I fill my Marine Interstate battery every year. After you top off and put it on the charger, sit by your battery and listen in. You can here the cells charging with subtle popping noises. Cool stuff.

A long haul trucker friend told me a trick they use to extend battery life. Annually, or when you notice your battery losing power, add a 325 grain aspirin tablet to each cell. This desolves the buildup on the plates and renews the cells. In the last year I lost 2 Interstate batteries. One was 9 years old and the other 13.

I have a camper van that I've owned for 4 years and this year my third Interstate deep cycle marine battery! 😱 The battery is not left in the vehicle once the cool weather starts to come it's brought into a garage and it's put on a battery maintainer. Deep cycle marine batteries are very finicky about when and how they are charged! 🤔It would be terrific if you could do a specific video on that subject and Im sure it would help out many!! With all the information that's out there there aren't any specific KZfaq videos on how to properly charge a deep cycle marine battery!! Took it out this year installed it went to the park for one day and couldn't even keep my refrigerator that was running on gas that needs the marine battery as some power is necessary still died! Could not get it to take a charge and hold more than 4 hours so I went and bought another new one! Because the compartments is small I don't have a choice for another battery. Because of the wiring within the vehicle I can't switch over to lithium. Thankfully I was smart enough to purchase a lithium battery and have it inside the vehicle and I use that for running my microwave and many other things with it connected to a inverter... I use it as extra power and it's terrific though it was very expensive! It's an A Ampertime 200 amp hour 12-volt battery that was a little over $1,000! For camper use and being off the road for a number of hours or days it was the best investment! The link you posted below for someone asking about the water level is helpful for that and other reasons. It's got a lot of information within it although I am pretty upset with Interstate Batteries Not lasting and I am following all the recommendations! 🤔 I'm going to repost here the link you gave to the other person because it is very helpful. www.usbattery.com/care-and-maintenance/

Thanks for the great comment! You are right, they can be finicky charging and maintaining. And you are double right about the expense of lithium. I wonder if being "maintained" for the entire off-season is hurting yours? Most chargers have a maintenance mode that is hold a 95 to 100% charge. Select charges can be set to 75% which is better for storage. Might be something to try.

Hi Brian, would you recommend using a marine deep cycle battery on a newport NT300 motor?
@BrianGaberFishing
@BrianGaberFishing Ай бұрын
You could. Those motors will go 5.5 mph and will use 23% of a 100 amp hour battery (36volt system) in an hour. The conditions (wind/waves) will affect those results. But if you have a 36 volt system and some amp hours, it should work just like the deep cycles that have powered all the trolling motors before the lithium batteries came online.

Saw a viedo where they kinda refurbished a battery by adding water and hooking it up to a high-powered charger and boiling the corrosion off.

Interesting. Did you see the comment below about aspirin?
@djl8841
@djl8841 20 күн бұрын
Don't do that. You will only cause more off gassing. If the hydrated cells won't charge, either your charger has a low voltage cut off, or your battery is just that worn out, or you have an improper mixture of electrolyte. Could be grounded out retaining walls between the cells from warping due to excess heat. If this is the case your battery will hold weird voltages based on how many cells are within. For example a car battery holding 10vdc after a charge is a 12 plate 1v cell grouping. With 2 plates grounded, it bypasses those cells only outputting 10 volts. Do not use this battery. There are some higher end chargers that will refurbish a battery with a proper charging cycle. But, it's probably best to get new batteries and take better care of them. Best of luck.

Its sheding sulfates into the electrolite turning the acid into water releasing electrons, there is no such thing as a 3 to 1 ratio of the solution. Thats the specific gravity of the acid depending on it's current charge. You are giving advice about chemical equations you dont fully understand. You gave somemgood advice about temperature and basics. But how do you even mauntain your 3 to 1 ratio if you don't even mention a hydrometer to measure the specific gravity of the electeolite. Hydrogen gasses off from the water and evaporates, usually only requiring adding DI-water to maintain the proper level. Recharging the battery will use the H2O with the charge equation turning it back into acid while absorbing electrons and the sulfates back into the plates.

Thanks for the feedback Ken. Beyond some lead acid basics and maintenance, I was recognizing that they still are a decent option for dependability. At the time of the video they were very reasonably priced compared to some of the more popular expensive options that are coming online.
