Unveiled: The Kohistan Video Scandal | Tribal Justice | Investigative Documentary from 2016
The honour killing story revealing the conflict between constitutional and tribal justice and the faultlines in Pakistani society.
When a mobile phone video goes viral showing four girls clapping while two boys dance in a remote village in Kohistan, rumors emerge that the local tribal jirga has ordered their killing because of the shame they have brought. The boys manage to flee into hiding and accuse the jirga of having murdered the girls.
Under pressure, the Supreme Court sends a fact-finding commission to the village to investigate. Calls are made for justice for the girls and an end to the jirga system. A court order is issued for the girls to be brought in front of a judge, dead or alive - a first in Pakistan legal history. But are the girls still alive?
The Kohistan Video Scandal reveals how digital technology is catalyzing the pace of conflict in many traditional societies, pitting old beliefs against modern views.
UPDATE: In 2019, three years after this documentary was finished, Afzal Kohistani, the 'Honour killing' whistleblower and a brother of the men in the video, was shot dead in the north-western city of Abbottabad.

That last interview he gave with Vice sealed the deal. For those who were after him, they were able to figure out where he was I believed because of how careless Vice was in documenting the journey to his secret location that housed his remaining family. I wonder if he told them the interview is fine but just don't show anything that could help reveal the location. Was he assumed that would be the case but after the interview, Vice decided to show because the 1st interview he gave with an English film company had already put out a great informative documentary. Shame on you VICE!!!!!

@@Garbeaux. Sanctuary is usually granted in high profile cases from Pakistan & India. The logistics are usually planned & funded in the sanctuary country & the charities involved in the case. I have no idea what happens in the majority of cases that don’t get covered by the international press.

Terrible cases like this draw international attention & outrage. They help to raise awareness & pressure on governments to crackdown on violations of human rights conventions. It comes too late to save these individuals but their tragedy helps to save the lives of future “honour based violence” victims.

They were not supposed to be together because they were not family members, but the actual issue was the video. They cannot be seen in public even with the veil on, it's the local tradition. So when they appeared with their faces recognizable, on a video that went viral, and wich was seen all over the village, it was too much, especially with boys around. That's how I understand it... :(

The rep. That came to court for the girls and their families didn't want to be on camera because it was against tradition. Yet throughout the film there are people speaking on camera from the village. The lies are evident. I hope the killers are brought to justice and things change for the better for women.

The Pakistanis in the video use a fair number of English words because the region was formerly colonized by the British. Knowledge of English is quite common and even people who don't know the language (like the Kohistani tribesmen in the video) may use at least a couple of English words that have seeped into daily use.
