I saw these two locomotives in 1981 and seeing them in this video makes me weep. They are so beautiful, just absolute poetry in motion.

Very enjoyable sight seeing the two main Union Pacific rr steam star attraction locomotives (at the time) in operation with one another, the 8444 and 3985 both looked fantastic during their railfair journey.

This was one of the first train videos I ever owned (and I've accumulated quite a library). This was actually my first exposure to engine 8444, as I was already familiar with Challenger 3985. So it holds a special place in my heart. Two things that I did when I watched this were: one, I kept mispronouncing Cheyenne as "Shy-anna", and two: I thought 8444 was a Challenger, too; didn't think to check the wheels back then.

The 844 gained the extra 4 back in the 60's when the 800 series GP30's came into the picture, and it was still in it's black livery at that time. The Greyhound scheme was a mid to late 80's thing that was then reversed at some point in the 90's.

So why was the number changed from 8444 to just 844?
@ottomatic64325 жыл бұрын
844 was the locomotive's original number. But in 1962, the union pacific ordered a batch of diesels called gp30's and were numbered the in the 800 class. One of them was numbered 844, so to avoid complications the U.P. renumbered the steam engine from 844 to 8444 and it stuck with this number until 1989 when the gp30's were retired including gp30 844. Now that there wasn't another engine that was numbered 844 it allowed the locomotive to have it's number back. It's kept its number 844 since then.

Ummm, 8444? I thought it was 844. WTF?
@JerichoRaccoon94110 жыл бұрын
844 wore the number 8444 from 1962-1989, since the UP had a diesel numbered 844, and it avoided confusion, until the diesel was retired.
