Unpacking terms: Communicative Competence

Simplified explanation, summary, and discussion of the concept of "communicative competence." What are its components? And what implications does it have for language teaching?
To learn more, I recommend the book by Sandra Savignon "Communicative Competence: Theory and Classroom Practice," as well as Canale & Swain's article "Theoretical bases of communicative approaches to second language teaching and testing" (academic.oup.com/applij/artic...)

I find it interesting that the four elements of communicative competence include grammar, but not lexical competence. Is this to do with the preoccupations of researchers of that time? Perhaps the first of those four competences could be lexicogrammar rather than grammar?

Grammatical competence includes everything that has to do with language. It's not "grammar" in the traditional (or pedagogical) sense. Pronunciation, for instance, is part of grammatical competence. Personally, I would prefer to call it "linguistic competence".
