My opening comment about gender would make more sense if you've read one of the many reviews in womens magazines.

On the gender thing, I actually do think doctors would take this more seriously if men had it and I think that "prediction" is backed by data from other diseases. I forget the exact numbers (I'll find a link later), but women take far longer than men to get diagnoses. Diseases more common in women also take far longer to get diagnosed and are taken far less seriously than diseases more common in men. This doesn't mean I think you've* been taken more seriously because you're a man though (Although that could be true). Rather, I think you might've been taken less seriously because you have a disease more common in women on top of having a disease so highly stigmatized (though even the stigmatizatiom of this disease started out as very blatant sexism). As a woman with this disease, I can tell you that every single health problem I've had, from this to migraines to even a broken finger, has been blamed on anxiety. Every single problem I've ever had. This is not to mention that 97% of the time, there's also accusations of stress, depression, hormones, malingering, attention seeking, etc. I can't tell you how much of this would've been different if I was a man, but I can tell you that many of my friends who are also women, regardless of the health condition they have, can relate in a way that most (but not necessarily all) of my male friends can't.
