I spent four days and three nights on a solo backpacking trip in Isle Royale National Park in early June. In this video, I go over the gear I brought with me, sharing what worked and what didn't (spoiler: most of it worked).
Some of my favorites: AeroPress, Atom Packs backpack, Enlightened Equipment quilt, MSR pocket rocket stove, and Patagonia puffer jacket!
Isle Royale can be unpredictable in the early summer. I packed for a range of temperatures and weather conditions. Happy to answer any questions!
Disclaimer: I am still new to backpacking and camping, and I am figuring out what works best for me - it is always a work in progress. Backpacking gear will be different for everyone depending on how you hike/camp, and I'd recommend you look to many sources as you research and plan for your trip.

I'm hoping to talk my wife into taking this adventure with me next summer. Your laid back video will definitely be an aid in hopefully convincing her to go. Great Job

I enjoyed all three of your videos! We are planning a trip to Isle Royale next summer with our two kids who will be 8 and 10 at the time. I was so glad that you finally saw a moose. Loved learning about the gear rental and your wardrobe! We are hoping for similar weather and moose sightings as well!

Very interesting. Although I'm an old codger, and my backpacking days are over, it was interesting to see the newer gear. My main backpack has an aluminum frame and is literally 46 years old. I stay at the lodge now or camp by boat. I would suggest you take a good survival knife along. GLOCK makes one with a 6 inch blade that has the top of the blade serrated so it works as a saw. Very good quality, I think I paid $30 for mine. Thanks for posting!

I took a hammock/bug net/rain fly system AND a tent 54 miles across the island. I could have saved myself almost 5 lbs of pack weight by only bringing the tent!

I am assuming you brought TP or Wipes? And do all the campgrounds have enclosed toilets? planning for hopefully soon. BTW - great trip, thanks for sharing so much and for the gear breakdown. I am hoping to get shelters but will be sure to have a tent if needed

I brought both. All campsites do have outhouses, which is a plus! I hope you have a great time when you go!

@@mikhailalynn I'm planning on going back to Isle Royale National Park for the sixth year in a row. I haven't been to Lane Cove or the far northeast section of the Greenstone Ridge Trail yet. I'm going to take a water taxi to Duncan Narrows and backpack to Lane Cove. I'm also planning on backpacking the full length of the Minong Ridge Trail for the first time since 2018. Last year I started at Malone Bay after the Voyageur ferry boat dropped me off at the dock and got Malone Bay and the Ishpeming Trail ticked off my Isle Royale National Park bucket list. Are you planning on going back to IRNP soon?

@@mikhailalynn The western section of Isle Royale, the Feldtmann Lake loop, and the Minong Ridge Trail are quite different from the trails that you hiked. Todd Harbor on the northern shore is famous for its sunset views. Last year I had the Voyager ferry boat drop off half of my food at the McCargoe Cove dock, so that I could keep my backpack weight under 28lbs. I sent them half of my 12 day food supply to their office in Grand Portage, MN. I have a Nemo Hornet 2P tent (2lbs. 6 oz), a Nemo Tensor air mattress and a ZPacks Ultra backpack and ZPacks sleeping bag to help keep the weight down I usually get their around the 3rd or 4th week of August, when the mosquitoes and black flies are gone. That's usually one of the best times for viewing the northern lights.

You make my back hurt. You need a shake down. Too many doubles of things and unneeded stuff. But thanks for your videos, I am heading to Isle Royal in August came across your videos looking more into it. Good luck on your future hiking adventures.

Do you think a headnet is needed for keeping bugs away?
@mikhailalynn

When I visited it was early June and bugs weren’t too bad except in a few spots - all I needed was bug spray. I have heard it is much worse in July and August

What company did you use to rent the garmin safety beacon?
@mikhailalynn

Outdoor Equipment Rentals. I’ve rented through them twice now, and it worked seamlessly both times. I gave myself a few days of buffer before and after the trip. I just bought my own inReach mini 2 this past Black Friday for future trips.
