We keep getting closer to realism. It’s still the wonky gravity and physics that make it feel off. Also the dust clouds disperse in a second instead of hovering or building up the more dust is kicked. It just plumes then immediately disappears. I’m being nit picky of course, but just pointing out that which subconsciously holds back the realism for me.
@Overcrox
@Overcrox 3 жыл бұрын
I agree. Hopefully as this gen matures, or in the next gen, we'll see those finer details get brought up to speed. Once texture realism is close enough it'll offer diminishing returns compared to other possible improvements, and I think the other bits will get prioritized. RTX has already helped revolutionize lighting which helped a lot in making things look more real. Kinda like how characters look closer and closer to reality, but they still need to shake that silicon-face look if they're going to be truly believable.
@poiumty
@poiumty 3 жыл бұрын
The biggest uncanny valley is still the lighting. Everything's a bit too colorful to be real. Of course that's a stylistic choice, but I've seen mods for racing games that tone down the lighting and add a more natural tone to it that it makes it so I can't distinguish whether a screenshot of it is real or not. Figuring out realistic lighting that doesn't tank your hardware will be the next big step towards photorealism. RTX is just the beginning.
@30secondstomarsMBH
@30secondstomarsMBH 3 жыл бұрын
@@poiumty This. The longer demo breakdown they did was beautiful, except the lighting in the scene was too bright. It doesn't feel warm like sunlight. It felt like artificial light. Coupled with what RiderZero says about the physics and gravity.....it's close, but not quite there. Which is kinda weird. Coz they were talking about how character models can react to things in real time, much better, reacting to environments, but the movement didn't feel natural. I think the first step is creating photo-realistic environments because that's that majority of what you'll see on screen. You could have a really realistic character, but if the environment looks fake it'll take you out of it. THEN once that's pretty much sorted, and everything is pretty realistic; weather, environments, buildings etc.....then you can build systems that allow the character models to better respond to that. Next step generally after environments tho, is to be able to build a natural skeleton and muscle structure inside character models. I think that's what's holding them back, is that in essence, it needs to be built from the ground up with natural muscles and skeletons and THEN put the skin on top. That way it's a virtual body, instead of a virtual character. So, you build the body before you put the skin on, which then reacts in the same way a normal person would. If they poured all their knowledge of how to make environments naturally react, into making muscles and bones and joints, and worked with medical professionals, we'd have natural movement. Then you work on the lighting, work a bit on particles, coz like someone said certain things feel off.......we're looking at photo-realsitic, natural looking games.
@kennys4100
@kennys4100 3 жыл бұрын
To produce what feels natural is the key, or in other words, to trick our brain to think it’s real. To achieve realism though, is hard, because the world is essentially not made of polygons. Take a close look at our hands and one hand would be hundreds of thousands of polygons, all organic shapes are.

@@adawgnamedcat The new GoW just copy pasted the TLOU formula. It's even more restrictive than the original series. Lack of jumping, platforming - everything felt so scripted and "on the rails". Invisible walls everywhere. New enemies I've encountered on the way were just reskins of the old ones with no significant alterations required for the way I've played. RPG elements felt like they didn't bring anything to the table. Weapon variety was also limited. I'd take games like Returnal over GoW any day.

@@vxvxcvxcvcvxc dude, change your mindset asap or leave this industry. Not every game has to (or can) be innovative, we just need good games. Returnal is a mixed bag of things, just like GoW. What set these games apart from others is how polished they are, and how good the unique story written to that game is, that's why Sony's exclusives work, they are polished and the story is great. There is not much room for innovation these days, just a way to mix things that work.

No doubt UE5 is amazing. But one thing that does need tweaking is player model movement. It needs to be fine tuned on behavior when climbing stairs or covering terrains. Most games in the past have added player model behavior to structures in the past. In this Demo while player is firmly and aptly planted on the ground and movements are correct but as approaching those small steps you can see inaccuracy of going over them. Some Inaccuracies are visible when vaulting over too. Some might say its nitpicking some may ignore this too but when paying attention to visuals can be so good working on player behavior is also something positive.

I just thought that the lack of dust that goes up when something collapses gets bad, when the big boss falls, the dust should stay much longer to appear more realistic.

Idk... I'm not sure if I was really impressed with this demo. It looks freaking amazing overall but I think the minor details I expected were not there at all and I understand this is way early in the life of unreal engine 5 but if it's going to be considered a demo then there are some high expectations coming from an already spectacular unreal engine 4. I was hoping for real time liquid effects to come spewing out of the robot's head once he had fallen. I was also hoping for particle destruction on the ground as the robot's laser hit the ground but I did not see that and it looked more like an outdated but highly polished game. Once again I understand this is just a demo and it's way early on but big expectations are in place

It's procedural animation. Devs animate the character walking straight, then program the IK, and now the character steps adapt to any surface automatically.

Imo this kind of demo is pretty useless if you dont know what kind of hardware it is running at. if it runs at what looks like less than 30fps on a 3090 system any real implementation wont be even remotely close to that for at least two more hardware generations.

the previous demo was running on a ps5 tho i think most of the frame issues in this one are because of the giant the environments are easily achievable since they're all static in a real game they'll probably give him lower texture quality

For you to run the project file of the desert valley scene (shown alongside this demo in the original stream) in UE5, the min sys req is 12 core CPU @ 3.4 GHz; GTX 1080/Vega 64, 32 GB RAM; the recommended/targeted machine is 12 core CPU @ 3.4 GHz, RTX 2080/5700XT, 64 GB RAM; Storage req is 205 GB. The info stated on the project file download page and for those you don't know, UE5 is available to download right now as early access. I think next-gen consoles are equal if not slightly better than the targeted requirements(RAM usage is usually higher when you open project file in the editor, so console's 16GB is sufficient) hence if you see today's demo of the said scene, Xbox and PS5 able to run it(here kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mpeKobBoqK6Rpmg.html) and of course PS5 also got another demo shown last year. Even they only run 1440p at 30fps, AMD got their DLSS equivalent tech(Fidelity Super Resolution) ready to be implemented in both consoles which will improve image and frame rates. For file size issue, there are several techs on the horizon that will try to solve that, like Sony-Kraken compression and Nvidia RTX IO. But bear in mind that Epic target 2022 release of UE5 and game that using it properly probably will release in late 2022 and beyond, in which hardware become more powerful(especially PC), new ways of optimizing things are discovered and many of other game engines will implement the features similar to nanite & lumen and invent another. I think by 2024-2025 this level of fidelity in games become mainstream.

I think it’s important to realize their pushing the limits on this engine on purpose purely for demonstration purposes to show what’s possible. Hence the low frame rate. I’m certain future games made in UE5 are going to be optimized as usual.
