Just recently (past approximately 4 months) I have gotten onto NDIS (National Disability Insurance Scheme) it’s based in Australia. NDIS is a company that funds people with significant permanent disabilities to help them become more independent and make their environment more accessible. And in my plan (that I wanted them to give me) say that I have the option to have a occupational therapist. The possible reason they gave me the option to have a occupational therapist is maybe because of my autistic diagnosis. That or it’s because of my inability to emotional regulate.

Thank you, this was really helpful. Im going to look into the first and last specialties. Do you choose a program with a specialty or is that something you do after?

Hi Kristi! Choosing a specialty typically happens after graduating from a program. However, programs do have different focuses so one could be more theory-based vs science-based. If you know the specialty direction you want to go in beforehand, you could look at program outlines and see if it aligns with your interests. Most programs are well-rounded so if things change you'll still be in a really good environment to support your new focus!

Do you know where mental health OTs can be found? What setting are they mainly in?

Hi Laura! These OTS work in a range of settings from child and youth mental health to adult mental health services. Mental Health OTs can be found in settings such as hospitals, working in child, maternity, or in general adult wards.
