Wee tip, if your in the woods and need to sharpen the chain and don’t have a stump vice. Cut into the top of the stump about an inch or so, this is enough to hold the bar steady enough to sharpen it with two hands

I have one of these for several years and it’s brilliant. A good tip if I can share is to give the the blade 3 passes on each tooth every time you refuel and not wait until the blade is completely dull. It only takes a couple of minutes and it keeps the chain in optimal condition.

Bought one of these with my first Stihl Chain Saw. Worked for about 3 weeks clearing post tornado trees. Used the sharpener numerous times both on my shop and in the field. Actually wore out my first chain on oaks, maples, osage orange, elm trees etc. This tool is well worth the $35 in time savings and chain renewal. This is an excellent video on using the gig. I've been using this sharpener for about 3 months and it's really great. Five things; 1- Use a rag, wood, or plastic in your vice to reduce damage to the bar. You can see the damage done to his bar in the video. 2- Do not sharpen a tooth that is toward the end of the saw as the blade begins to turn the corner because the guide rails will not be at the proper height. 3- I tighten the chain a little so there is less deflection as you push on the tooth and I use the chain brake then cut 3 or 4 teeth before advancing. 4-The chain is typically very sharp when your done and the depth gauge is very aggressively cut. This does create some chattering while cutting as you can see in the video of the chainsaw use. 5- He didn't cover the amount of times he files but for me it depends on the condition of the chain. Usually two passes for light touch up or 5 to 6 if you've hit a rock. Overall an absolutely terrific tool, I can't recommend it enough. Stihl all the way. Great video!!

These files are great. I've got one for each of my saws. Once you get the feel for it, it takes no time to sharpen a chain. A little pricey, but well worth the money instead of using just a single straight file, and another one for the raker. Seriously one of Sthil's better ideas/tools ever.

The 2 in 1 filing guides are awesome tools. I work in bridge maintenance and construction. We cut a lot of dirty nasty materials up to treated 12”x12” timber and also need to cut clean material to replace it with. These tools will quickly bring a chain that is beyond cutting back to life. Thanks Steve watched another video that was doing a review on the device. The person demonstrating the device wasn't familiar as to why the sharpener was set to sharpen at that angle. Your explanation fully explained that when ordering the sharpener the customer needs to refer to their saws cutting bar and then order the device accordingly. For a homeowner that only uses a chainsaw on occasion having someone explain the how's and why's and demonstrate correct way to use the tool invaluable.

Hi Steve, I have three Stihl 2in1 sharpening jigs for all my different saws and they work great. One thing you might mention is to not push down too hard with blunt files as this will cause the jig to flex and take the depth gauges down too far and cause dramas. Love your channel and know that I'll be having a beer with you as I watch your next video.

@@StevesSmallEngineSaloon I've used an Italian made piece of crap that takes me more than half an hour to sharpen a chain and it seems to cut one side of the teeth more than the other side. I don't like that. Not good, as it wants to cut a curve. If I can keep my teeth filed evenly, I'll retire my pizza sharpener, or is it a spaghetti sharpener ? Ha!

@@StevesSmallEngineSaloon Steve, I've been using one of these and it seems to work pretty well. I was using it with a Stihl chain. But, now I bought some Oregon chains. Same sizing and everything. I haven't tried it yet, but, I guess, I should still be able to use the Stihl chain sharpener with a different brand chain? I think on my last Stihl chain I wasn't pressing down hard enough on the flat file that lowers the depth.

Nice video. Very helpful comparison to a new chain. As an occasional chainsaw user, this sharpener worked well for me. I started out just using a round file. The cutting tooth is L shaped and has a vertical and horizontal. I was really great at sharpening the vertical part. The (top) horizontal part was difficult to sharpen consistently as I had to hold the file at exactly the right height without having it roll over the top. The guide bars on this sharpener allow you to get the round file to just the right height and keep it there. It is hard to see the sharpness of the horizontal portion. The angle markings on the square bars are really useful. I'm a bit surprised that you hold the tool flat (90 degrees to the bar) given that the teeth have set (angled to the outside). The set gives you a nice kerf (cut). Since the depth guides are only .025 inch, I'm not sure all my sharpening below that depth with a freehand round file did any good at all.

For the first time since I've been sharpening chains, 35 years, I can resharpen to cut as well as new. I just had a saw I had lent out that they cut rocks with and only a few strokes per tooth brought it back to cutting again. It's fast and easy. Manufactured by Pferd, marketed by Stihl, you can probably pick up up blue Pferd one a few dollars cheaper if you can be bothered or a Chinese one real cheap if you're brave.
