I work in software development. This stupidity is everywhere. Slave gets renamed to replica or agent, master to main, blacklist and whitelist to denylist and allowlist. Doesnt sound like a big deal but everytime a piece of software changes their wording you have to change your code in some way, which can range from "done in 30s" to "we need a series of meetings to discuss the implications of the change"

@@snake555510 "master" was the term used for the primary branch in Git repositories for years before GitHub tried to strongarm the industry into changing. I make it a point to use master for all my git repos now. It also is used in multi-process communication. The master process is what creates and manages all the slave processes. If a slave process is not cleaned up, it is called a zombie. Parent/Child is also used a lot, but for some dumb reason these docs did not even mention them.

I went to a "sensitivity training session" at the bank I worked at. The lecturers told us that people were offended by "micro-aggressions". When we asked what these were they said they were involuntary muscle movements in your posture and facial movement that were used subconsciously and that we should avoid using them because they made some people feel threatened. I/we the class asked how they suggested we control subconscious/involuntary muscle movement and these assclowns just stood up there and gaped at us. I don't know if their brains had just emptied out or no one had ever asked them this before. The class pretty much went downhill from there, and this is all filled with investment bankers on 6 figures who usually manage to tow the company line and keep a straight face during corporate bullshit speak, they gave up and closed the meeting after about 15 more minutes of being roasted with questions. We never heard from them again.

It hit the rounds where i used to work. So very inclusive the university decided that the training was voluntary if you weren't "white". So ofc the theater union stage hands took the most liberal approach and nearly everyone opted out 🤣 (I think a couple new hires must have had to go) .. insane!

True, in french the word "it" doesnt exist, if we talk about a dog we don't refer the dog as "it" but with its gender word like "il ou elle" for "he or she". Even for inanimate objects or food for exemple the "gender word" is used to refer to it in a sentence without pronouncing its name. This is just plain stupid...

Its also "dont be polish" bc every every noun and every adjective describing a noun has an inherently assigned gender. A great example is when someone tried ask ChatGPT how to say "non-binary" is in Polish. And Chat replied "'Niebinarny' or 'Niebinarna' depending on the person's gender."

I'm almost sure that "nebinarny" and "nebinarna" has nothing to do with a person's gender. It's about a "gender" of a noun, like, "osoba niebinarna" (non-binary person) - "osoba" is a gender neutral word so it doesn't imply a gender of a person you are referring to, but you can't say "osoba nebinarny" But I don't speak polish, I speak russian. Russian also has a grammatical gender system yet there might be some differences

It's not specific to unreal / gaming. It's a software development thing. Github renamed "master" branch to "main" branch back in 2020. It's a total fiasco, and annoying AF, but there are much worse things at software companies, like "Chief Diversity Officers"... wtf is that lol? On the flip side, gaming development definitely has a bro culture history (as evidenced by blizzard, riot, you name it), and so there's been a lot of fake compensation to try and get ahead of inevitable issues. Corporate woke is just a cycle imo, and nothing to get too worked up about, it'll find a balance eventually.

When I was in college I was in charge of a group project that had both men and women and I referred to the whole group as "guys", I said something like "ok everyone knows what to do, let's do this guys". One of the girls pulled me aside and talked to me, she said "hey I know this might sound weird but thanks for saying that, it made me feel like I was one of the guys", she genuinely felt great that I wasn't giving her special treatment. I will never stop using 'guys' to refer to a group of people I'm working with

I assure you, nobody doing actual software engineering at that company would follow any of these rules, and nobody would care about them. At most it would be an inside joke. Imagine stopping all work to search and replace all these bad words in hundreds of millions of lines of code and configuration, inevitably breaking something in the process.

@@WoWUndadThat's not what coding standards mean... Not repeating code and modules are just part of reusability, which is just basic software development. Coding standards actually outline important guidelines to follow when writing code such as whether a variable should start with a capital letter or not and whether tab or 4 spaces should be used. There are no universal coding standards but there are agreed upon coding standards for all major languages and certain development environments or software. Unreal engine has its own set of coding standards which aren't binding and just a suggestion. Stuff like how a class name inheriting from a UObject should always starts with U, or E for a struct inheriting from UEnum, etc. You say you're a software engineer, I find that hard to believe that you would be one when you fail at understanding basic software terminology, especially such a term like coding standards that is extremely important to software development.

I work for an AAA game company, i do automation for them and i use Jenkins which runs on Masters, each Master is separated to have each a different platform, PS4, XBSX, etc, but for PC script runs i use slaves to start the script on them locally. :D So i do indeed run slaves. :)) P.S. The company is trying to make us not use the master/slave terminology though... but not like they can actually micromanage that shit.

So basically I can't use my native language to write code, subtitles or anything in unreal, cause it is grammatical and wordwise impossible to write names of things, because in polish all nouns have predefined gender and verbs and adjectives are changed to align with noun gender and there are no non-gender forms of them.

I don't think that's the case at all... this standard is for the Unreal Engine codebase itself, which will be written in English. Your game code can be written however you like. That's not to say that I agree with all of their rules, but people seem to be misinterpreting the scope of these guidelines.

Strangly they don't include the hirearchial nodes which is usually refered to as "child", "children", "parent" etc., and often ending up with functions such as destroyAllChildren, or killParent etc.

You joke but in object oriented programming, which I would assume UE uses a lot, refers to two related object as parent-child or sibling. Meaning that “killChild” or “killSibling” can be a legit function lmao

As true as this may be. This is only regarding code, which isn't publicly visible. What this video is referring to, is translations and what the users see. Also thank god they wouldn't change the standards of APIs because that'd be a nightmare.

@@ShiloBuffExactly, they don't care about the code itself, they wanna make sure anything labeled as "made with UE" won't offend any end users. On that note though, Git made a change back in 2020 so that all new repos are created with a 'main' branch instead of a 'master' branch.

Is this "virtual mandatory"? Is it for the github contributions primarily? Does this also include what text you show to end-users?
