It was a big weekend both for the sport and for Honda as this weekend Honda made their debut in the Electric dirt bike sector with Trey Canard testing out the Honda CR Electric bike in the Japanese Nationals.
It was an up and down weekend for sure as they got some track time under their belts, Canard raced three moto’s and took two holeshots, he finished 2nd in the first race and unfortunately crashed in the other two causing poor results, we’ll look at that crash in a second. Honda assured us that Canard gathered important data and improved the bike in each session.
Here’s some footage of Trey Canard ripping the new bike this weekend.

To all the doubters and riders who think an electric DB is no fun. Go test ride a Stark and see what you think after. Even Cannard said it made him smile, something that gas bikes he had tested didn’t do. That says A LOT! I totally agree that EDB won’t replace IC bikes. That said, the haters should try one before bashing them. My buddies and I test rode a Stark a few days ago (single track). We all loved it(even though the MX suspension is not great for single track). We had 3 Altas along for the ride as well..We had a blast. For some reason that no one can put their finger on, EDB are just incredibly fun to ride. I can’t explain why but you find yourself grinning and enjoying yourself so much. EDB turn better than anything out there, the sound they make is much more fun in person than on video(IMO). The power customizations on the Stark are so cool.The shift on the fly maps are awesome .The Stark is 5 bikes in one. The power delivery is incredible…we rode mostly at 35-45 hp range. Even 35hp feels like so much more than the number. One thing to keep in mind about HP on EDB: the power is instantaneous, so although 35 hp doesn’t sound like much, it really is because you have ALL 35 hp at all times whereas a gas bike makes peak HP way up high and takes time to build. Anyways, EDB will never replace gas bikes but for me, EBD for trail riding are more fun to ride for some reason, not sure why . If anybody is wondering about range : we rode a little over 2 hrs. The Altas had 0 battery left and the Stark had 28% remaining.

"For some reason that no one can put their finger on, EDB are just incredibly fun to ride" Let me give it a shot...since electric bikes have full torque from 0 rpm, the acceleration feels linear & constant compared to (limited) powerbands on ICE bikes. If you have spent your riding career "waiting" for the motor to get into the powerband, like a 500 compared to a 125, the bottom-end power feels massive.

25 years ago people laughed at 4 strokes. Five years later those same people complained they were unfair and ruining the sport. I think we will see a 450 championship won in the US or mxgp with an electric bike in the next ten years

It's inevitable as technology progresses despite all the resistance racing is about going fast. If someone came out with a bike that ran on baloney and hot dogs and sounded like a Canadian goose with a butt trumpet people would ride it if it was the fastest way around the track. When electric bikes are the fastest people will ride them because people want to go faster. They could add speakers to them if they want some noise it's already happening with the BMW hyper hybrid i8. There will always be resistance. People were very resistant to "automobiles" and combustion engines 100+ years ago. There was nothing wrong with the horse and buggy, it had been used for centuries. If motocross still exists in 2100 I'm sure it will look different than it does today and if it exists in 2200 I'm sure it will look different again. Whatever it is people are doing or racing in the future will always be related to modern technology at the time and some will always prefer vintage or nostalgic old stuff. It's human nature to push forward and progress and to resist change at the same time.

I like Trey's take on it. The e bike is a separate animal. The market will decide what happens and i think its awesome there's enough demand to cause a major manufacturer to think about the addition to the awesome machines we already have.i think it'll be a separate class and if the viewership is there on the competitive scene then so be it. Hopefully its after im dead though lol

I was there, if you look at the crash in the background there is a fella wearing a blue Jacket i was there. I saw the crash, out of the corner and BEFORE the jump they tangled. Trey went down and the bike LOCKED solid, they couldnt even push it this was the last race in the day. Honda often test bikes there, I saw the pre production 4 stroke being tested about 2000/2001 ish It was a stock standard cr with a four stroke motor in it ,,,

I think it was just a racing accident.As far as E-bikes,I rode The Harley Live Wire.It was faster than I expected.Couldn't tell really how fast because I was riding it in a Demo group ride but it was surprisingly fast from 0-60.I don't like the limited riding range though.I've always rode and raced 2 stroke Motocross Bikes and they Will Always be my favorite bike to ride.At least the E-Bikes do come with very good suspension.The Honda that Trey Connard raced in Japan didn't seem to have any battery life problems in the Motos He raced in.I never liked the 4 strokes racing against the 2 Strokes with the 2 Strokes having such a big cc disadvantage.If they want to let E- Bikes race against anything else there's got to be a way to make it even.

I ride the thing with zero anxiety because I know it’s never going to piss anyone off except keyboard warriors online 🤣 I was ripping the thing in town behind a dike during the middle of the day and nobody even knew (no dust). There is certainly a place for e-motos in the market. Anyone with a few acres and a hose will be able to enjoy their own land again.

We Need - Identical Placement of Hand / Foot Controls on these New Bikes. AND, Yep, this means I want a Mother Friggin Hinson Clutch to modulate power any time I want.. Balancing Power Output with Clutches IS A Right of Passage in ALL Forms of Vehicle Racing on this Planet. Why Phucking Change Now?? Clutches not only offer modulation of power. Clutches instantly Over-Ride All Power during an emergency, like a Stuck throttle. Balancing power output with a Clutch is Where It's At and everyone knows this. It doesn't Matter what the Power Source is, a Clutch Rules... We were All Brought Up Learning to Fan Clutches and Feed power.... Just because some Corporation has the power to change things doesn't mean It's What We Riders Want.... Listen to NICK WAY commenting on Elec Dirt Bikes.....Cheers to Clutch Cargo wherever he is !!

what will eventually happen...they will have separate races: electric and gas. if the track times are significantly faster on the electric bikes kids will start to buy electric bikes in order to blow their friends away, bragging rights and all that kid stuff. gas powered everything will never go away. never. there is so much oil and natural gas in the ground that there will always be a market for it. all the plastic, and so much other stuff, we use depends on oil. nice video!

If Honda has taken their electric bike this far, you can be certain that the electric bike wave is coming. Doesn't mean I like it or that I support it. The reason we have 4 strokes now is simply because they were faster than the 2 strokes. Of course, it wasn't fair to allow a 250 4 stroke to race against 125 2 strokes but it happened anyway. That's going to happen again with e-bikes. But this time it's not just a different engine, it's a different fuel. 2 strokes were able to hang around because they run on gas just like 4 strokes. Even Trey said that you can't compare e-bikes to gas bikes. I don't like it and I hope I'm wrong but companies like Honda don't throw away money on fairy tale ideas.
@marmaleg5309

I might eat my words but I really don't think they'll race them together like 2 and 4 strokes did. They just seem like a totally separate animal. Will probably be a separate class IMO
@danarrington2224
@danarrington2224 8 ай бұрын
@@marmaleg5309 100% agree. They won't be raced together and that's why e-bikes are so bad for the sport. The transition from 2 to 4 strokes was somewhat gradual because they COULD BE raced together. This time around you will have to make a choice because not many people can afford to buy one of each. So, the purchase of an e-bike will largely mean one less gas bike purchase.

@@danarrington2224 I think you have a point. In my case, a used 2 stroke or 4 stroke is all I'll be able to afford. Don't get me wrong I'd love to buy a new one but it can't cost more than my truck.
