Diego Garcia, coral atoll, largest and southernmost member of the Chagos Archipelago, in the central Indian Ocean, part of the British Indian Ocean Territory. Occupying an area of 17 square miles (44 square km), it consists of a V-shaped sand-fringed cay about 15 miles (24 km) in length with a maximum width of about 7 miles (11 km); its lagoon is open at the north end.
Discovered by the Portuguese in the early 16th century, it was for most of its history a dependency of Mauritius. In 1965 it was separated from Mauritius as part of the newly created British Indian Ocean Territory. The production of copra from coconut palms was the only economic activity until the early 1970s, when the last of the plantation workers and their families were removed-mostly to Mauritius, but smaller numbers went to Seychelles and Great Britain.

Hi Karanvir, happy new year!! You brought back memories that I had re Reunion Island!! I was on CMA CGM Bellini a few years ago that berthed at Reunion Island. The passage was Europe to Australia. I disembarked and took a walk to the ton centre and had a beer. It was so hot!!

Brought me so many memories of when i was on Diego Garcia 3 times on Brit ships, also reunion, Mauritius about 5 times.. Oh what a time!!!! Was the times when seafarers used to truly be in ports not like today when you can only say that you have been on a ship that has been to this port or the other as you have no time for shore leave :(

I am a huge fan of your videos. They are educational about a subject I do not know much about, but also so entertaining because of how well you edit them, add great music and amazing views. I am in the USA and work in IT with many friends from India. I think the people of India are not only very intelligent they also have a real lust for life. Living in sub tropical Australia, we are currently in the wet season. Huge storms. Hail and heavy rain. Above us they have already had 2 cyclones. But at sea everything is accentuated. Both by the uninterrupted view. And the medium you are travelling on. Watching the clouds rolling in. Or the sea start to swell. You couldn't be more part of nature. Like a toy duck, in Mother nature's bathtub.

Another nice and informative video so happy you`v e mentioned my home island Mauritius.FYI Diego Garcia belongs the chagos archipelagos.The nation closest to the Chagos is the Maldives. But under first the French empire and then the British, the Chagos and its people were administered as part of the African island territory of Mauritius, some 2,150 kilometers to the southwest, rather than as part of the Maldives 1,280 km to the north.The U.K., however, held onto the Chagos as the British Indian Ocean Territory in 1968 when Mauritius became independent.The U.K. is under great political and legal pressure to decolonize the islands as most countries are on record as saying that the Chagos belongs to Mauritius and that continued British occupation is illegal. Every court and tribunal to adjudicate on the issue, including the International Court of Justice in 2019, has arrived at the same conclusion.Returning the Chagos group to Mauritius would also benefit the Chagossians, the indigenous people of the islands.
