The landsknecht were a German mercenary unit created to combat the dominance of Swiss mercenaries. The institution lasted from the end of the 15th century till the 16th century.

They were aware of what they were doing. Being a military man was a unique opportunity for social mobility (although the majority of the Landsknecht came from the "Middle Class", tiny landlords). As long as they got paid, they didn't care.

This is a minor thing, but translating “Länderschmause” as “National feast” is kinda misleading, it’s a compound of Länder (countries) and schmause, (feast basically) so it basically means “feast of countries,” with the feast showing how the emperor was eating the other countries like Flanders as if they were plates at a banquet. (My German is still a work in progress, if this is wrong feel free to correct me)

Germans mercenaries saved Russia. In 1572 huge Turkish-Tatar army move to finish it. Int the last stand Russian won the desperate battle of Molodi, just few km form Moscow. At least 7000 Germans under Jürgen von Fahrensbach fought bravely at Russian side.

He generally liked the way the English did christianity far more than the way the French did, in the fact that priests were just every day people as far as he could see, without much fanfare or being a class of their own, suggesting he liked the reformation although he was a deist and very critical of all three abrahamic religions. The HRE? He said that it is "Neither holy, nor roman, nor an empire". He thought it was a gross and incohesive mashup of states that existed basically in title alone.

By his time the HRE was pretty much defunct in all but name and had devolved into just being a battleground for Austria and Prussia, with most of the area hopelessly stuck in a feudal past and outdated concepts that the rest of Europe had already done away with. The internal feudal division of the HRE became worse and worse as time progressed. At the time of its founding by Otto the Great, there were only a few independent estates within the HRE. By the time of Voltaire, there were hundreds.

@@hardbassmonkey The HRE was pretty much centralised from it's foundations in the 800s until like the 15th to 16th centuries. Much more centralised than any other state in Europe and also the most powerful and most influential one.

HOLY (role of the pope and church) ROMAN (saw itself as successor to Rome spiritually and city of Rome was literally part of it) EMPIRE (translation of the German word „Reich“; Realm would have fitted better) So the name of the state was absolutely correct

After living half a year in North Rhein-Westphalia, I was resentful at the country for "not having an own culture". 3 Years on and I'm sorry about what I said. Germany has so much culture. That is true the globalist rulers are trying to suppress a healthy modern self reliance on Germany past. What I don't like is focus only on the Nazi and Kaiser time. There is so much more and 100.000s Germans were in the resistance against the German dictators my grand grand uncle was one of them. The ruler of the allied forces established a giant guilt complex to lay Germany and its people in chains. Generations of Germans were brainwashed that Germany and they themselves are inherently evil. Edit: For many this isn't of any relevance but Germany ruled by puppets of Washington looses more and more the capacity to defend itself and to preserve traditions and with that I point at the once great media and old style liberal discussion culture. The Germany I like is the one founded in the revolution of 1848. @@thisguy4345 The HRE had a close connection to the Holy see during all the middle ages (not always a beneficial or in any way nice one, but still), then secondly, the German King Regent became Emperor through coronation by the in most cases rome-based pope , thus receiving "his" empire, and thirdly, the very concept of the "true" empire, the imperium, is a Roman invention. So, again, how was the HRE not Roman?

What the word "german" ment over the centuries changed several times, and has nothing to do with how this word is used today.

@@Ajunta burgundians were german though. Danish was Germanic and yes in bohemia lived many czechs, but I would say there were as many germans, like in the towns of Pilsen or Prag. (Even Karl the IV and Jan Hus wrote in german). It is also a saying that everyone who has a german tongue (so who speaks german) is german.

@@Ghreinos Your defenition of the word "german" is the one of the 16th-to early 19th century. People of a language area of different germanic dialects able to speak and communicate with each other using an artificial created standard version based on Martin Luthers bible translation. The word "german" was not describing a homogenous ethnic or cultural group, and defenitely not a national identity. Burgundians weren't "german", using this definition. They were germanic. If you want to call them "german" you have to use an earlier definition of the word: Being a subject of "regnum germania".

I don't think the 1st Reich is the best period in German history or even a good one! he had a wonderful rise, and then a very long stagnation and degradation, until Napoleon ended the life of this relic of the feudal era! A feudal decentralized Empire is absurd
