Untouchable Love is a tale of romance creating a conflict between parents and children, religion and human rights, of youth who reject their culture to assert the freedom to love, and of Hindu extremists who view love as a threat to the system, for an increase in inter-caste marriages will blur caste boundaries and create an equal society. These five love stories, of high-caste girls running away with untouchable boys, are modern-day versions of Romeo and Juliet. Manoj and Parbati’s affair causes ethnic cleansing in their village. Khadga and Jaisara live in the jungle to hold on to their love. The romance of Shyam and Saraswoti unleashes the wrath of the police on the untouchables. Kishor faces jail because he loves Ranjana. And the case of Rajib and Sabina, is it a double suicide, or murder?

I guess you are a man. Men can do it, usually after the lower caste girl pays very big dowry to marry up. Nothing not seen already. I appreciate your feeling though, I hope your family, especially your mother thinks the same and, if you will marry lower, don't ask dowry, or, at least, not high. I wish you best marriage and happy life.

It's interesting how compassionate and understanding the people of the lower castes were, defending love, and fighting for their right to love, v.s. the so-called "higher castes" who beat and tortured these women because of who they chose to love. Better education and status cannot teach humility or empathy.

Shocking and disturbing to see the couple rather be dead than to live without each other or wed someone out of love to please others. That is true love, but doesn't make their actions right. They've faced stumbling blocks along the way and their rights violated, and their anger about not being able to choose the love of their lives boils over so they took the suicide pact as their only escape route to leave and let freedom reign. May Got rest their souls.

Love is love no matter what caste, race gender or background yo possess. I am from Nepal and every day when i listen to these stories my heart feels bad for lovers. But there is always a silver lining and things are changing for better. My generation is much more open minded to these so called caste issues and every time I see a intercaste marriage it brings a smile on my face as it is a small step towards a better world.

Been watching a bunch of these types of programmes now, and it's mindboggling to me that there are so many stories where a girl is forced away from her home (kidnapped, sold, whatever), forcefully married off and society does little to help her. But when a girl chooses to marry someone of her own will, someone she has declared to love, then she gets forcefully separated from that person by the authorities themselves...

They tell new immigrants that as apart of the Story. But that Story is a Lie. When the current Europeans didn't even want the current day American Caucasians it was the African-Americans who helped built the USA into the wealthiest country in the world. Do the DNA! They are Brothers and Sisters 😊 Just like Australia, the USA was a pension-colony of Great Britain until its its Independence. All these Rights that new immigrants, old immigrants and all of us truly enjoy is because African-Americans fought to get them for everyone. Fact!

@Samantha Wise If this was the case, they wouldn't be struggling financially now, would they? They knew, in the beginning, they wouldn't be accepted. If you listened to what they said almost all of them admitted that the girl's family will kill them once they find out about the relationship. It seemed only one girl's family learned to accept the marriage and even then they probably didn't offer any financial support.

yes it does happen. the bride is not usually accepted by the family if the family has traditional values which can lead to both men and women being kicked out of the family but there are people who are more open to these things these days and the society has been changing so more people have been going for love marriages and inter caste marriages. hopefully the caste won't be an issue for marriage in the upcoming generation ❤️

Oh my gosh, as a Westerner, this documentary & all involved, has touched my heart ten fold. Love is love, no matter where in this world one roams. I remember so vividly now, falling deeply in love for the very first time in my life, although i'd had a few bf's prior, but had never lived with anyone, or gone all the way. Eight years later & married, we're still going strong & our love does grow. It's a truly special, precious & magical feeling & not for one minute, do i take this love for granted. For i know very well, that such connections don't come around too often, if @ all. Life is truly fragile and very precious, so if you've found love, do not let it go & if you're struggling, for whatever reason, then do all you can, to try & work things out. There again, don't remain within an unhappy marriage, but always try hard first, as you initially made a complete commitment to your other. My best wishes to all & may peace & love always prevail, over hatred & evil.

for anyone who's confused out here- #1 this documentary is about Nepal not India #2 yes, there's caste system in India as well the basics of castes divided in the Hindu religion are from top to bottom in social standing and so called "purity". They are given diffrent places in the order of the world and their 'tasks' are diveded as- The Brahmins (highest ranking caste, the literate and knowledgeable figures) The Kshatriyas (rulers and warriors) The Vaishyas (Merchants and businessmen) The Shudras (lowest ranking caste, some of which include the 'untouchables' who are reduced to labour work.)

@swarup mitra nothing has changed. Even today Hindus are practicing caste system and untouchability as like they were practising earlier. And honourable presidents you mentioned it's all about politics my dear friend it was never about social equality. They are made presidents just to attract SC/ST votes. Even today inter caste marriages are seen as a terrorist activity in out society. Even today dalits are getting killed for riding a horse or keeping a moostache. Every day 4 dalit womans are raped just because of their caste by upper caste ppl according to NCRB. So I don't think there is any change in our society

The story of all these people of my country just broke my heart. When I was in school, I used to read about this so-called upper caste and lower caste and also punishment against discrimination. Well, the law sure did nothing in most of these cases. I am sure this video is quite old even though it is recently uploaded but I know that this discrimination against caste, religion, etc still exist in my country. The beauty in this is how epic romantic love transcends class; all stories I’ve heard always included urban sites, thesis just lovely. The smiles they have when they talk about how they met and how they love each other. The tragedy in this is that India - or rather, Hindustan was well on their way of getting rid of the caste system when the British colonialised the subcontinent and worked to keep it. Hundreds of years later, the wound still bleeds.

"The caste system as it exists today is thought to be the result of developments during the collapse of the Mughal era and the rise of the British colonial government in India.[1][6] The collapse of the Mughal era saw the rise of powerful men who associated themselves with kings, priests and ascetics, affirming the regal and martial form of the caste ideal, and it also reshaped many apparently casteless social groups into differentiated caste communities.[7] The British Raj furthered this development, making rigid caste organisation a central mechanism of administration.[6] Between 1860 and 1920, the British formulated the caste system into their system of governance, granting administrative jobs and senior appointments only to Christians and people belonging to certain castes.[8]" Wikipedia

Very complex. In the 1930s, Gandhi began to advocate for the idea of heredity in caste to be rejected, arguing that "Assumption of superiority by any person over any other is a sin against God and man. Thus caste, in so far as it connotes distinctions in status, is an evil."

Great quote from the character Didier Levy of the book "Shantaram" regarding how Indians are when it comes to love: “The Indians are the Italians of Asia", Didier pronounced with a sage and mischievous grin. "It can be said, certainly, with equal justice, that the Italians are the Indians of Europe, but you do understand me, I think. There is so much Italian in the Indians, and so much Indians in the Italians. They are both people of the Madonna - they demand a goddess, even if the religion does not provide one. Every man in both countries is a singer when he is happy, and every woman is a dancer when she walks to the shop at the corner. For them, food is music inside the body, and music is food inside the heart. The Language of India and the language of Italy, they make every man a poet, and make something beautiful from every banalite. They are nations where love - amore, pyaar - makes a cavalier of a Borsalino on a street corner, and makes a princess of a peasant girl, if only for the second that her eyes meet yours.”

Watching them, you will notice their love in their eyes. They can't stop smiling while looking back at their story. Love is magical and knows no boundaries. When you fall in love, you will become blind, deaf and mute as well for these kind of love should be kept secret cause they believe that it is forbidden in their culture. I really admired their courage to fight for their happiness.

Thank you for this documentarie, I did not know this also happened in Nepal. 2000 I married a Nepali refugee here in NZ. He never told me about caste but he would always say after fighting other Nepali or Indians “it’s my right to beat them” Now I think he was from a high caste. I am a Maori 2nd Native of my Country, but I was adopted to a Scottish family. We do not believe in Caste, or ‘white collar, blue collar’ but this has made me understand much more about my ex husband and his drunken stories which I couldn’t fathom at the time. I feel for all these races who still live under the ‘caste system’ WE CANT HELP IT, WHO WE LOVE Blessed be you all xox Mero naam Wendee Sherchan Ho.

Completely touched this was the reality of my country but now it’s slowly changing the society and thought process of our Nepali people. Same here, my father also told me to get married with Christian girl if I don’t father told me he would not allow me to be in his family but later I got married with Hindu girl. For seven years my father never spoken with me but now everything is okay ... boys and girls be careful specially in Nepal you may lose your life because of your love. You will be expelled from your home or society or you will be in jail for long or because of your love your family will get jailed and beaten to death. Our gone generation have created so many unhealthy systems, races and castes in the societies but now we most wake up and change our people thinking, change the bad things in our culture and religion step by step. So that our coming generations gets proper life and best systems in our country and communities.

as a part of growing up, this has always been one of my greatest fears! What if I fall in love with someone of the other caste? I know this is hypocrisy, but this is also what prominently exists in the society. I absolutely loathe this whole concept, but it's hard to go against our families and the beliefs in the fear of being disowned or something more brutal. I really feel sad, I don't want to grow up!! Please let hearts love hearts, and not just match something as insignificant as color or wealth or caste. These stories are truly inspirations.

I'm so sorry that you fear your own family. Being disowned is one thing but physical violence is against the law in the West. I sure hope for that reason you live in the West and not Nepal. This video has opened my eyes to the brutality of families aided by the police and courts.

Watching how these love birds talk of each other truly & wholeheartedly makes my heart smile. Just wish they would let them be. ❤

My great grandmother born in 1875 and was a “maid” pretty much the slave of a lord, they were in love, and she got pregnant with my grandfather, which was fine until she got pregnant a second time two years later and that couldn’t be hidden nor contained so to protect her and them, the family married her off to the priest of the church on their land, when my grandfather was 15, his mother husband the priest who had been trusted to love and look after her battered her to death and was hung for his crime, leaving my grandfather and his brother an orphan because they were the illegitimate sons of a lord who wasn’t allowed to accept them, this happened in Scotland in the early 1900s, so by birth right he was a lord but due to his mothers caste he was unable to claim his title being the eldest son and remained illegitimate, people shouldn’t be still living by this system, I wonder how different our lives would be had he been accepted and had his title, my mother would have inherited the title because even though she had older siblings, the only biological son my grandfather had drowned at 8yrs old, my mums older brother was raised thinking my grandfather was his daddy, he could do no wrong in my grandfathers eyes, but in fact wasn’t his biological father, but due to what my grandfather had gone through as a child being rejected by his father and then loosing his eldest son, he adored my uncle as his own, there were another two brothers but their father took them away and she never saw them again, we are however now in touch with their daughters and granddaughters via FB xx
