How to know your green beans are ready to harvest - pick them before the beans inside start to swell up and you can clearly see their outline thru the pods. Once the beans start to swell, the pods get fibrous and stringy which is not the best for eating. Harvest frequently to prevent the plants from going to seed. Once they go to seed, green bean pod production starts to decline.

pole beans are actually great for small gardens, growing them vertically frees up more space

Pick them when they're smaller there more tender and more lucious and more pretty and they fry up nice

I love growing both bush and pole beans ❤ I will argue, however, pole beans are great for small spaces. You can grow them vertically and grow more per square foot than you can with bush beans. I do love and grow both types, and multiple varieties of each. This year I’m also trying the yard long beans for the first time 😁

I didn't care for growing bush beans, harder to find the beans on the plants, and being close to the soil, I found they had more issues with disease.

I agree 100% with this. I still grow them though because they make for such awesome companion plants under tomatoes etc...

Will that one bean you left for seeds effect the productivity of the plant going forward?

Yes. If the pods are left on to go to seed it signals to the plant that its at the end of its life cycle. These plants have produced loads and loads by now so I am allowing them to go to seed.
