if you notice some differences with lighting and effects in editor and the build version, its because the build version rendered using webgl instead of dx or vulkan

Thanks for the test. What stopped me from going further on this path is, the package it generates for such a small scene is actually over 500 megabytes. It will be impossible for your web visitors to download because it's a webpage. But if people know they are downloading an exe, they will be more patient.

A static welcome page that greets the visitors while the rest of the web page (the actual game) is downloading in the background via code splitting.

Not long ago, if you wanted to play a really nice flash game, you waited the 40MB at 500kB/s without hesitation... I guess this is today's version of that, for a fun game, I'd gladly wait a bit till it's downloaded :p

have you tried inserting video? Just stucked with that for some product visualization and switched to playcanvas, written in javascript and very light

All of the games I've released have been using ue4's html platform. I found that it's best for small experiences with simple presentation, such as low poly aesthetics or 2d, as the file size can balloon quickly. Big shame it is discontinued.

i wonder how the team at Unreal Engine is going to start using WebGPU. WebGPU is in all browsers behind a feature flag. It will also mean the same webgpu can be used for native ( ios, desktop etc).

Damn it, since 4.24 they moved out. Now you have to build the engine from source! A lot more steps than before

hello! thanks for the video. have you heard about pixel streaming from UE ? and what is the difference between packaging a project as html5 and pixel streaming of a project? they are both connected with deployment on the web , thank you kind regards

Pixel Streaming will inevitablly have some latency when you operate and the server must be powerful enough to support multiple clients.

I just learned about webGPU late Thursday night. Could this mean hypothetically we could full fledged games running on web browsers in the future? In my opinion it be kind of cool if we could instantly play games without downloading them akin to cloud gaming but instead of streaming they’re running natively! I don’t know it’s any of that is actually possible but it’s interesting technology none the less!

You will still need to download all the assets to the disk, only difference is it will be deleted when you close the browser and need to download the entire game again when you restart it.

So I followed your tutorial and another one with Ue4,27 HTML5 plugin and right now all seems to work great like my Engine export HMTL5 project and packaging makes 0 errors. The only problem is that when I try my game locally it gets stuck on "Launching engine.." forever. Do you know how to fix that?

Worth noting that you're testing on an RTX 2060 with scenes that don't seem GPU intensive.

But with webgl you can try to mix what unreal doesn't have and what natively webgl doesn't have and ten try to use three js for things like render certain parts for better optimization

Stick with Threejs, it was built specifically for the web and Unreal Engine is hot garbage. If you really want a web-friendly game engine that produces a lightweight payload so people will actually play your game and won't be turned off by download size, look at Godot or Construct 2.

@@gamechannel1271 you can get initial download sizes to under 15mb, then it's all just about your content, the content can be downloaded in the background after it starts as needed.

I am thinking of reducing html files size with Unreal. Using Unreal is much much quicker than coding everything in visual studio code. But Unreal has some required files which takes time to download.

what if dedicated server is used to take all the load of size of the html5 package file, first of all is it at all feasible to use dedicated server for html5, does it make sense at all? please let me know. I am struggling with problem as well. Thanks

@@somethingnew9656 I am afraid that you still need to download files to your cell phone even you use dedicated server. Dedicated server IMO is great for reducing lagging and making downloading/uploading smoothly. But it probably will not reduce required data that needs to be loaded in your browser. Our last project used visual studio code and three.js instead of unreal. We probably are gonna try unity for future projects since unreal has stopped html support for future release. Hope this helps.

Hi Red Stapler. A couple of things: this functionality has been here for some time in UE4. In theory it's very cool, in practice its unusable except for demo. If you look at 1:09, one of the reason is quite visible: 600MB+ of data to load. In addition, like for a mobile project, UE4 has several limitations that you have to be aware of (eg number of lights, polygons etc). So once again, in theory great, in practice unusable. From memory, Unity is doing a better job on both mobile and web (And I am saying that while being a UE4 fan).

@@somethingnew9656 well it doesn't really matter. The two issues you will be facing are: 1) browser don't have UE4 code, so to launch a UE4 program, a user need to download that library on the client side so that your browser understand UE4 code; UE team has made large progress in improving this but as they can not reprogram everything, they rely on an interpreter, so it's a lot to load; a dedicated server would just help to improve download time on the user side; 2) as the code has to be interpreted, you have a bunch of loading time. Don't get me wrong: it usually works and it's great to see a UE4 code working on a browser (in my time, a lot of crash/bug/limitations though), but it does take a long time to load. It depends if your users are willing to wait that amount of time or not.

In order to eliminate download times and in order to enable to play high end apps on any device, you should check out Unreal Engine Pixel Streaming solution.

I have a new installation of UE5 but there is no Package Project option in the File menu, and so no way to build as HTML.

Yeah, they removed html5, but you can use pixel streaming to run a game in a browser.

Yes, Unity outputs to WebGL. It's pretty robust.
