I don't mean to be offensive here, but why should it be "admired" when he cared little about his wife dying but cared about when the dog was being shouted at? I mean yeah the latter is certainly bad but why is it considered worse? As obvious I'm not a dog person(yet). Why is there a disparity between compassion for humans and pets. I certainly get that some people find better companionship with their pets than other people, but why is it considered a good thing. Like the OP said, it's sort of "admired".
