As a pacific islander we do fight with other islands & make sure the people frm that island comes over to work for "our" chief(s)" once they become people of our lands we have no other choice but to keep them as "people of the land" meaning they are they same people as the "people of the land"

Military culture wasn’t imported, Fiji was always a warrior country

Fiji's problem was identified by the late Ratu Kamisese Mara, the racial tension but in all his education and privilidges and how he was raised and formulated his political ideologies he did not have a clear plan on how to formulate a clear vision for Fiji. Well he knew what was going on in other countries like Malaysia and Singapore but did not learn from what they did and build a better Fiji or set a clear vision of what Fiji is to become. The English also did not leave him with a clear plan as they were a receding power who had run out of ideas of how to develop a new nation, this is very unfortunate indeed. Well now its 2023 and it nearly 40 years after 1987 Rabuka's coup and now he is in power as the PM of a Coalition Government. What has he learnt from all that time observing what Fiji can do. He can do no harm but really reform the Economy to what it has which is enormous arable land that must be developed to produce other agricultural products that can be processed and value add right here in Fiji. Learn from South East Asia and really do what we have not done in the last 50 years.

@mike, You're conflating two distinctively different security ideologies. Military isn't warrior. Warriors don't have a written ethos that serve only the elite. British military culture exploited Fijian warrior culture. That, might be a better extrapolation. But no, we were not running around killing our own kin. So much is left out of history, Thomas Baker was killing people around Fiji and his army burning children, its well documented. Another thing is this documentary is incorrect about how the British wanted to preserve natives by isolating them from Indians. They wanted to isolate natives from each other so there wouldn't be an uprising. All the while they were taking native men (for tax evasion apparently) - to work on the British roads. Then they would decimate the entire village and move their children and women to other villages. Very few of the villages in Naitasiri are over 150 years old. Those are all new. Fijians were not allowed out of villages. You required a pass from the government. So many Fijian men died that Sir Arthur Gordon had to revise the tax codes in Fiji, basically for one, there wasn't a way to people to really pay tax, *??* secondly, people were getting suspicious and uprisings were common. Just have a look at the population, 60,000 Indians, minus 25,000, Fiji had around 150,000. Then somehow just a few decades later Indians are majority, and only now are indigenous ahead again by a small margin. Where did all the natives go? - well they died building roads and plantations. This is never taught. Why? Firstly, we don't have a culture of bitching, we accept our history and move on. But if we want to get into it, well its Jesus that hid what happened. Ordinance 29 allowed Christians to kill anyone with 'big hair' (a sign of non conformity). This is where we get the ibore - ulu levu. (Its not big head its big hair) Its also related to the ibore - ulu maquru, ulu whatever - . This was a propaganda to dehumanize highlanders who did not want to convert to Christianity, which at the time meant spiritual and cultural conversion by force. Which was spearheaded by Tongans and guns (Christians). Lotu wasn't a good word back than. This is where 'sulu vaka Toga and Dabe vaka Toga' come from. Because those were the uniforms and seating position in the churches. (not much space and no furniture). So yes interior Fiji still has a fear of the coastal Fiji and their doings. Much of 'Fiji' history that is taught is coastal history. Customs etc, those are just Bau and Suva coast histories and culture. Very different elsewhere. Anyway, the point is that its a lot more complicated than it seems. And we are not a culture of coup people because of our 'warrior culture'. It is indeed because of colonial and outside influences. But hey, toso tiko ga set tu. Lets just do better.

We thank the British empire for shaping my Fiji. Coups happened and we get over it. We are a independent nation. Races will be there. Races will be always a major challenge.

I’m usually a fan of the Coconet’s content, but this video wasn’t it for me. Unfortunately this video is quite biased and divisive. It doesn’t show the full story of the events that took place in Fiji, nor does it take into account the Indo-Fijian perspective. The video also makes it seem as if Indians generally came to Fiji on their own volition, when in reality, most Indians were coerced, kidnapped, or tricked into leaving their ancestral homelands. Overtime Indo-Fijians have become an important part of the Fijian society and the people generally are more United than this video makes it seem.

Some comments are hurtful. No one talks about how Indian laborers were mistreated by the colonial masters.

May our Heavenly Parent God guide the unity, harmony and development of Fiji. Interdependence, mutual Prosperity and Universally shared values is needed. Governance by the gun limits all three. Much more inter-marriage would help.

Indian Fijians have a homeland in India indigenous Fijians homeland is in Fiji. Fiji is funny indigenous Black people.

Get ur facts right. Viti couldn't be colonized. The British administrators didn't pillage and loot our natural resource like they did in other nations. Seva na i naki. We consist of 215 autonomous interconnected vanua within the archipelago. Ancient relations exist, many lying dormant but alive. The British didn't have their way. Viti suffered its fair share of losses, damages and hurt. By 1970 Viti gained independence. But still the long reaching arms of the British empire was still here. They had set up schools that produced statesmen that perpetuated their political will. By 1987, we severed ties absolutely with the empire. Losing membership to the commonwealth but gaining sovereignty becoming a Republic. The British left our shores over a period of half a decade with their egos hurt. In Viti today we're still reconciling many things. One for sure are laws pre-1987 have to be revised.
