Love the flying Scotsman! The Scotsman is a thing of beauty! From being the first one to hit 100 miles an hour documented! to running 422 miles nonstop! The British people have incredibly beautiful steam locomotives! Your country in general it’s just beautiful! From one Railfan to another, any time that a steam locomotive comes back from heavy overhaul, especially when it has not run in decades it’s a beautiful thing!

Sounds like the UP 4014 has quite a family tree. What impressed me was the size and power of this baby ! I heard it pulled a freight train at least a mile long through the continental divide. One advantage steam locomotives have is they tend to hit their peak horsepower at 40-50 mph. (vs. diesel's that generally hit their peak horsepower at 10-12mph.) Which is to say all things being equal...obviously leaving out how much more labor intensive the steam locomotive will be to operate, etc...a 6000hp steam locomotive like the "Big Boy" can pull the same load as a 6000hp diesel locomotive but around 4x faster when it hits its stride.
@codyparker6792 жыл бұрын
What's also not mentioned is the massive amounts of torque thay a steam engine that large makes over a diesel. Its a very overlooked thing since it needs the torque more then horses
@tprdfh512 жыл бұрын
nucflashevent...diesel locomotive hp is not dependent upon speed - tractive effort is dependent upon speed if the unit has DC traction motors - if the unit has AC traction motors then speed is irrelevant as far as tractive effort is concerned. You are confusing steam boiler hp (a measure of the boilers ability to perform work over time) with TE...which is the ability to put that hp to the railhead and drawbar in order to pull freight. Even a locomotive like Big Boy would be hard pressed to haul tonnage like a single modern AC powered diesel locomotive.

@redstonerelic2 жыл бұрын
@@sithlordofoz the diesel loco is to provide Electricity to the rest of the train. #4014 is infact pulling the train. no smoke does not mean that its not doing the work, smoke is the sign of a wasteful fire and if they are tending to the fire properly there is little to no smoke
@sithlordofoz2 жыл бұрын
@@redstonerelic Generator in one of the cars could do that. It's what they do in other countries where the cars need head end power.

The helper diesels are for: 1. Dynamic braking, the presence of which conserves 4014’s own brakes, substantially reducing operating costs and maintenance. Also, dynamic brakes in a train consist complies with Federal law. 2. In the case of a breakdown on the mainline, helpers will expeditiously move the train so that revenue service can resume. 3. Helpers can extend 4014’s operating range if water and/or fuel is unavailable. I spoke to engineer Ed Dickens before the October 2019 excursion from West Colton to Barstow, and this information is straight from him. Additionally, the helpers were not going to be pushing Big Boy up Cajon Pass.

@@Kitchevo The probable reason for the extra whistling, there is a grade( level) xing that 4014 was approaching, with a lot of people filming and enjoying the spectacle of a steam run the engineer( driver) was taking no chances with anyone or thing getting too close to the track. Union Pacific always takes great care on it's steam runs and asks everyone to stay at least 25ft away from their tracks.
