Let me guess, you have been taught to swing low (close to the ground) and slow (a slow controlled swing) when you use your metal detector. This video will make you think twice about doing that. There are new techniques, settings and technologies in metal detecting that did not exist 10 years ago.

OK, 40+ years detecting here. You can't teach signal investigation... It comes with time and experience. At any sweep speed you get a signal, Good or bad you then sweep to find the best signal (Make or break) the signal, dig or don't dig. You speed up, slow down, raise or lower the coil, you work the signal from different angles. You go into PP/All metal and SIZE the target. Each area you detect will have a different investigation, Field/ Yard/ Playground/ Woods. Low and slow, Get the signal, Investigate.

“No it doesn’t. Never did.” 😂😂Fantastic video. I think you raised very valid points. To me, it interprets as detectorists can swing at any rate they want and still get results. I definitely won’t be swinging my detector as fast as Gary. He’s a beast. Slow is certainly not necessary these days, but the low is. If there’s a 2-inch grass canopy I’ll be running my coil across it. If it’s bare soil, I’ll keep it around 2-inches above the surface. Well done, Merrill ✌🏼❤️😊🍀

Now I know why I sell so many coil repair parts on eBay 😂😂😂 I like to think my arm will last all day, 7-8 hours at least, swinging at a nice steady pace. I’m certainly not in a rush to use up all my hunting ground in one season, so swinging like tiger woods isn’t going to help anyone really. You might swing twice as fast, but I’ll be out there three times longer enjoying my hobby. 😉

As a detectorist who hunts not only for coins/relics etc with a vlf D2, but also prospect for gold with a PI GPX6000. What your saying is correct for the VLF, but for looking for gold nuggets, low and slow is also correct.

I think when one finds a target then without realising we all swing slow and fast over target to get to know the tone shape to find out target size using one’s ears, if you swing to fast as your walking your chances of missing targets goes up including your heart rate as it’s not a race, relaxed and rhythmical and enjoy the time spent swinging gets you the best finds, intreating topic and glad to see you are showing us some older machines in use vs the modern machine 😎😎😎

Slow and low is still the way to go for instance when hunting roman coins, these are often in heavily mineralised, iron infested ground the coins themselves hard to separate from the small iron nails only by going low and slow can you pick out the little clues in the tones that you would miss at even a moderate swing speed

Working with machines that don't have or never had recovery speeds, I always found that scrubbing with a slow swing yielded deeper better targets. I worked with low hum thresholds and hearing that brief disruption in tone was the main goal for the "unrecoverable" targets.. BTW: If you want silver, 6KHz or LOWER is the winner...

Or ears...........the answer is no. You will create a pattern full of gaps and you'll miss targets due to noise overload on busy sites. Lower and slower is still the best option and if you do it you'll be shocked at how many more targets you hear. Perhaps not good targets but there will be more. We don't have to crawl along like a worm anymore which is nice but our human limits have not been improved on..........yet.

@@mickbalton7028And that's why I have gotten rid of the Simplex + , because of the Tone's that are sounding like a Sick Duck that will hurt your Ears after ALOT of target's and I have Now the X-Terra Pro and I can change it up to suit me and my ears and the X-Terra Pro I can change the settings on the swing and the Simplex + doesn't even know what that is and about everything that the Simplex Was saying that every target is a good target and then I got the X-Terra Pro and it's telling me about the target and my junk to Good Target ratios has gone from digging up ALOT of JUNK Targets using the Simplex.. to getting better targets using the X-Terra Pro and Diggin Up More Coins and also not looking for another Trash Can to put my trash in besides carrying it around when I was using the Simplex + and is that Why Notka Macro has Discontinued the Simplex + ?????!!! And the X-Terra Pro is a totally different Detector that is the Best Single Frequencies Detector that you can afford.....❤❤

The one thing you didn’t address in your low and slow dissertation is depth. Transmit depth decreases exponentially given a constant transmit power. Your target response separation might be great at relatively shallow depth, but if you are holding your coil high off the ground, you won’t hear those deep targets at marginal depths despite the great recovery speed. Low and slow ( relatively) is still a good detecting practice with today’s technologies. If you are still using some of the older Minelab detectors, you will be shocked at the stuff you missed because you swung the machine too fast. The Sovereign for example will find targets with a crawl swing speed that you missed using what you call a low and slow swing. The test of a good detectorist is going back to places you’ve been before with your older detectors and only finding a few good deep targets. You never get them all, but you sure as heck can get a lot of them with good detecting habits. I go back to old sites and still find goodies, but if I don’t find anything with a newer machine, that means I was thorough when I was there previously. Either way, I gain confidence in my detecting prowess. And as a bonus, I am forced to find new sites and that always excites me.

I've been metal detecting with people who have the equinox and 50% of their targets are iron! One guy repeatedly asked me to swing over his targets he wasn't sure about and in one swing I'd say iron and he wouldn't believe me until he dug up iron. I've watched you when you're doing your LIVE digs and you are regularly digging up iron. I rarely dig up Iron with my CTX 3030! If you set the CTX to recovery fast it will do that coin trick. Minelab have said that the CTX is comparable to the manticore. I'd like to see you do that recovery speed trick with the Nexus

its because they don't know how to use the equinox ..you have to listen to the shape of the tone if it cuts off or sounds choppy or its a big wide signal its usually iron.. only iron i dig is the odd round piece and they also trick my minelab fbs machines

Thanks for sharing Merril 2 points I would like to add to your comments regarding the Deus and my sweep speed. 1. You need to sweep faster in fresh stubble because you need the inertia to lay it over. Go to slow and the coil will jam in the stalks. You will see in my pasture videos I very often sweep much slower because the conditions allow it. 2. By using a faster sweep speed over a target you will obtain better signal information. Sometimes if you sweep to slow the iron tone will be dominant and the Non-Ferrous tone will be weak. Sweeping far above the ground like you describe will only benefit large deep targets, however not ideal if you are searching for small coins like here in the UK. We have been using this high search method with the Deus and ORX in Goldfield for years, we have made videos about this subject. Wishing you all the best Gary.

Casper Metal Detecting here - Low and slow to me is the way to go in older areas and spots you hit often and has stuff down deep I hit many spots that has old gold and old silver over a foot down - most of these spots are hammered for their fresh drops most of the guys i run into at these spots fly and try to hit a football size area in a 1/2 hr. At the end of a hunt i will talk to a few and they have a pouch full of fresh drops but i will get the fresh drops along with some older relics and coins and now and then a piece of old gold Its depends on what you want to go for sometimes - There are times these guys will go for the new drops and if spot is pounded by a handful of hunters - they may clean out the new stuff and they will leave - i can slow down and still pull some goodies down deep that they passed up - when im on vacation and time is limited - rules change

If you scrub the coil and there is a coil wire (which is the case for most detectors), it causes the wire to move and a moving wire in a magnetic field gives a signal.

You made me laugh with the ad for the White's machine. That was the new technology compared to the White's machine I sold and used in 1978. There was a meter on some of the high end machines but you really need to go by sound and still do. We dug everything back then and still do today. I think if I swung the coil as fast as you were showing, I would only get to hunt half as much as I do now. My arm would be worn out. Good stuff and I enjoy your videos.

Loved the video, Merrill. I generally use the threshold, if it has one, to hear the ground minerals and adjust my swing speed and recovery/reactivity accordingly. Once I have a smooth threshold I have a good swing speed for that ground, then I know what to set recovery speed/reactivity at.

On the first part of your video where they say the whites metal detector will tell you everything that’s in the ground and you reply no they don’t. I’ve been using a white XLT, and then a DFX for 20 years if you know that machine and have ratchet pinpointing turned off Using mix mode While using all the tones, I can tell you 80% of the time what that target is going to be exactly. I have a manticore which I’m new to and it is more powerful than a DFX for sure the thing is the white Coin finding super machine. It’s not for the beach but if you want relics and coins 6.59 kHz band Will be right up there, cwith the best of the best for finding silver. Now I do agree that it is outdated but for someone new to Metal Detecting, a white XLT or even a DFX for close to $100 there is no better option out there. I love your videos MERRELL, but you got to acknowledge that white was significantly ahead of its time and is still useful to this day. Not trying to argue with you. Just wanted to throw my two cents in. I love your videos keep it up buddy.

Well said Merrill. I think those of us with newer faster response detectors have slowly adapted to moving quicker and not scrubbing is because we can without performance loss. The few times low and slow is useful is if you are gridding an area for a lost item or if you’re in a really trashy area that you have to pick out the chirps of the higher, valuable targets.

The slower swing speed is a bit more sustainable on a long hunt vs turbo mode, there is also the arcing thing on the end of each swing which could lead to missing signals. Faster recovery speed is definitely a huge improvement. What was your manticore recovery speed during that test?

@marypruitt444 AND since you haven't purchased a new Detector yet, have you checked out the X-Terra Pro yet and it's not that expensive detector that you both can get for about $ 500 and single cost is $269. And I have the X-Terra Pro and I Use to have the Simplex + and it love's EMI and dysfunctional when it's close and about everything that Notka Macro Makes is a running Hot type Or style of Detectors that I have stopped going to some Parks and Permissions that have the high EMI that the Simplex couldn't handle and so far Anything Minelab is Going Great for the high EMI area's that I couldn't get to detect with the SIMPLEX (Notka Macro) and the Garrett's Detector's and Teknetics Detectors but so far Minelab Detector's know what they are doing and I love the X-Terra Pro ❤️........ and I think you will too once you have it in your hands and do make sure to Go to a Detector store and try them out and just don't listen to the crowd and try them out before you spend any money on Something that you may have to go back and Return it and some people are trying to say that the X-Terra Pro is a joke detector but I know it's not and I also know that you can't run any kind of detector on full sensitivity without any kind of ground Feedback Jumpy VDI and I have my X-Terra Pro set at 12 Sensitivity and no ground Feedback unless I get a Junk Target And the X-Terra Pro let's Me know you don't want to Dig it up and then the Simplex + said that they were great quarter Tone's Targets and it was a junk iron signal target after I spent the time to Dig it up and see what the target is and that's why I'm recommending the Minelab X-TERRA Pro with the extra frequencies of 5-8-10-15 and that the Notka Macro Product's that is only using 1 frequency of 15 MHz and it's cheaper than the Simplex Ultra lineups and the Simplex Tone's Squawk like a Duck that is Sick 🤢..... And do try any detector out before you buy it and some places have a great test garden that will help out with the decision what to get but I'm recommending the X-Terra Pro over anything Notka Macro makes....... and the X-Terra Pro has some additional features that are in the advanced settings and I have been using the All Metal Mode and the X-Terra Pro is a 1 Button Push to get to it And All Tone's if I have it on that setting and the X-Terra Pro has a tone of 1-2-5-all tones and Depth Tone And the Simplex is a 5 button push just to get to it and A single tone for the all metal mode And I would still have to dig it out to see what it is and I have to stop swinging the Coil and push the Buttons just to get to it And the X-Terra Pro is one button push and so much User Friendly Detector and it's like having a Top End Detector for the cheapest price....

Good video Merrill, a subject most won’t touch. It is easier to just detect at my speed instead of being worried about swinging too fast. I find my Manticore works great at most speeds and I don’t worry much about it anymore.

The Minlelab Sovereign II is still my favourite detector I've ever used. I found so many coins and rings going over other people's ground it was amazing....and deeeep. I just ran it wide open, and it was like a symphony of flutes going off, constantly, but once you knew what you were listening to, it was absolutely deadly.

Well this is not only the 1st video of yours I have watched but it was so informative that I just had to subscribe to your channel. Now I see you have another video I have to watch next. It's about what detector to buy for 2023. That's my kind of detector if it finds beach babes laying in the sand. I'll take two of them.

When I have detected low and slow on certain grounds with the D2 I was able to pick up targets difficult for detectorist to find on beach for example with low reactivity. I have found good targets swinging high about maybe 4in in stable to cherry pick in that environment.

Good video .i have noticed before when i swing my simplex fast that i get targets easier than when i go slow .but not realy saw it as clear as now with your video .had a man told me few years ago that i swing way to fast but it works and obviously save time and get more targets 😎

Good video, though I always thought the "don't scrape the ground" was heavily implied in the "low" part. The "slow" part also is still relevant in my opinion. Everyone does the separation test with good targets (coins) and close to the coil (ironically "low"). To be more accurate it would be junk like iron, with targets at varying depths. Going slow over that situation would give you the best shot at picking out a target.

Funny - I often observed, that swinging faster gave a clearer signal + ID on very deep signals close to detection-edge. Swinging slow definitely helps on loaded sites / patches, but swining fast does seem to gain a little depth 🤷🏻‍♂️

I think low and slow means a more thorough swing... basically telling a detectorist to keep to a proper swing and make sure you cover as much area as possible!!

I hear you Shane! But how do you explain Gary from skill school? I’m not saying to swing high and quick, I’m showing that detectors are more capable in separating targets than a generation ago.

@@MetalDetectingNYC wasnt disagreeing. your personal skill level with discerning sounds and quirks while swinging can definitely increase or decrease the your speed . i too think the machines are geared to go as fast as you want . but technique based on ones personAL skill level is the answer to the equation IMO. add concentration and desire to find treasure and look out!!! you are doing a awesome job of making us think btw!! thank you for that!

That White’s commercial is a joke, and it seems so retro but I have experienced this from switching metal detectors from an atpro to the minelab with the Garrett I had to swing slower because of the recovery speed but with a minelab I can swing a little faster but I really like watching your videos. I enjoy them very informative.

I've had an Eagle Spectrum since they first came out and I NEVER dig junk with it, even on a wide open disciminate. The trick is set your display "DECAY" to above half of max, then when you hit a target, pinpoint it to get the EXACT spot, now return to DISC mode and sweep rapidly without the sides of the coil coming over the target, whilst moving 360 degrees aroud the target, now look at the SIGNAGRAPH. More positive bars than negative? DIG. More negative bars than positive, walk on. For a second confirmation, flick the switch forwards into all metal, and lift the search head until the signal is faint, now without dropping the head down, sweep over it a few times in all discriminate. "Wide" signals are junk, narrow ones are 90%+ probably a good target.

Detectors have gotten alot better. The only "modern" digital ones I have are the makro racer 2, nokta fors relic, and now the legend. Even the relic and racer are pretty fast. The legend is nuts. Closest ive seen to my analog detectors But I will say, I never had to go slow with all my tesoros lol. One of the benefits of analog. The new machines are just now getting the recovery speed that even my compadre has had for decades.

Your right. You must match your swing with the speed your older detector requires. With adjustable recovery speed you can swing at faster speeds depending on how you set up the detector.

I find the best speed for the MAnticore is 4 then adjust your actual swing speed to where you can't hear each targets tone. So when it's trashy go slower when it's pretty clean you can swing faster
