@@andrewpreston4127 How about that! I too left GU in 1973 and did post-graduate study in New York. However I later spent my working life in London--where I too drove buses/coaches part-time. My great regret is never getting a chance to try out a Glasgow Daimler with the pre-selector gearbox. At least you have achieved that. The University is another world now and we get to see it thanks to kind students such as Liz who make videos. I wonder what they would say if they knew we used to have separate unions for men and women. I loved the men's union which was just like a gentleman's club. I suppose the Queen Margaret Union was equally popular with the girls, but of course I never got to see it. "Hello, Hello, how do you do? We are the girls of QMU!"

Great video! Thank you for sharing and being a vulnerable American. (Were from Oregon). We were just there on vacation about a month ago. Couldn’t agree with your sentiment more about Glasgow being a place to live. We spent most of our time in Edinburgh and it was definitely a great place to visit. Glasgow enthralled us in a very short time. It snowed when we were there during that wicked cold stretch in Mid-December 2022. I hope you make more videos. Learned A LOT from you in 10 minutes. You do NOT need a timetable on the Glasgow underground. You just turn up and wait 10 mins max. The city does have a nother subway called the 'low level ' which is an East West line through the city centre.
@ReaghanReilly
@ReaghanReilly 11 ай бұрын
Glasgow’s rail network is so much bigger than that 😂 15 main lines take trains to the north, south, east and west of the city, and to places further afield such as the west coast seaside towns of Gourock and Weymss Bay, where you can catch ferries to some of our islands. Trains to posh suburbs north of Glasgow and to southern towns in Ayrshire and Lanarkshire leave from ‘low level’ Central and Queen Street. Anyone interested, google ‘Glasgow train network map’

The longest I spent away from Glasgow was when I lived in NYC and hadn't returned for about 4 years. I went in January and the damp weather was mad. All my mates were laughing at me. It was about 10 degrees more than wher i@d arrived from but I could not for the life of me warm up. It took me days of scarves, coats etc. mates laughing etc. to sort it. It's a horribble damp cold , I think it's a British thing. 've never been in another country where it can take you so long to get "warmed up". Still a great place to be honest.

If you can't have double glazed windows, you should look into secondary glazing instead. Secondary glazing is not the same thing as double glazing. It's very cheap and doesn't require planning permission and you can install it yourself. You order a custom piece of clear acrylic panelling cut to the right size, and use magnetic strips to stick it to the inside of the existing window area in winter. In summer when it's warmer and you don't need it, you can just remove it because it pops off easily due to only being attached with a magnetic seal.

Get off the subway at Partick and catch a westbound train one stop to Exhibition Centre… which used to be called Finnieston 😃 Or catch an eastbound train one stop to Charing Cross, which is the closest train station to the Mitchell Library. Note: a train station is not a subway station. Think New York: you have both, too 😊 Or walk and get wet but stay healthy 😂 Or hire one of our OVO bikes 😃

The most frustrating thing about public transportation in Glasgow is the true subway exists in the city, but does not have a particular name for it, just called ScotRail, that is why all the foreigners DO NOT know about it and use this funny circle called Subway. You can get particularly to any part of Glasgow by the system of suburbian train, for example to Finnieston you can get from Partick station or Hyndland. The station is called Exhibition centre. One of the lines from Partick leads to Motherwell to the east, the other one - up to Edinburgh! So if you live along the line, you can take the ticket to Edinburgh right from your station. What is also convenient about it, if you take a long distance ticket with ScotRail, for example, you live at Partick and you go to Ayr, the ticket price will cost the same as from Glasgow Central! They will give you two tickets for the price of one - Partick-Glasgow Central and Glasgow Central-Ayr. Also there is an annual unlimited ticket for ScotRail + Subway, so you can just make a transfer at any of the transit stations like Partick, Buchanan Street-Queen station and st Enoch-Glasgow Central lines 16-17. So it is really important if you come to Glasgow to live
@ReaghanReilly
@ReaghanReilly 11 ай бұрын
It’s called ‘the train’. People say: ‘I’m getting the train to Motherwell from Glasgow Central low level.’ Or you might catch ‘the train’ to Airdrie from Glasgow Queen Street low level. At these two main stations, trains leave from the upper level or ‘low level’ but it’s not a total underground system, it’s only underground in the city. As soon as they get out of the central area, the trains are out in the open. Hope that makes sense. And yes, hop off the subway at Partick and catch a train one stop to Exhibition Centre and you’re now IN FINNIESTON 😊 The station was called Finnieston before the exhibition centre was built 😊
@alekbeloff
@alekbeloff 11 ай бұрын
@@ReaghanReilly exactly, just because the whole train system appeared in Glasgow before those hipster words subway or metro. You cannot call it a city train either, because Glasgow is not quite just Glasgow City but also East Ren, East Dun, Lanarkshire and all the rest. Just most countries associate train system with intercity only, but here in Scotland that's a vast subway that unites the whole lowlands into a single conurbation. BTW most of the worlds subway systems are not fully underground, as an example New York subway system turns into an overground in Brooklyn, Boston green lines are just trams outside the city centre, Moscow metro is an overground closer to the Moscow State Uni, Some Istanbul metro lines are overgrounds outside the central part, like the one that goes through the bus station and ikea

Re: "..... Glasgow will never leave you.... ". You're right. After uni in Glasgow 50 years ago, I took a job on Glasgow buses for 18 months. I needed to pay rent, was just tired of academia, and needed some time to decide how best to use my education. After 18 months of driving through Glasgow Cross 10 minutes after pub closing time on Friday and Saturday nights, the bus filling to more than capacity with, nearly all, men absolutely plastered, and who had no money left to pay fares........ I just wanted to get as far as away as possible from Glasgow. So I did. I still remember how my life improved so much after I left Glasgow, so in that sense Glasgow has never left me.

@@maryyeoman2629 It's not that great. Nicer cities also have great universities. Just seems an odd choice to pick one of the UK's ugliest cities to spend 3/4 years in.

@@lorrainereid9787 It is an ugly city. Some small pockets do not make it a nice city. It is ugly. Maryhill, Castlemilk, Southside, ugly tenements and residential blocks, awful weather. Yes yes, there's a few nice bits, but doesn't make up for the shit. By the way, I've lived there

Having studied at the University of Glasgow I can reliably report that it is absolutely rotten to the core. Lectures are routinely cancelled at the last minute without warning or apology. The workload is completely unsustainable. The university is very anti-English. The city of Glasgow is unsafe, particularly for women, being very crime-ridden, particulary with violent crime, and awash with drugs and alcoholism. If you want to study in Scotland, Glasgow is best avoided like the plague. Edinburgh etc is a much better and safer choice.

And what she fails to mention is the huge drugs problem in Glasgow - a legacy of the SNP - and it voted YES in the 2014 referendum.
