After leaving Medicine Bow, WY service the "Big Boy" is now just 18 hours away from Cheyenne. Along this remote stretch of the Lincoln Highway I pursue this ever elusive UP Steam Locomotive 4014 as he heads into a driving spring snow storm with rain & fog
This was filmed entirely along the "Lincoln Highway" in Wyoming
"The Cowboy State" USA

Next time Big Boy is in the snow like that she'll be "hot" and steam will be escaping from ever joint! Can't you just picture it now :) this video was pure perfection. Thank you for uploading.

You have done a great job Skip Weythman. How you were able to maintain the continuity of the chase,is beyond me! You had a great driver and the videos speak for themselves. I have lost count of the number of times I have viewed anything and everything to do with Big Boy 4014. I'd like to extend my thanks again to the UP officials who gave this project their Blessing and to Ed Dickens and all of his crew and the volunteers in CA as well as everywhere else! Just know, you fantastic people, that there are thousands of us 'out-here', who totally appreciate all of the time and effort being put into this Landmark project! Not to mention the cost to UP! Well Done!

Great video! Keep up the good work! I really look forward to when I hear that 4014 is fully restored and is ready to run nicely throughout the U.S. And what I like in this video is how you can hear how hard those diesels were working to keep 4014 moving.

for all the people saying Big BOY is a her you are all wrong. 4014 is the stallion of the UP steam fleet.

Yes, a hulking, BRAWNIEST stallion of the steam fleet after she's fixed back up. But he'll also be able to literally RUN FAST a lot more often in this modern era than he ever did originally. During their original reign over the Wasatch rails, the Big Boys RARELY got the chance to run over 50 mph even though they were capable of 80 mph. Now however, hopefully we'll be able to see 4014 truly gallop like the brawny stallion he is quite often, being able to run 60-65 mph on a regular basis. 60-65 is what they commonly like to run 3985 at, and so its likely they'll try to run 4014 at about that speed too.

4014 was supposed to be used in a movie called big boy but the project fell though a long time ago, i could be thinking about the wrong loco though. I know one big boy was wrecked so it has a lof of missing parts

I wonder why at times, in these various videos of the big tow from California to Cheyenne, why sometimes they ran with the eccentric rods in place and so the side lubricators being actuated by it, and other times they took the eccentric rods off and the lubricators were therefore not being worked. My main guess is that during long straight runs with no turns they took the rods off to save further wear and tear on the running gear, and put the rods back on so the lubricators would be working during curvy stretches so the articulating joints would get lubed as they worked and wouldn't be damaged.

They seam to have the eccentric rods in place on the LH side but not the RH side. Sadly can't think of a reason why.

bigkiwimike After doing more reading up, you're right. The eccentric rods on LH side were in place and the lubricators on the LH side were working, but NOT the lubricators on the RH side, hence no rods on the RH side. My reading research has told me that the LH lubricators are responsible for keeping oiled up all the running gear parts and articulation joints that would be operating and cycling during the dead-tow. The RH lubricators however, are responsible for oiling those parts that see live steam during running. So there was no need for them to be operating and I guess they just went ultra liberal with the greasing of articulated steam joints during the move or removed altogether for the trip one side of all the articulating steam joints they could remove at Pomona and Colton.

What model is the lead locomotive? 4014 just a coincidence? I mean obviously not the fact that they're using it for this pull, but when it was made the 4000 series was used in diesel production as well? I can't find any info on the diesels they used to transport her.

That was NOT a mistake, UP by design wanted the present day #4014, the diesel one, to be the one to haul the Big Boy sharing its number to the Steam Shop. Also of note is that the rear diesel, in the consist for braking assist more than anything, is engine #4884, a deliberate reference to the Big Boy's 4-8-8-4 wheel arrangement. ^^

***** #4884 had the lead in towing Big Boy from Pomona to Colton after Southern Pacific Heritage unit #1996 pulled Big Boy from the Pomona fairgrounds back onto live track for the first time since 1961. As you can also guess, the 4014 diesel loco is gonna be losing that number as soon as Mr. Dickens and the rest of the Steam Crew can get the Big Boy rebuilt and ready for live steaming once more. :D
