Lao Tzu teaches the importance of interdependence since life itself is interdependent. Neither dependence nor independence is the way, but balance in the everything in the universe is interconnected and affects everything else. A single action can have a cascading effect throughout the universe. Therefore, the 8 advises us to take life as it is without choice or selection. Although this may seem simple, it is actually quite difficult for the mind that always wants to make choices. To reach the mind without choices, the 8 does not prescribe any meditation. Instead, he recommends that we flow with life, enjoying every moment and without worrying about the past or the future. By living in this way, we find a symphony within our being, where the lowest and the highest meet in harmony. A peak without a valley is poor, just like a valley without a peak. Since each has its own depth and mystery, but when peak and valley are together, a rich possibility is created for life. Then instead of looking for the top or the valley, the path of the leads us to find the richness in the interdependence of everything around us. The tones and the voice interdepend in harmony in front and behind interdepend.
In company, therefore, the wise man handles matters without action. The 8 speaks of an idea called "way," which means that the wise man handles matters without action. There are three possibilities:
The first is to be constantly active and forget about inaction, which makes you a worldly man. The second is to abandon action and retreat to an isolated place like the Himalayas, which makes you an otherworldly man. But the third option is to live in the world and engage in action without letting action control you internally. Act without being active, move without moving, speak and there is silence within you. Act and remain inactive in your center. If you can balance action and inaction, then you will find harmony. You will be a beautiful phenomenon that embraces both beauty and ugliness.
Think of a rose bush. Thorns are not against the flower but protect it. In a harmonious person, nothing is rejected; everything is absorbed and used. If there is one rock in your path, do not reject it; use it as a springboard. Therefore, the wise man handles matters without action but remains in the world. He handles affairs, but his action is external, while inwardly he remains inactive. In the center of the cyclone, he preaches doctrine without words.
Here I am preaching a doctrine without words. You will say that I am using words. Yes, I am preaching without words because deep within me, there is no word. The word is for you, not for me. I use it; it doesn't use me. It doesn't fill me. The moment I'm not talking to you, I'm not talking at all. I never talk to myself. There's no internal conversation. When I'm not speaking, I'm silent, and when I'm speaking, the silence is not disturbed. The silence remains intact.
