Getting rare materials from the ground into your phone is ugly. The mining industry is responsible for air and water pollution and the destruction of entire landscapes. But what if we could replace the mining industry on Earth with a clean process that can’t harm anyone? Well, we can. All we need to do is look up.

The end of the video had me super exited, because unlike Dyson Spheres and other megastructures, asteroid mining like this could realistically happen before 2050 if the governments of the earth stop fighting over land and oil and actually focused on improving our future.

Out in space there is LITERALLY an UNLIMITED amount of usable materials for us to gather. Not just in our solar system but in other systems too. With the countless stars in the galaxy and beyond we need only imagine what there is out there. All we need is some VERY smart people who can help us do these things and very advanced equipment to get the job done.

Actually the metals we get from space would become worthless from the amount we would have from large scale mining. The more platinum we have, the more common it is. Thus lowering the price. In a business standpoint, it would cost way more to mine than you would make. But in terms of human advancemen, it would be invaluable. Priceless even

Asteroid mining sounds really great. Not just to save Earth but also possibly to guide a large asteroid close to earth and turn that large asteroid into a foundation for a space colony as it's cheaper and less work than build a space colony by parts.

This is where Crown corporations come in (similar to state owned companies in countries outside the Commonwealth). In Canada most of the major resource and infrastructure developers started as Crown corporations because no one other than the government was willing or able to take the risk. These are also usually organised on a not-for-profit basis where, depending on the charter authorising it, any potential profits either went to reducing cost, improving service, into government coffers, or sometimes into a "legacy fund" of some sort. (Many of these were privatised in the late 80's, with a rapid decline in services and increase in cost following. Ironically, many of these are major providers of essential services so in times of strife the government still has to bail it out anyway without having the benefit of reaping the profits in good times. Air Canada is one of these former Crown corporations that were privatised and has had to be bailed out on numerous occasions.) One notable exemption to a crown corporation being made to fill a gap is several telecom companies that were privately owned but wouldn't take on the cost to provide service to remote areas unless they were granted a chartered monopoly for a given area, thereby guaranteeing a return profit. And before someone says monopolies are inherently bad, the major difference is that these are chartered monopolies they come with conditions, regulatory oversight, and can be revoked. It is likely that the country which to achieve asteroid mining first will be China because they're organised essentially like a nation sized company.

@@planescaped The real problem is asteroid mining would require unpralleled international cooperation on regulations for asteroid mining and peace. If a country or even a private companty screws up safety measures a little bit, a rock crashing on earth could cause world war 3.

It depends on what you mean by "helping the Earth". Helping poorer nations? Yes, it will help. Stopping climate change? Well, it's complicated. If there is a reasonable alternative - some current power holders will most likely switch, unless it is too expensive in the short term. But what is most likely is that current billionaires will just expand into space, while leaving the state of the earth production the same, reaping the monetary benefits from both.

This transcript paints a fascinating picture of the potential future of resource acquisition. It's intriguing to consider how asteroid mining could alleviate some of the environmental and geopolitical pressures associated with traditional mining on Earth. However, the challenges highlighted, particularly the high cost of space travel, remind us that this vision is still far from reality. Nonetheless, the prospect of humanity expanding its reach beyond our planet's surface is both exciting and thought-provoking.

Emily ploop as far as I know American military even gets to much money they have a surplus of it. And i think a military shouldn’t be a money hoarder. It should be well funded but at just the right amount of money to keep it working well. The rest should be invested in school and NASA. And what not.
