They are an inexpensive way to improve the look of your videos and photos. FYI...I use CTO gels on my lights for the video blogs I shoot and almost always Diffusion gels as well.

Thanks for watching. The nice thing about gels is that they can improve your video work, regardless of how you shoot. They can reduce the intensity of light if you use an open window to light yourself when working on your blog or they can be used to reduce the blue lighting reflecting off of you when using a web cam to record and give your skin tones a more natural look.

I often use an ND filter when filming outside...but hadn't considered lighting gels inside or outside..what lighting get would you recommend starting with or is it better to just use colored lights instead?
@jimcostafilms
@jimcostafilms 4 жыл бұрын
Using ND filters outside is exactly the right thing to do as they bring down the intensity of the sun. The answer to your question really depends on what and where you are shooting, as well as what you're trying to accomplish. I have another video on on gels coming out next Wednesday that might help. I need more information to properly answer your question. However, there are five types of gels. Effects gels filter the color of a light source to create an effect. Diffusion changes the qualities of a light, color correction gels filter wavelengths of light and color conversion gels change the color temperature of a light source. As mentioned, neutral density gels are used to reduce the intensity of a light source. My suggestions would be to use normal white lighting as it's the most versatile and then gel the lights as needed. Using colored lights locks you into whatever color the lights are with no room to vary or manipulate the light source as needs/conditions change.

a piece of advice, ditch the music in the background, its extremely distracting and annoying when you are trying to explain something in general, good info tho in the video!

Actually, I have. This is an older video and I've since changed to having background music over just the opening and closing, but not throughout. You're not the first person to bring that up and I listened to my fans and made the change.
