont always enjoy straight bourbon matured whiskies. But you definitely have peaked my curiosity and since these were actually pretty easy to get here a while ago, i’ll check if i can get one still

Not really the same, but I guess if it's close to anything it'd be an Islay Barley. Halfway between a PC Islay Barley and a Bruichladdich Islay Barley. 🥃

Can any scotch made in Islay be truly considered 100% Islay if the barrels came from another country? I.e Bourbon casks? I would think the barrel cooperage itself would need to be in Islay and matured in virgin oak from Islay for that 100% lslay label to be accurate
