0:25 Introduction by Alissa North
6:12 Kathryn Gustafson presentation
1:12:03 Q & A
On March 4, 2014, the John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design welcomed landscape architect Kathryn Gustafson to present the 2014 Michael Hough / Ontario Association of Landscape Architects Visiting Critic lecture.
In this lecture, Kathryn explored landscape architecture in two parts: composition in landscape architecture and landscape & urban density.
As Founding Principal of the award winning firm Gustafson Guthrie Nichol, Kathryn has over 30 years of distinguished practice in landscape architecture. Her early work includes a widely known series of projects in France, and recently acclaimed projects are located throughout Europe, North America, Africa, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East. These civic projects range in scale from a tenth of an acre to 750 acres.
Kathryn’s diverse portfolio is recognized for intuitively incorporating those fundamental sculptural and sensual qualities that enhance the human experience of landscape. As a partner in two offices, Gustafson Guthrie Nichol in Seattle and Gustafson Porter in London, she continues to evolve her design approach into new contexts of time, culture, and nature.

I AM a Gardener/Garden Designer with an ecological focus and am very glad to have listened to Kathryn's talk. I wish she practiced/had an office in Toronto. I would do whatever she needed to be done to learn from her wisdom and be a part of helping to make the human/insect/animal environment a harmonious existence...As it should be.Always. All Ways.

Very moving, inspiring and informative talk! Being a landscape architecture student, I am not so sure of what or how exactly to design a space. I just do it out of what I can offer. Hearing Ms. Gustafson, I have obtained so much ways to create a place instead of a space. She opened new worlds to me. Thank you very much for sharing her mind in this video upload. Hoping to watch more from her!

This was such a brilliant, brilliant talk. I'm not a student of landscape architecture. In fact, urban planning, civil ecology, and any form of architecture rarely ever even crossed my mind. However, even though I only really stumbled upon this video by mistake, it unexpectedly gripped me, and I actually really enjoyed it. Thank you for posting this on KZfaq. This has certainly opened my eyes to many things, and I respect those in the field so much for it, especially Kathryn Gustafson.

Interesting to contemplate the different approach to landscape, there are so many as landscape architects....One layer I wonder to contemplate in the urban landscaping is how to embrace de-faunation and Anthropocene, considering the incidental negative fact that humanity is exercising over the survival of species. Can any urban landscape architect explain me how embrace those concepts beyond picturesque and historical approach?....because the Orangutan are also part of this world. I like this presentation because make me think so much, many things are not even considered in the urban environment: where is the food come from, is it natural, is it transgenic....I am assuming people will eat wherever they put in front of them, no matter if that is conduction to the finish of an ecosystem. Well, apparently, nothing can be done in the urban except keep going with the urban direction machine and approach the damage through restoration (or remediation) but I wonder, is not humanity going lonely?

Christopher Alexander, Architect who coined 'Pattern Language' was acutely aware of human's connections to place in terms of spirit and emotional ties...and created a design language for it ...btw..if you are going to record the question answer.. please better position the mikes ...either one was ok or the other...
