Small town living is often portrayed as an ideal existence. Unfortunately, this case proves psychopaths stalk even small town streets. Are the letters still being sent? I always got the impression the sheriff was, if not behind it, at least involved in it. The fact that the note that was sent to Unsolved Mysteries before the segment aired mentions “do nothing to hurt the sheriff” is a huge red flag. But also just kind of weird. However, I just saw a segment CBS did on this case in 2022, and it sounds an awful lot like Paul’s ex-wife may have been behind it. Their son died by his own hand in 2002. There’s a suggestion that he knew something, but who knows. It’s a very disturbing case.

I believe it was Mary with the help of her lover and possibly sister who were behind it. Why expose herself as having an affair? Right? To create an issue and draw suspicion away from herself for the events to follow. Maybe the killing of her husband wasn’t originally planned , maybe it was. But then they had to get the brother out of the picture with the frame job . That may have been the initial plan with her husband but it seems the husband had an idea of who the letter writer was so if he confronted him he could have been killed. But the brother would have kept on it so he had to go . I do believe the sheriff was involved wether he was the lover or close to the lover . The whole case stunk . Not to mention Mary would have access to that gun as it was her brother in law

Paul got so shafted in this murder case. It's totally obvious that there is no way he could've written those letters, especially while in prison. Having to serve 10 years of his life for something he didn't do. Ruin his reputation. The letters still being written while he was in prison should've convinced everyone of this innocence. Yet, not even his sister-in-law stood up for her brother-in-law and STILL let him take the fall. Plus, she wouldn't even be interviewed for this show. I think she definitely had something to do with the letters and her husband's murder. She probably was having the affair (they said she started dating the man "after" the murder. Yeah, right. How convenient) and had her lover kill her husband after the phone call, baiting him into a trap. This angle was never looked at by authorities at any point, yet it seems so obvious now. You have to look at EVERY angle during an investigation (especially that the spouse as a possible suspect), yet they seemed to have their minds made up. It seems like once you're convicted of a crime, it's almost impossible to get the conviction overturned, no matter what evidence proves your innocence. It's disgusting! Paul is a better man than me. He doesn't seem bitter at all. God bless him and that he may prosper the rest of this life for the total injustice he received in this case.

south South I think that *Mary Gillespie* was behind the whole thing. Who was the one who got the first letter? *Mary.* Who was the one who came up with the idea to write back? *Mary.* Who wasn't there with the kids on the night of her husband's murder? *Mary.* And who found the booby trap? *Mary.* She also would have had access to *Paul Freshour's* place and could've easily taken his gun to frame him. It was all about her and all signs point to her. Not to mention the fact that she admitted to the affair after her husband's death.

The British people who were interviewed in the Agatha Christie segment were very strange. They described the whole tragic situation in such a dramatic, almost gleeful, way. Very "National Inquirer"ish attitude. The only one I truly feel sorry for was her little daughter. That poor child had to deal with such drama and was never really referenced in this whole segment. Children almost always seem to be the forgotten and ignored victims in these situations. About Archie: He would be "disgraced" by divorcing Agatha, but NOT disgraced by being a cheating bum? LOL!!! Great logic, Arch!!!

Drunk History did an episode called Drunk Mysteries in the style of Unsolved and they did a sketch on Circleville letters. It's hilarious but they also present the totally not bonkers theory........Mary was sending the letters to herself. They theorized a school bus driver would know town gossip from overhearing children talking on the bus. I don't know, but I don't think it's actually the worst theory. Mary would potentially have motive to get her husband out of the way if she were having an affair.
@williamanthony9090
@williamanthony9090 5 жыл бұрын
San Dan- I've heard the Mary theory as well. She didn't need the kids to know town gossip, however. The theory that made the most sense, spelled out over on Reddit, was that there were two or three writers, with Mary being one of them.
@cheesecake134
@cheesecake134 5 жыл бұрын
@@williamanthony9090 Yeah, I've read some about that theory and think it's probably likely, just with the sheer volume of letters that were sent out. It would be hard for any one person to do that. I'd say Mary is the mastermind and one of the letter writers.
@sfletch3042
@sfletch3042 5 жыл бұрын
The fact that she didn't tell her husband about the letters was what made me think that she was up to something. It's not normal for a person in a healthy relationship to hide something like that from their spouse. Either she really was having an affair and somebody wrote those letters or she set this whole thing up in order to get rid of her husband. Either way I think she was having an affair.

Ah, the wonderful nostalgia... ❤️ An integral/active part of Unsolved Mysteries WAS the viewer. Unsolved Mysteries celebrated their show by *SOLVES!* Most celebrate by episodes (as I'm sure they did, but not nearly the same). Such an amazing show premise & how well it worked... Obviously this show could not work today... Not to the same degree. That's part of it's "magic". Right from the creepy, mysterious theme music, the plethora of stories, mainly unearthed & uprooted from everyday life, with some famous cases. Then, to our hero & host, the magnificent, inimitable, incomparable Mr. Robert Stack. RIP ❤️

The wife sent The letters to her self. She had the motive of covering up her affair and she had the ability to drive to Columbus to send those letters possibly right through her bus route since it was only 30 Miles away she probably could’ve done that. The fact that she was so callous inher testimony at Paul’s trial shows she wanted to get out of the relationship and knew where Paul’s gun was to set him up. I wouldn’t be surprised that the person Mary was having an affair with setup the booby trap and also killed her husband. The state police should have been brought in to take over that investigation since it was tainted possible by a bought off local sheriff.

Was going to comment a very similar thing - having seen this told on various different shows I find myself becoming more and more convinced that the wife was behind the whole thing. What better way to cover up your own misdeed than to send many letters accusing others of theirs making it look like it's just some random outsider. It reminds me of the woman who intentionally tampered with headache pills in stores so when she killed her husband by the same means, it would be presumed that he was just another victim. Where better to hide a book than a library?

I think Mary Gillispie was the letter writer. The letters alleged an affair that she later acknowledged did in fact happen, but only "after" the letters started. Yes I really didn't see how Paul would be silly enough to set up a "booby-trap" using his own freakin' gun. Nevertheless; he was in for 10 years for that crap. I just watched a new episode of 48hours and there's really not much more information in it. They had a independent handwriting expert say that she was 100% confident that all the letters were written by one person and that it was Paul. Also; it's said that his fingerprints were found on several of the letters, and that it's considered a "closed case". Paul predicted that people would continue to believe he'd written all the letters, even after his death and sadly; it appears he was right.

Not to mention the personality of Paul, albeit not evidence but also not incriminating, even if you act like a serial. Robert Stack seemed to never age. He was also in a number of good movies in the 1950s, and always looked the same through the 80s and 90s.

In the *Circleville Letters* case, I think that it was *Mary Gillespie.* 1. It was *her* idea to write back using her brother-in-law as a pawn. 2. She wasn't even home when her husband went out into the night in anger looking to confront *The Writer.* 3. She would've been able to steal her brother-in-law's gun because she was close to him. 4. It was her who found the booby trap. 5. And after it was all said and done, she admitted to having an affair. In my opinion, she orchestrated this elaborate plot to get rid of her husband, frame her brother-in-law so that she could continue with her new lover in peace and with insurance money from her husband's death. Oh, the deadly webs we weave when we practice to deceive..

There is a theory that Paul was set up because Mary's sister, like Mary, was unhappy in her marriage and wanted out. And I don't buy for a minute that Mary and the Superintendent only started having the affair after the letters became public knowledge. They were bumping uglies well before that. The only ones who knew where Paul kept his gun were himself (obviously) and his wife. Wouldn't have been hard for his wife to take it, or to tell her sister where she could find it. Yet it seems that the possibility of this happening wasn't even investigated. How corrupt do the authorities have to be though when Paul is described as a model prisoner, they know he was in solitary and couldn't possibly write the later letters, yet they still refuse him parole even when its become plainly obvious that he was innocent? They were told to refuse his parole.

Holden308 That's an interesting new spin on it. She could've had Paul's ex-wife get the gun and frame him. This case just shows how incompetent and lazy cops are. There is so much evidence pointing to Mary.

The #1 thing I always found odd is was the booby trap. If someone planted such a trap and she came upon it and tore it down a verily, seems weird that it didn’t go off. Or at least I’ve never heard it noted being poorly done or faulty, just if it had been pulled down as intended, it would’ve gone off. Go figure she tore it down correctly. Kind of like those who fake a robbery/murder by shooting everyone fatally except one got shot in the arm? Looking at you Bart Whitaker and Diane Downs, suspicious as fuck.

What Archie Christie did to Agatha was wrong.. but what she did to him was absolutely deserved! If he loved Nancy Neele, he could have asked for the divorce or pursued it himself first. One humiliation deserved another, and the fact that she so artfully did this to him I hope to one day place a rose on her grave in admiration.

Southamericangirl42 My heart just aches for Tommy's parents. I can't imagine how their pain is being compounded by the lies of people who should be upholding the law instead of breaking it, by folks who insult their intelligence at every turn. The higher law of the Lord dictates lying is an offence, too, and one day soon these men will receive their due. RIP Tommy.

I think the Circleville writer told Ron to meet him at an unknown location to settle the score. When Ron jumped in his truck and sped off to confront his tormentor, he was unwittingly speeding into a trap. There was probably something placed in the middle of the road to force Ron to swerve and crash. The Circleville writer is evil, and his calculated stalking and terrorizing of his subjects makes him even more terrifying.

In the first story it's so obvious that Mary and the superintendent are the killers. Mary and the superintendent made it look like it was her brother-in-law who was doing all this. I bet the superintendent hired someone to make that call to Ron and set up a meeting. I'm sure there was more people involved other then Mary and superintendent. This cases pisses me off. Why didn't they even mention that Mary might be a suspect!?
