Born out of the playgrounds of New York City, the “And 1 Mixtape Tour” took streetball to the masses, challenging convention and picking up a team of basketball misfits along the way. “The Rise and Fall of AND1” traces the journey of how three young friends with a dream of bringing greater acclaim to the game they loved, connected with the underground artform of streetball, and ended up flipping the billion-dollar basketball industry on its head. AND1 co-founders along with streetball legends The Professor, Hot Sauce, Skip 2 My Lou, The Main Event, Shane the Dribbling Machine and more reflect on their experience and the brand's journey.

I remember when the first And1 mixtapes started circulating. Everyone would be like "did you see what such & such did on that mixtape?!". These dudes went from being streetball legends to household names for many of us basketball fans. They owned the Summer. I watched the ESPN 30/30 on these guys, but Netflix has been killing it with their documentaries as of late. Hyped to see this!

This was pretty much the last bit of real culture the youth had in its day before social media and video games reeeeally got a hold of them. We would play on average 4 hours a day on school days and weekends 12+. Its what we had, it earned respect, it was our culture and identity. We idolized every move these guys did and practiced everything religiously. Now 35 years old, i pick up a basketball maybe once a year and embarrass the new generation of kids and get idolized by them for it. On the flip side, its also partly why i don't like to play anymore... this culture was so much about making the other person look bad and such that it just doesn't sit right in my stomach anymore. Id rather just practice some handles and shoot around for an hour by myself tbh. Kids these days will lock in 2000+ hours on things like fortnight or valorant or whatever... Pretty much every teen boy back in those days logged 3x those hours on street ball. It is what it is, The preferred crafts and heroes always change with time.

Yeah, they came up during my era and didn't know how to move with all the success. If And1 would have started during this generation they would have had a better understanding of balancing the money and even expanding the brand. @@calapsesathir4408 - They would have had more resources available to them to package them as a group and to also expand the profiles of individual players for even more money for themselves. Back then, the money was different for dudes who weren't really savvy with business. We didn't have what they got today the access to numerous educational items and educated folks that understand how to brand and protect the money. There are far more protections in place to increase the chance of avoiding money issues.

The original owner (Seth) sold And1 to American Sporting Goods, thats when it went down hill. There were a series of bad decisions as far as marketing goes. This was actually a decent doc - I remember how big And1 was in the late 90s and early 2000s. Went from Foot Locker and Finish Line exclusives costing big $$$ to being in abundance in the dad section at Walmart and Kohl’s under $10 (where it barely moves off racks). A lot of kids today had no idea that “Walmart brand” was bigger than Nike 2 decades ago, selling out stadiums for games, and made some of the most memorable media covering street ball. I’d love to see an And1 revival after the whole Champion brand made a comeback, but at the same time I wouldn’t simply because of how unique that brand was to that era in basketball. Plus, they sold out … literally and figuratively. What made And1 rise to the top was the crew behind it and the team they put together. It was the people involved that made it popular. Corporations don’t really understand that, so it would just be And1 stuff being charged $40-60 over a cheaply made tee sold in big chain stores that you can find for half price on Walmart’s website (just hidden a bit)… *_exactly_* like how Champion is now despite its comeback.

I remember when And1 came to our country in the South Pacific Islands (Fiji). It was awesome to see the crew and play against our local team.

They straight up exploited these guys. They want to act like they didn’t but they did and it shows with the simple thing of feeding them pizza while staff had 5 star meals in their tour bus. They maximized profits for themselves and gave nothing to the players. They focused on growing the company as quickly as possible to sell merchandise but gave crumbs to the players. They were racing and rushing to fill their pockets and in turn the the players talked about the shitty contracts they got and that’s when it all came crashing down.

Yeah exploited them by putting them in the ritz Carlton and the 3 million dollar tour bus and shit…. Oh yeah also don’t forget the orgies they forced them to have.

@@dranderson6071 stil doesnt change the fact that the players were exploited and betrayed. just when it was about to boil over it all came to and end.
