My John Deere 322 is back with his model 47 snowblower for the third season in a row. After rebuilding the snowblower at the end of last winter, I made a further few tweaks to the tractor to make sure it was going to perform better than it ever had before for the season. A new tire and weight set up insurance that I have all the traction that I need. In this video, I take it through some of the heaviest drifts on my property and also describe the mods in more detail.

This is the best small tractor snowblower i have seen on youtube, better than the new ones even, not kiddin, great job on the tires too, i put ATV tires on my Johndeere so i would be able to climb hills better without slipping ....

"...A John Deere Dealership that I no longer go to..." Where have I heard that before! :D The helluvit is I BOUGHT my 430 (used) from the same dealer that couldn't seem to get me the right parts for it! I had one of those 'freezer box' 47 blowers for my 430. I KNEW it could move some snow but I, apparently, didn't have enough weight on the rear end. Between the weight of the blower, and that diesel engine sitting over the the front axle, I couldn't make any headway... I blew snow, for a number of years with that old 430 and a 38 sno-thrower! It may have taken a little longer, but it got the job done! :) I have since upgraded to an x748 with the current 47 blower. Six suitcase weights on the back, my big A$$ in the seat, no chains or wheel weights, and it goes through everything we get around here!

It all depends on the parts staff you deal with. Some of them are extremely knowlegable and helpful and there is the opposite end of the spectrum.

I have a similar blower setup on the X485 at my work. Fortunately it is an all wheel steer model, so you can keep it pointed even when the front wheels are lifted off the ground. Very handy piece of equipment!

1) Speed up the impeller to increase velocity out of the discharge chute. 2) Fab a cover for the base of the chute to prevent spillage/buildup out of the chute.

Yup, wheel weights, rear weights and chains certainly make a huge difference. Not sure why some people think you need to improve the impeller. That thing is moving a ton of snow at a really good pace. I run a Kubota with a front blower and as soon as you start to jam too much snow in the chute by going too fast you’ll either break a drive chain or your shear bolts. Nice set up.

Losterbox20 just watched your video. If I can make some suggestions: 1. Bite the bullet and do the snowblower impeller mod that is all over You Tube. I have done a couple of walk behind snowblowers and both threw snow twice as far after. Also does not clog up with wet/icy snow. 2. Sand and paint the inside of your chute. Less resistance so may help reduce amount of snow on top of bucket. 3. Some suggested closing in chute. Quick easy way is cut 2 litre plastic pop bottle open and temp install with bungee straps.

3 ideas for your steering; when it starts to slide, lift up on the blower slightly to put more weight on the tires. Second would be to take the air out and run a length of chain all the way around as tight as you can, then re-inflate. Last would be to make a pair of skis. : )

I love those tire chains - look awesome for traction!! I had an Ariens 1336 Pro snowblower that would pile snow like that in front of the augers. It's performance absolutely sucked compared to my other smaller Ariens 926 LE blower. Sometimes the engineers just don't math well and you end up with underperformance like this. I did a bunch of research to rebuild it and change belts on the 1336 and ultimately sold it. Bought a different Ariens machine that was built with correct pulley ratios. Much better setup. Good luck if you decide to address this - you will likely be very happy with results.

I have a repowered 420 (20.5 hp v twin Kohler) with the same blower, it's a snow eating machine. You might want to look at getting some Vredersteins tires for the front of your tractor, they work great.

That's a tough-looking snow killing tractor! The R4 tires look great on that 322. And I can confirm RimGuard is well worth the money...I won't run any other type of liquid ballast. That tractor is begging for some 18x8.50-8 V61's up front. I'd also recommend front wheel weights to help with your steering trouble.

I know that this is a pretty old post but I will try . I have a 322 that I drove from Ontario to Pensylvania to get about 15 years ago. It has served me faithfully mowing about 6 acres of grass and lots of snow as well, as I live in a snow belt. I have done a similar mod wlth 26/12/12 AGG tires and chains on the rear and 20" turf tires on the front. I found some very odd low profile X pattern chains that I modified to fit the front. I have a 3 point hitch that I built a steel dumping box for. I load the box with about 250 pounds of sand salt mix to spread on my drive and private road that is about 500 meters long. I have 3 blowers, 2 are model 49 single stage, one in working order and one for parts. I also have a 2 stage blower, can't remember the model. Its a shaft drive for a bigger JD tractor. It had all of the mounting brackets cut off before I got it, I think that the guy was going to build a self powered unit for an ATV? My plan is to use the mounts ftom the spare model 49 and build my own drive set up for the PTO. Anyway, nuff said about that, what I am really interested in is the "carb trick" that you mentioned? As with all 322's, my carb is the weak link, and any help would be appreciated. Regards

You were saying that you lose traction with your front tires. Might consider taking a set and studding them. Studs are reasonably priced on Amazon for the screw-in type.

two things to help. get a can on canola oil cooking spray and coat the whole blower before you start. 2 coats let dry between coats. 2, add a small piece of sheet metal to the bottom of the shoot to stop the buildup of snow on top. only need about 6 inches maybe less.

One way to chew up icy piles is to notch the tip of your auger flighting so it gives it some teeth. I have a walk behind Honda unit on tracks. While it doesn't have the capacity of your JD unit those notches help it go through any kind of frozen ice or sbow

Hi from PEI, Canada. That’s some tractor and blower. Love the sound. When you added up the weight, did you add in the loaded tires. I didn’t hear you say how much they weighed. Maybe I just missed it. I have a 1970 JD 140 H3 with the snow thrower. Great set up you have. My only bad thought about the snowblower and your tractor is, the blower is heavy and it will give steering components trouble. Steering box and related components can’t take the front end weight. Just my thought. Noel

Several things......those tires are terrible in snow, they are meant for general use on mostly hard surfaces, they will never load up right because the bars are too wide and they totally fill the center so the center of the tires never unload the snow very well......your better off with standard bar tires or aggressive atv tires with side patterns made for mud and clearing quickly.... and just fill them with -20 washer fluid, its cheap and easy and everywhere. Put 5rib tires on the front, no taller than 18" ones or the blower will be too high up and cause you issues of the blower not floating correctly....your just floating with the turf tires with no control surfaces. Also you most likely for sure have the 318 gear box on the blower(gear boxes look the same but the gearing is much better in the blowers that were not built from the factor for the 318's specifically)....it is slower than the gear box for the 420/430/650/750/850's( mine came off a 855) ect but your 322 has plenty of torque to run the faster gear box if you can find one, only jd parts online can verify via your parts number what gears you have. The secondary impeller is purposely designed to take less bites than its capable of to be able to run on the 318, there's no different impeller listed anywhere I could ever find. Often the paddles will actually bend backwards if you hit a large ice chunk or other debris....that's what happened to mine....after my upgrade i had no problems for at least 8 yrs now. I filled in all the gaps on my impeller(look in there and you will see only about 50% of the paddles are actually doing any snow removal and tiny little scoop edges) and added larger solid paddles all out of 3/8" solid steel. That made a huge difference letting the blower fully load up and throw most snow 40'. Even solid slush will not slow it down or have a chance to get past the impeller to freeze up the shoot.. Your always limited by how fast the secondary impeller can get rid of the snow.....the main auger doesn't matter as you can just drive faster or slower to load it accordingly. Im running mine on a 430 and its massively impressive after the mods at idle even because it takes big bites. The 322 IS a diesel block engine (long story...basically too many diesels in the line up those years for jd)so it has massive torque as well....i have one of those as well but with a highly modified single stage for it as a winter backup. For anybody using the steering brakes on these pre 1992 jds the brake pad glue often lets go.....last time I priced them at JD the were $25 per shoe.....but an easy fix is to copper rivet the shoes to the backers like you see on some automotive rear shoes....then they last forever as they really don't wearing with the stock pearson limited slip rear ends and the hydro drives. Love these old pre 1992 tractors......jd changed everything after these and some would say not really all good.
