The Su-33 (Су-33) Flanker D was Russia's first conventional fixed-wing Navy aircraft designed to operate from the Admiral Kuznetsov, the only Carrier in the Russian Navy's arsenal. During the prototype stage, its designation was the Su-27K, because of its linked lineage to the Su-27 Flanker. During that time, there was a proposed and built two-seater prototype called the Su-27KUB that resembled very closely to the Su-34, but that project was ultimately rejected by the Navy. There was a Su-33 prototype that China had acquired from Ukraine that led to the development of the J-15 (歼15), but it was not technically built under license contract from Russia, so when they put in an order for some more Su-33s, Russia denied it due to a break in their agreements. To this day, the only combat the Naval Flanker has seen is in the Syrian Civil War in 2015, operating from the Kuznetsov. In 2009, the Navy put in an order for the MiG-29K as a cheaper and mass producible fighter to replace the aging Sukhoi. As of today, there are 18 Su-33s and 24 MiG-29Ks in the Russian Navy Fleet.
