Today's episode is a pretty big deal. It's got massive implications. It brings up some big questions. It's about things that are bigger than... other things. Like pedals. Pedals that are very large for unknown reasons. In the comments tell me what you think about Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness and your favorite BIG album.

Got a question for you. Can a fully analog pedal do digital presets inside of the pedal? So just Analog but have like 10-whatever presets that are saved on that pedal digitally. Thanks if you have time to answer the question. =D

It's common knowledge to people "in the know" that people had much larger feet in the 70's. Just look at those "keep on truckin'" shirts that were so popular. The 80's came and all the cocaine shrunk our feet back to normal size. The history channel did a show on this, you must have missed it.

Ever since his craft became a legitimate business, he can write off pedal purchases in his tax. He can also use company money to buy them, throuth which he can write off further tax. Can you imagine?? Imagine having the G.A.S. you currently have, and then having a little backyard business you started go big...and then, not only will you G..A.S. spending sprees go unquestioned, but it will pretty much be expected - from a business standpoint!! Here's an idea: in the mode of Willy Wonka, you place golden tickets in the enclosures of five JHS pedals. The purchasers of those pedals get to come to JHS headquarters for a tour. This would make for a great episode, especially if you can figure out a way to turn one of the winners into a giant human blueberry (but I'll leave that to your discretion).

If you check Spring King inside photos you will realize that it could be half of the size or even less. Yes, tank is long so pedal is wide but just like Lays chips most of the pedal is just air. I've heard people joke that old NYC muffs wasted space gives it more headroom, maybe Danelectro decided to do the same? Jokes aside they probably decided to reuse their Reel Echo enclosure. Own and love those clunky twins.

Definitely my favorite is Double Nickles on the Dime by the Minutemen. Double album with 43 tracks, all but two of which have a runtime of under two and a half minutes. The story goes they were in the studio and heard that Husker Du were putting out a double album, so they decided they would do one too. It's killer, has more incredible songs than most bands put out in their entire career, and has inspired countless musicians in the 35 years since. That includes me.

My favorite BIG album has to be Consequences by Godley & Creme. They somehow talked Mercury Records into releasing a 3 lp concept album about a composer whose compositional skills were so powerful, they controlled the weather. The album was allegedly a concept album, but I believe it was actually a 3 lp demo record for their Gizmotron guitar bowing device. Very strange and wonderful album. The Boss CE-1 is also somewhat on the large side. I had one go at fitting mine on my pedalboard, then immediately gave up and bought a CE-2w. The benefit of the big graphic EQ sliders is that you get much better quality sliders, with greater ease of adjustment for getting your tone just right. It's why 100mm faders on mixing desks are preferred to 60mm ones. Nice video BTW.

Favorite "big" album is Zaireeka by The Flaming Lips. It consists of four separate discs, all to be played at the same time on different stereo systems. Unnecessarily big, but also super freaking cool.

Awesome record time again. Big part of my youth right there. It and the wall are the main reason why my next album is going to be a double album. Previous album was a more acoustic album (also something I always wanted to do), and so the next one will be the double. I know everybody just releases singles these days but the double album needs to come back.

I think the original Univibes was large out of necessity... Their predecessors, the Psychadelic Machine (by Honey, then Shin Ei) were so big, they had to make it a stand alone unit that went on top of your amp. If you’ve never seen one, check them out here on KZfaq. It’s a superb vibe and a pretty gnarly fuzz in one box.

You gotta love an unapologetic gear nerd. Encyclopedia of technical information who also obsesses about weird backstory and bizarre design choices that were made to come up with now iconic pedals. I love the admiration of other makers who technically are the competition but in reality are just buddies who exchange ideas and inspiration.

I know this is out of place here but it has to do with Spring Reverb Tanks in pedals or amps. OMG the old Grey Tuck & Roll Kustom 100 Watt SS Combo Amp had a massive and equally noisie Reverb Tank that was so sensitive that it would sound like it was exploding or thunder & lightning strike if you just tapped the amp. That amp ruined a lot of recordings, so I quit using the amps Reverb Tank and started using reverb tanks and reverb effects pedals outside the amp. I finally took the Kustom Reverb Tanks out of the amp and made my own patch to the unit and a patch switch box and put the reverb tank in a box and suspended it within the box using recording mic shock mounts. Then a playing buddy blew the cones out of the front of the face grill literally. I traded the amp for a Fender 65' Twin Reverb and a C Note ! ! ! Effects from yesteryears ??? WoW, that's a lots of Big Gear ago & now I gotta use readers to find my gear and settings and be careful that I don't stomp my boxes to death ! ! ! 😁 Peace & Play On . . . 🎸 😎 DDH 10-3-2019

Bear in mind that, in the '60s and '70s, a "pedalboard" was likely to consist of maybe 3 or 4 pedals, sitting on the floor. The need for compactness didn't really emerge until the late '80s as people started to actually *have* pedalboards with a dozen or more devices needing to fit in a defined space, rather than sprawled out on a rug. Also worth noting that, while 1/4W resistors and DIP op-amps have not changed size in 50 years, electrolytic caps have shrunk dramatically during that period, as have pots. A 10uf/16V cap from 1968 is about the size of a 470uf/63V unit from today. That played a role in obliging big enclosures. Many of the early MXR pedals used tantalum caps. Why? Because you could easily lie them on their side, such that they could fit in a small chassis that wasn't so tall to accommodate electros standing up tall.

Back in the early Eighties, pedals cost just about what they run now, but the money wasn't quite as cheap. Robbie Dunbar and Joe Satriani were the only guys I ever knew who could afford more than one. Joe had three little Boss pedals running on batteries, but he was doing all that madman stuff so it didn't seem excessive.
@markhammer643
@markhammer643 4 жыл бұрын
@@hoboroadie Indeed, a great many pedals lacked any sort of jack for being externally powered. Just today, I saw an ad for a Proco Rat 2, in which the seller made clear he was including a dongle to connect an external supply up to the 9V battery snap inside.
@markhammer643
@markhammer643 4 жыл бұрын
@@Aleph_Null_Audio Also quite true. Certainly the availability of small enclosures has been a boon to reducing pedal size, but those smaller enclosures could only have uptake because so many other factors - smaller caps, pots, switches, and double-sided boards - made smaller effects possible. And once surface-mount became available, things shrunk even further.

I would like to see an episode where you go more into technical details, component level etc. Maybe you could disassemble one of this huge pedals and show us why they are sound like they sound... or not. You say this one specific chorus brought you the idea of making your own version... maybe you could show us your attempt to "recreate" a curtain pedal. Oh, and as always, great video and if i have to suggest you an album then i would suggest you "Died Laughing" from (Keith) Mina Caputo... great vocals, great guitars, gigantic good songs.
