Both the Broncos and the Panthers were architects of their own fate. For me it was a battle of two scrum halves. One made all the right moves in the final twenty whilst the other made all of the wrong ones. Cleary deserves heaps of praise. But Adam Reynolds had to know that with a massive lead and twenty minutes to go the one thing he couldn't allow was for the ball to stay in play for long periods. It had been a long day. His bigger forward pack would undoubtedly start to gas if the game sped up. Kick the ball to touch, man! Play for the scrum. Manage your forward pack's energy reserves and allow them to get some air back into their lungs. And where the hell was he on that blown fifth tackle option when the Broncos had an opportunity to put the ball into the in-goal for a repeat set and instead they ran it - which instantly gave possession back to a Penrith side which had the bit between its teeth. I wouldn't mind but Reynolds is one of the best exponents of kicking for repeat sets in the game! If Cleary's 40-20 was the turning point this blunder was the nail in the coffin for the Broncos. Another six and they could have snatched their breath and probably defended out the game. I wouldn't mind but it was for the precise reason of having an experienced half-back for big-game situations that the Broncos spent big on his contract! It also highlights a critical weakness in the Broncos moving forward because whilst Ezra played exceptionally well - neither he nor Walsh had anything to offer when Reynolds' game management skills and tactical kicking went AWOL. Understand, I'm not taking anything away from Penrith. They played great and Cleary deserves all of the plaudits. But this game was BLOWN by incomprehensibly bad tactical play as much it was won by outstanding football on the opposite side. The Broncos were badly let down by their key decision-makers when the game got big. They failed to manage their energy reserves and instead allowed themelves to get into a stamina battle which they were ALWAYS going to lose against Penrith. Kick the damned ball! Move your team from scrum to scrum. Do whatever you have to do to slow the game down and that game is won. Regardless, I think they are going to have to find a kicking number nine for next season to prevent this eventuality ocurring again. Because they can't allow tactical responsibility to all fall squarely on Reynolds' shoulders again.
@footyfin
@footyfin 10 ай бұрын
Well said, and I agree with all of that (except that PP played "outstanding football"). I was surprised that Reynolds didn't manage it better or make different decisions; that's disappointing. As for all those short dropouts 😏 ... that must've been their game plan.

Agree with all that, I can’t really understand how Reynolds didn’t take control when they had the lead, especially when they wasted that 5th tackle without a drop into goal repeat set. It just seemed like in the moments when the broncos needed him to step up (or Walsh), they were nowhere to be found. Cleary was amazing but let’s be honest also, broncos kept giving them every chance to get back into the game in the last 20. It was almost like the way they choked last season and missed finals, it just comes out of nowhere.

I highly disagree they failed to manage their energy reserves. That kick out on the full in the first half was intentional for that exact reason, he saw the line and knew they couldn't defend it. They put so much pressure on themselves with their error rate, they were hitting the wall just before the 60 from defending (and brilliantly I might add) so well. You can only mitigate your risk so much. Unfortunately they saved their most error riddled game of the season until last, and that's what cost them

Definitely gutted. But on a positive side, you had a Broncos side that went up against a team with a 97% completion rate and has played in four grand finals in a row, two of which they won, and the Broncos still lost by only one penalty goal in the last three minutes of the game. How many times this year has the broncos stopped playing at 60/70 min mark to many times Cleary done what most champion halves have to do and lead his team for the 80 minutes players like edwards, Crichton , front-rowers don’t get the credit they deserve as well as the rest of team, broncos didn’t respect the ball or the panthers from the start and they got run down by a more committed team that are almost like brothers the way they look at for each other. Well done panthers, broncos hope they learn that playing for 80 minutes is the name of the game hold the ball complete and trust who ever is on the field with you

I think Brisbane scoring 3 tries so quick hurt them in the end. Panthers were in there normal grind. They did it all first half and I think they would have done it all 2nd half until the 3 quick tries. Cleary and the team know they can't win doing the grind and play an attacking style. If Mam only scores one try do Penrith just stay in grind mode. If Mam scores them later in the game Penrith don't have the time to adjust.

The refereeing was not good, in many aspects it was. However there were quite a few things the broncos should of been penalised for & a couple where penrith could of been, to give away an extremely soft penalty was the ultimate of inconsistency. That penalty turned the game & without penrith would of scored at least once in the final 10 minutes of the first half also the broncos 1st try should never of been considered he was short no way that ball got near the line.

Nobody wants to talk about 2 things which I think changed the game late in the 2nd half when the Broncos were still in front: 1) The Reece Walsh supposed tackled in goal which forced a goal line drop out. Walsh was tackled ! Full Stop. He was on the ground with ball and body in the field of play. He didn't get up! That wasn't a goal line drop out but play on Broncos! 2) The referee awarding the 1 and only 'ruck infringement ' which led to a 6 again to the qpanthers and in that set Cleary scores the winning try! 1 ruck infringement in 80 minutes! Come on! and who gets the 6 again? Panthers inside the Broncos 10 metre with 4 minutes on the clock! Total rubbish

Come on get real and it was given to the Panthers 4 minutes from full time and Cleary scores the winning try. What about all the other ruck infringements that were let go by the referee? What about the crusher, high shots, inside 10 metres that were all let go by the referee.
