Hi friends! I'm back with another public art vlog. And this time it's my biggest mural to date. We get off to a rocky start with falling winter temperatures and getting the projector set up. We end out installing a large tarp to protect the mural from multiple storms that came through. This is the first part and I will have a second video coming soon where I show the completion so I hope you stay tuned for that soon :) For now, enjoy seeing the up's and down's of painting this wall. I love how much you've brightened up such an otherwise overlooked little building. I also thought it was perfect when you paused to get the kids' POV from one of the swings, that was so sweet. Your colors, and designs, are so whimsical and well-suited for helping to revitalize that little park! *A putty knife and wire grill brush would be useful to add to your pre-paint-prep arsenal to help remove the big bits of peeling paint.

I thought it was recommended not to use latex paint before 35° degrees. It's nice to learn something new from the video. That we can use latex in any weather.

Wow !! Huge job and the struggles were real, tarp was a genius idea. Bet you had to do some fast talking to the cops at 1am lol. Can’t wait to see it finished.

Thank you for watching! I’m sort of amazed I thought of the tarp honestly lol With the cops, I was shocked because I had told the township I would be working at night due to the projector but I guess the memo never made it to the police. I didn’t show this, but the cops showed up TWICE!! Once because of the “graffiti” alert and once because Chris’ car alarm went off and they thought someone was trying to steal the car lolllll

@@FionaCArt not sure you have them but here in Australia painters have these blow heater things to dry paint on walls, might have helped an go investment for your business.. At least you know the cops turn up if you in trouble lol here they can take hours. Good stories to look back on

@knotsme2294 That’s really cool - is that even needed in a climate like Australia?! Lol 😂 There’s a lot of tools that could help me, but ultimately it comes off the top of my budget so I try my best to keep overhead low and buy things slowly (like my scaffold was my most recent investment). Next will be a sprayer for priming walls so I don’t have to destroy my hands rolling. 😆

@@FionaCArt yeah understandable one thing at a time.. haha yes it gets cold here, we have snow no where near like you do but it does happen. I live in a place where they say we have 9 months of winter. So yeah painters use these large heat blowers things to dry paint in houses etc. anyways great work look forward to the next one

Paint and cold weather is such a pain! I know from painting the outside of my house, lol. I am applying to be an artist in my city for a public service project that they are having and they want artist to paint storm drain covers, never painted public art before but I figure this is a great way to start (they are small). Love all your tips you share! I wanted to ask if you have heard of or are you a member of the Womens Caucaus for Art? Its a group of all women in the arts and there is a national level and they host stuff like 2nd saturday which addresses different topics and there is a book club and then there are chapters in states and anyway, I did not know if you might be interested (I am a member and that is it, I don't get a commission or anything) just sharing because I thought you might be interested. It is a great way to meet other women artists and the information available is great. Thanks for another great video, can't wait to see the final product!

What's so difficult about tracing? Where is the sacrifice in that? Granted, I do not paint murals, but my grandmother did. She never traced anything. She just got her paint and her ladder and went to work. Also, why in the hell are they having you paint in the rain and below 35°?

This was my first and only time I’ve ever traced a mural, but with that said I think you should use whatever is at your disposal to get the job done. 🤷‍♀️ Shout out to your grandma tho! In regards to the weather, if you watched the video I explained why. But TLDR: I had been booked on other projects and this was my earliest availability unfortunately. We made it work and got the job done to the clients liking, which at the end of the day is what matters to me.

@@FionaCArt I think tracing was especially good choice for this mural where it was large surface area, super tight time line and it included text. I think you made VERY smart choices!
