Unveiling Rock Island Locomotive 4506
Recorded on 7/7/18
A-Train4014 Productions returns to the Illinois Railway Museum on Saturday, July 7 for the unveiling of Rock Island GP7R 4506 diesel locomotive with Andrew Mangalindan and Aaron Gonzales representing us and special guest: Ben Nicholas (TwigyBNSF).
History of Rock Island Locomotive 4506:
This locomotive was built in 1952 and it was originally Rock Island GP7 1266 in red, black, and white colors. It operated freight service on the Rock Island Railroad for over twenty years until the Rock Island Railroad filed for bankruptcy in 1975. Precision National, a rebuilding company, made an agreement with the Rock Island Railroad to rebuild the GP7 locomotives into GP7R locomotives. When the Rock Island completely shut down its railroad, the Rock Island sent GP7R 4506 back to Precision National and eventually it was sold to the Chicago & North Western Railroad which became C&NW 4160. It was operated for the Chicago & North Western Railroad and Union Pacific into the late 1900’s. The Illinois Railway Museum acquired the locomotive in 2007 and it was in C&NW colors. It wasn’t operational and only served to be stripped for parts. In 2008, the museum volunteers were able to get the locomotive operating again and the decision was made to preserve the locomotive and repaint it into Rock Island colors again.
In June of this year, the locomotive received a new coat of paint in June this year in its 1975 vintage colors from the Rock Island. It was put on display at the East Union Depot for photo opportunities and hauled a short passenger train later in the day. We were all over the museum property including Seeman Road capturing photos and videos of Rock Island GP7R 4506 running on its first day of operations and it was a successful first day for the locomotive. In addition, keep watching towards the end as we even got to put our cameras inside the locomotive and take a cab ride on the locomotive. Overall, it was a successful day at the Illinois Railway Museum getting videos and photos of 4506 running on its first day on the museum property. Special shoutout to the IRM Diesel Crew for working really hard on the locomotive and for giving our crew an opportunity to give us a cab ride as well.

Lots of people made fun of Bankruptcy Blue but it was one of the most iconic sights of my childhood in Tinley Park; as a kid I thought the locomotives were quite pretty and always a treat to see! This one's practically a work of art. Some folks really worked hard to bring this little road switcher to life. I'd have killed to have been on that train!

Look up Rock Island Railroad 2020 in the search and you will see that a man bought the CRI&P name, started a new company, and the engines are painted in the blue REBORN blue as they like to call it. There are 2 gp38s painted like this that look brand new plus several more that are being painted. They have the Rock 5 chime horns and sound great. The railroad seems to be really doing well and is expanding. They are up to around 118 miles of track, not bad for a brand new company. He is looking for anything Rock Island to use on the railroad. If 4506 wants to go to work again for The Rock it probably could. But check them out if you want to see the new CRI&P railroad and see what working gp38s in the blue Rock color scheme look like in 2020.

Ain't that the truth! Coincidentally this type of horn is the one used in the Hotwheels freight yard train set commercials back in 1983! When tuned properly these horns can raise the dead back to life....

I grew with the RTA/C&NW/Rock Island Commuter Service era !!! The CRI&P was shut down when I was lil youngster but seein this brings tears to my eyes of what could have been if the right people were put in charge !!! Now all we have are pictures & memories but this is priceless, from all CRI&P fans, foamers, ex-employees alike we say thank you for this 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽 !!!!

Maybe the right person is in charge now. Rock Island is back in operation in Mississippi. UP never purchased the name and a long time RR guy refounded it in 2018. They recently got a CN dash 8 waiting to go into paint. They renamed the bankruptcy blue to reborn blue and arlready have units painted and pulling

Beautiful . Brings me back to my childhood days of watching Rock Island trains passing near my home in Tinley Park. Even in the early 1970s, when TP was nothing more than a farm community, there were a ton of trains past the Oak Park Avenue station.

Had family in Marseilles so while not an everyday occurrence I got plenty of the Rock growing up. Missed out on the Rocket Freight era but caught the majority of the maroon and yellow, the red/yellow speed letter era and the Bankruptcy Blue era. My biggest regret is only bringing a camera along once ( sadly the pics including the switcher and outside braced wood hack stationed in Marseilles have been lost to the ages) because in that foolishness of youth that makes you think the world won't change that much I "knew" that I drink in the sights sounds of the RI and not record it because it'd be there forever. Also regret not making use of my newly minted drivers license in those last years to explore the commuter end of the RI as it truly was a working museum right up to the RTA takeover

She's a beauty. Remember seeing the first couple of vids of her idling away roughly around the time she arrived. At least according to the member of IRM that posted the vid she was indeed intended as a parts loco but after a few of the diesel shop guys looked her over it was kind of a let's try a few minor things, hit the starter and see what happens thing.

with such operable locomotives from the Rock Island like 4506 it makes me wonder... With the Rock Island Rail being the revival of the old, could they end up running RI engines from museums over their trackage, on a side note I'm a fan of the 'Bankruptcy Blue' scheme, very eye catching and memorable

Obviously, the new Rock Island makes money by hauling various commodities, resources, etc. With only 85 miles of track, how and from who do they obtain what they are hauling? Directly from customers at key shipping points? I heard they are part of the "North American Railway Network" and that they are partnering with the Canadian National. Do they get traffic from the CN and do they supply traffic to the CN?

CN has operation privilages on some UP lines. They pull to a CN swap, they service their local farms and industry ATM and if i were a betting man I would guess they will be doing line haul with CN by 2025
