This scene is later on, however the opening sequence with Sam Neil's voiceover may well be the best opening of a film.

I'm rather perplexed by some of the issues raised in this film. Why is Solveig Dommartin so cruel to her estranged boyfriend Sam Neill? Isn't she basically having an affair and treating Sam's character like shit? I have the edited dvd of this and it's 151 minutes. According to Wikipedia the full version is 5 hours long. Why is it so long? Does the full version make more sense? Is Solveig Dommartin more sympathetic and less annoying in the full version? I do like Solveig in the other Wenders movies, but UTEOTW asks more questions than it answers.

It makes a bit more sense, yes. You must see it as a miniseries (it is actually structured as that). And you'll love it.

Watch the full film. It's well worth the time. The party scene at the beginning is super fantastic. Basically it's a bunch of music videos strung together in a jokey film noir plot. Only Wenders could get away with it.
