Settlers in Gaza are turning on those who accept government compensation and volunteer to move. They're determined to sabotage Sharon's disengagement plan.

"If sick soldiers use weapons to uproot civilians, we are going to receive them with weapons," vows Rabbi Yasef Dayan. He claims that if Sharon goes ahead with the Gaza withdrawal, he will be assassinated like Yitzhak Rabin. In the settlement of Gush Katif, the mood is virulently anti-Sharon. Only one resident, Meir Rottenstein, openly supports the planned withdrawal. "As far as we're concerned, that man is an outcast," states his neighbour. Rottenstein's shop has been vandalised and his business boycotted. The Israeli peace group, Shuvi, claims other residents want to leave but are too afraid to speak out. "They're afraid of losing their jobs, that neighbours will stop speaking to them and their children will be beaten up at school."

They are practicing the same form of bullying in every community worldwide. Those who speak against them pay a heavy price, such as losing their job, becoming isolated, or being labeled as a bad person, which is essentially a form of blackmail.

Interesting to see this now in the context of what has happened in Gaza since October 7 and helps to explain how some Israelis are still clinging to idea that they will return to Gaza.

This is way older than these evil settlements and what they want. Israel has planned occupation of Gaza since the 50's. The difference then and now is than Sharon was willing to have some restraint.. but Netanyahu is a deranged war criminal, as are his entire joint cabinet.. and heck, most of israel.

smart though! I'm glad theres documentary proof of all this from years ago to show that this has been a long standing issue. The same words still being spoken again, just with newer cameras and modern equipment. Ideas have not changed.
