Thanks Philip, i watched this morning before i went out to play in or Sunday comp. 36pts 16hcap 64yrs. Played with 2 others single figures, they were So Impreseed with my Relaxed fluid Easy swing. It is hard to keep a soft light swing but hey i did it. My short game needs some work otherwise i would have had 42pts.

Hi Philip, I admire your ability to create such speed with so little apparent effort. My guess is that it has a lot to do with your timing. My other guess is that your timing would be good even if you swung like Jon Rahm. Us mortals who struggle with their timing do not get 'automatic' good shots just by being relaxed. You can compare it to the throwing motion. Some people just cannot throw a ball, even if they are completely relaxed. Long story, but my point is, Philip, I think the Easiest Swing suits you, because your swing already ticks a lot of other boxes, in timing and sequencing. That doesn't necessarily mean that we wil achieve the same result by taking the same step. Regards, Joost

Maybe you are right Joost however we have thousands of golfers of every standard who find that as they reduce tension they find more clubhead speed and effortless power.

Hi Philip, thanks for the tips. I am wondering though if the swing advice from the early years wasn`t influenced by the fact that they were swinging irons with hickory shafts and real woods. Not saying that they cannot be applied in our days, as the easiest swing is a perfect testimony of that, but that some of the modern concepts take advantage of the new technologies in golf club design?

That is a great question and no doubt there is a great deal of validity in the fact that playing with all the torque in hickory influenced the things they found that worked, but consider this related to driving a car, technology in modern cars keeps us safe, in old fashioned cars bad driving would lead to accidents which todays cars prevent, but bad driving. is bad driving and even with the technology isn’t a good driver still better in a modern car? In other words the new technology in clubs and balls is very forgiving which maybe let’s us make more mistakes than that old equipment and we “get away with it” but in this whole process maybe we lose something? I used to have a great sense of direction until sat nav came along - today I know I have lost that (ask my wife!!). One final analogy if you wanted to learn good balance would you ask someone who can walk along a 10 foot wide footpath without falling over or a tight rope walker? I truly believe those old masters and shotmakers knew things that modern golf has forgotten but I’m certain we can still learn from their advice. Thanks for a great question and hope that all makes sense.👍

Philip. Yes how many times have I heard this. That you must be relaxed when swinging the club. I know it works as i have had my best rounds doing it. But I still find it extremely hard to relax when addressing the ball. Take the ball away and hey presto I’m swinging good .. Put the ball back ready to hit and that’s when the muscles tighten up. G&T before a round helps a bit 😂

Don’t despair Rod, I have been playing for 55 years and off scratch for the last 40 and I’m still finding I can relax more and get better results. Relaxing in the swing is less a switch (on or off) and more of a dial, just keep adjusting the dial and see where it leads!!

When you think about it golf clubs, especially irons, are designed to open and close their faces naturally. That's why the shaft is on the back end of the club head and not centre-shafted like a putter. This will, IF YOU LET IT, open and close the club face as you swing. So, anything that disrupts this WILL stop the natural positioning of the face throughout the swing and require you to compensate. Of course, you may need to find, or be measured by a club fitter for, a set made to suit your individual swing. Bill said to use all your muscles and joints by keeping them loose not stationary. He said he believed in bending his left elbow in the backswing as keeping it straight locks the joint and is unnatural. He was an advocate of the great Harry Vardon who bent his left elbow almost to 90 degrees. It is MUCH easier to swing and less stressful if you use a bent left elbow.

Spot on Kenny, Bill also said clubs are made to square themselves naturally at impact. As you say it’s only when we interfere with that swinging motion that it doesn’t work. Most golfers never allow this to happen. I love his quote “if you don’t interfere with the swinging of the clubhead, every ball will go straight” there is so much depth to that statement you need to read and remember it over and over. 👍👍

Melhorn's "grass whip" drill teaches the same to and fro style of pivot as the "danse du golf" drill. That's the key to the whole thing.

Victor East sent six weed cutters to both Harvey Penick and Wild Bill Melhorn. After a few weeks, Melhorn sent his weed cutters back to Victor East with a note stating, "These things are ruining my business. Students who use them don't need me anymore"

Hi Philip I had a day’s lesson and some one to one with Brian,RIP, it was great to have met him.I am having lessons with the pro from my golf club and my right wrist is hurting as I am holding the arms straight in the back swing and trying to hit down on the ball.do you have any suggestions for me as I am 74 years young.thank you.

This is a great question Richard and I’m so glad you were lucky enough to have had some coaching with Brian. I won’t comment on what your coach is telling you, but maybe something I’m working on personally may throw some light on the topic. For many years I strived for width and coil which contributed to many aches and pains, then about 5 years ago I broke my left wrist (both bones) and had to have it reset and plated with 5 screws. When I had recovered Brian looked at my swing as it was hurting around impact he asked me to swing with zero tension into the ball and through. I was astonished to see I could clip the ball away painlessly and surprisingly no loss of distance whatsoever!! Recently in an effort to reduce tension in my wrists at the top of the backswing and especially at impact I have been “allowing” myself to do the opposite to you, allowing my wrists to hinge more and even let my lead arm bend. The result a softer, easier, more controllable action. It feels ridiculous to me but when I see the results it looks so much more relaxed! I hope that perhaps gives you a lead. Maybe consider joining our Easiest Swing Club so we can help you more with your progress.

I have been watching your videos for a couple of months and tried to incorporate it into my swing. I am interested in getting your thoughts on traditional swing aspects such as body tilt, swing plane and sequencing? Do those things not matter or do you rely on golfers knowing these from past experience. I have had some success and enjoy the benefits of an effortless swing and I guess ideally tension free golf relies on not thinking about those things?

Thanks for posing this interesting comment. When you pick up an axe, a hammer or a knife and fork do you think of any of those things? No, your body just conforms itself to whatever the task is in the most natural and efficient way. Why should a golf club be any different? The only reason golfers start to examine these things is because of rules such as head still, lead arm straight, lead heel stuck to the floor and several other “rules” people give you, that remove your natural ability to do it easily. Keep following Easiest Swing and you will discover your own “Authentic Swing” without having to be encumbered by anything unnatural. We won’t tell you how to swing, just help you to do it in an unrestricted way. If you really want to accelerate your learning (and with our help) consider joining our Easiest Swing Club.

We have spoken with the author’s (Bobby Shave) family to see if we could get copies of the book or get it republished but sadly he now has dementia and they don’t seem to want to get it published and the publisher also no longer exists. Copyright laws don’t allow us to do as you suggest but we can share the information and intend to do so. We also share more of it in the Easiest Swing Club so maybe consider joining us there.

What would be an ideal weight shaft for tis system ? Seems like a heavier club would be better with this technique ...common belief is as you get older you go lighter but there is no momentum ..I went lighter but lost control ..105 gram shaft a happy medium ?

A 105 gram shaft is extremely heavy. Ideally we want a lighter shaft and a heavier head. This helps with feel and rhythm. I have just got new clubs myself this week and I have the 65gm recoil shafts - they feel great!

I am always looking to increase my turn - I have 4 fused vertebrae in my cervical spine. I don’t think I can ever get as much as I’d like but by working on my left knee and foot action , allowing my head to move and relaxing my left arm I can get close to where I’d like to be. However without those elements I think I’d lose 50 yards off the tee and I don’t think I’d even be able to break 80 any more!

Bill Mehlhorn wrote a book with Bobby Shave - Golf Secrets Exposed. Mr. Mehlhorn also coached the golf team at Florida International University in Miami towards the end of his life.

That’s right, sadly it’s no longer in print. We spoke to Bobby’s daughter to see if we could resurrect it (sadly Bobby has dementia now) but she said she couldn’t face that, I guess her hands are full right now and she probably gets regular similar requests. The original publisher is out of business too. It’s why I used many of his quotes in our new book “The Easiest Swing in Golf” (available on Kindle now with physical copies due in a couple of weeks) as there is so much treasure in that book.

@@Easiestswing I learned to play golf at a golf course in Miami where Mr. Shave was the maintenance superintendent. The golf pro was Ken Juhn whom Mr. Shave and Mehlhorn coached at FIU. The course sadly no longer exist. The last time I saw Mr. Shave was at a course in Hollywood, FL about 15 years ago. I actually have a signed copy of that book. I learned golf with the “cut the grass” drill. At one point Mr. Shave was selling a golf aid for that drill. Harvey Penick also described the tool in the Little Red Book.

No we recommend a 50/50 set up and allowing almost all the weight to travel to the back foot through the backswing. Now I need to go and check I’m doing what I recommend!! 😂

If you always swing at 2/3power, how do get more distance?

Great question @sumitagg1 the longest hitters will lose some yards but gain accuracy and consistency doing this. However, we often find shorter hitters gain distance due to the removal of unnecessary effort. We call this effortless power rather than powerless effort. 👍
